Still the cinematography is admirable and the pluses far outweigh the negatives. btw I'll be very interested to see a trailer for the forthcoming Ryan Gosling Wolf Man, interesting that Universal would remake it again.
On the back of this I watched Cursed (2005) last night. A werewolf movie by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson (Scream) and... Rick Baker on special effects! Exact same problem. Why hire this guy and use awful cgi.

The movie itself I figured wasn't gonna be great but one of the only Wes' movies I never saw. It seems to recreate Scream quite a bit with an early slaying of one of its star power actors and a few other things I won't spoil.

I wasn't bored but I doubt I'll ever watch it again. A curiosity if you're a fan of Wes Craven (who isn't).

I've seen Cursed two or three times on dvd over the years. Whilst it's alright i certainly wouldn't upgrade it to Blu-ray.

Shallow Grave. 1994

Three flatmates discover their new flat mate is dead and find a suitcase full of money, they hatch a plan to dispose of the body and keep the money, only for other problems to arise.

Made on a low budget by Danny Boyle with Ewan McGregor in his first leading film role as journalist Alex with Christopher Eccleston as accountant David and Kerry Fox as nurse Juliette, who decide to come up with a dead body to disappear.

Right at the start we see how this trio are interviewing for new room mates and how suited they are for being unlikable with their questions and antics until Hugo played by Keith Allen comes along and accept him as a room mate. What makes it strange is how Alex who seems a bit whimpish comes up with a plan and David who becomes a voyeuristic maniac yet Juliette seems to want the money for herself. and goes off the rails a bit. Something of a dark comedy thriller that was enjoyable to watch every now and again.

Weirdly, my understanding is that despite being credited to Rick Baker, the practical werewolf effects in Cursed were actually done by KNB. Baker left the project (he may have even been sacked by the Weinsteins) after Miramax decided that they were unhappy with the film's direction after two thirds of it had already been shot. It was also the Weinsteins that later decided that they wanted cgi work appearing in the film. I haven't seen it for a long time but I recall that the rewritten and reshot version is quite underwhelming. I'm sure that the originally planned version of Cursed would have been much better!

Thinking about CGI ruining effects work, maybe it's a modern thing or was at the time when studio executives insisted on it, for instance The Thing prequel where the original prosthetic work was replaced and totally screwed the pooch.

I'm sure Craven and the special effects guys would be aware that real time transformations are much more effective.

Just compare the original American werewolf to the shitshow Paris sequel.

I haven’t seen it so this post is a bit redundant, but I was going to go and see The Batman this afternoon until I noticed that it’s 3hrs long, when did Hollywood forget how to make a 90 minute movie I miss those days lol.

90 mins plus an ice cream break in the middle haha. Now it’s people getting up and coming back constantly for the last hour.

I actually quite like long films these days, I’ve started watching Harry Potter films because in all honestly I’ve never seen any past 3rd one, lots of great films that aren’t shy of 2 and half hrs plus.

I’ve got nothing against a long film but they make for a poor cinema experience.

Totally agree. There's no need for a Batman film to be three hours long. Two hours is plenty.

I've finished the Potter films after getting them on Blu. Some of them are way too long and meandering. Goblet of Fire and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 are excellent.
