Cannon Fodder...
Watched an HD print of American Ninja this morning. It's always one which stared out of the revolving video racks during the 80s/90s, but had eluded me. It's competently shot, but rather flat, possessing all the cinematic beauty of an episode of The A Team. The SKY HD print looks lovely with amazingly strong colours and probably a world away from the VHS alternative which tried to tempt me decades ago. As for the movie? Pretty heavy going for the first hour, only coming to life during the finale. Once the big flashback goes ahead and Mssrs Dudikoff & Fujioka start kicking arse together, it's a whole lot of fun. Any film which gives decent screen-time to the charismatic Steve James is a recommendation in itself. It's a damn shame that he did so young with the many ideas he had going with him. We get John Fujioka once again playing a Japanese soldier unaware that the war finished, which he essayed to perfection in the classic Spencer/Hill movie Who Finds a Friend Finds a Treasure. He earned the title of "Rental Oriental" long before Clyde Kusatsu stole it out from under him. Every now and again you see a movie which is utterly "straight" until something comes along and fries your mind with illogic, and American Ninja has two these moments. Fujioka takes the Ninja element of invisibility far too literally when he magically disappears into thin air!! I had to rewind it to make sure that I didn't hallucinate the whole thing!! The other instance is when the Black Ninja (Boo!! Hiss!!!) is fighting our hero and from his wrist shoots a laser beam, reducing a flowerpot to broken pottery!! There was no build-up to this weapon, with only traditional Ninja tools being utilised, and it seems that it either had one good shot in it or can solely be used to destroy items of garden furniture. It literally had me screeching "WHAAAATTT???" when I watched it. American Ninja. Catch it if you can. N WILSON (BRO) |

Yeah a very fun offering from Amicus. Love how the scenes in the train carriage link each of the stories together. Good to see Donald Sutherland in the mix too. Interesting those portmanteau horrors from Amicus, but not equal to the quality of Hammer though IMO.

Decided to clear some space off my Sky+ box, so I watched a couple of films I'd recorded off Film 4: Crimson Rivers - Great to see Jean Reno & Vincent Cassel together. Big fan of Cassel. Timecrimes - Decent little time travel movie which I've seen mentioned on various threads here, really enjoyed it. Quite in keeping with my previous days viewing which was..... Triangle, which I bought on BD at the weekend. Yeah, Melissa George.

My recent viewings are: Wes Craven's SHOCKER, I still find it a tad laughable but enjoyable nonetheless! Trading Places, genius... pure genius! Oh and Jamie Lee's boobs.... mmmm! SCREAM 1 and 2, re-visiting these in preparation for the fourth, popping number three on now! I loved them when they came out but they seem a little boring now? Weird. |

Agreed. thought Triangle was brilliant, wouldn't call it a horror films though, it does play out in a very similar way to Time Crimes which i also found to be a brilliant film. |

I finished watching the Dirty Harry Collection which is a fantastic box set and, though the latter couple of films aren't up there with the first two, it is a great selection of action-thriller movies. This evening, I also watched The Evil and Twice Dead as a double bill with trailers before and in between the films. They're both reasonably good, but I preferred the second of the two.

Just saw a random movie tonight, the UK "chav" flick Zebra Crossing. Its a new movie released recently on DVD but its in black and white for some reason. I dont know why the director done that as I see no reason for that type of movie to be in B&W. its about this kid that is part of a gang and as the movie progresses you see shots of him going to church and not telling the others. Slowly he wants to quit the gang activity and there is tension between members. Its a depressing film esp the ending. Was not the best script or acting or story for that matter but it was a alright watch when you got nothing better to do. |
