Hugely enjoyable Gothic horror set in the late 1800's. Skillfully directed, written and filmed with some great performances by a cast of familiar faces.

It's all about the mood and atmosphere with spooky houses, fog bound woods, creepy scarecrows, oh and some very gruesome gore. It's refreshingly lacking in modern horror tropes and is more in line with 30's/40's Universal or Hammer horror especially in what it does with a classic monster.

Without giving too much away if you enjoyed films such as Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow or the Hughes bros From Hell then this might be up your street. It's so much up mine i'm looking at house prices.

It was originally titled and released at Sundance as Eight for Silver (It's correct British title) but was renamed as the less interesting The Cursed for it's US cinema release.
Think I'll take a shot at this now you've said all the above. I was initially interested, then put off by a load of quite 'meh' reviews. I'm easily swayed, even though I act all hard. At the end of the day though I'm more interested in atmosphere than anything else, so I'll gladly give it a chance.

It's available on streaming i expect somewhere but there's also a Blu-ray. I saw the new dvd at Asda for a fiver so opted not to spend thirteen quid on a Blu. The dvd looks very good anyway.

Body of Evidence (1993)

Madonna plays Rebecca Carlson, a woman accused of killing a vulnerable man through wild sexual games when she found out she was in line for $8m from his will. Defence attorney Willem Dafoe vows to get her off (The charges... God you lot have dirty minds) but ends up in a dangerous affair with her. (Oh... maybe you don't).

Nowhere near as bad as the critics would suggest, Body of Evidence was just one of a whole wave of erotic thrillers riding on the coat tails of 1987's Fatal Attraction. However it's clearly gains it's inspiration from early Film Noir and 1981's Body Heat with it's atmospheric use of light and shade and waterfront locations.

Madonna, who was widely derided at the time for the film, (She was for everything she did that had anything to do with sex, be it her Sex book or her 1992 Erotica album) really isn't bad at all, i'd even suggest her performance is quite restrained. In fact the film as a whole is quite restrained. Certainly a couple of the sex scenes are famous or indeed infamous (Hello dripping wax and car bonnet) but they really don't seem in the least subversive in the 2020's. In fact during the trial scenes the courts are repeatedly cleared as 'wild' sex acts are spoken about except they really aren't that wild at all, normal you might say in the here and now.

The cast is quite impressive too. Along with Dafoe and Madonna there's strong support from Joe Mantegna (I'm sorry but i only hear Fat Tony whenever he speaks), Anne Archer, Julianne Moore, Jurgen Prochnow and Frank Langella, who together make the daft plot appear perfectly reasonable.

I've always loved the erotic thriller genre from the eighties and nineties.

Forget the obsession dvd companies have for Hong Kong and Asian cinema. Where's the Secret Games, Mirror Images and Night Eyes box sets?

Forgot to mention that there are some good extras on the new Body of Evidence Blu-ray from Final Cut. It's a well put together package.

Remember it being rather controversial when it came out at the Cinema and on Video Release. Guessing it was one of those sign of it's time kind of things.

Certainly it wouldn't garner much reaction if it would have been released this year. It's definitely a better film than it's given credit for, I think people were too scared to admit that it was actually good.

Have you seen the Kim Newman Documentary, of so how long is it and is it any good?

Yes, it's the usual 22 minutes in length. I enjoyed it.

Shannon's an absolute star of the erotic thriller genre. Soft core royalty along with that other Shannon, Shannon Tweed.

2 out of the 3 are good, that interview with Madonna's biographer was a little bit annoying, but the one from the producer was really interesting, and Kim was Kim Good package.

I can imagine this being film being shown in a dark room in an art gallery. I’d walk into the room, watch for a couple of minutes, scratch my head and leave.

I’d read that Skinamarink was ‘experimental’, and I wish I could come up with another word to describe it, but I think ‘experimental’ is probably the only fit word. It basically feels like I’ve been watching static on tv for 100 minutes - you know that way when you stare at it for long enough you start to see things?

I think the word you are looking for is shit instead of experimental!

Amazing Spiderman 1&2

Well these were both a lot better than I remember , Garfield was good in the role and was nice they went with Gwen Stacy instead of Mary Jane was nice to see one of my favourite spidey villains the lizard. It's just a shame we didn't get anymore movies because of Disney buying marvel , the third could of been interesting with the introducing of the sinister six. Will be interesting to see if the rumors turn out too be true and Garfield gets another crack at the whip or web in this case.

Now watching
