'Conquest' is such an odd little film and doesn't at all feel part of the genre it's supposed to be ripping off. It's more like a slow, weird dream. Has to be one of my fave Fulcis.

Is the life and death of a porno gang worse than a Serbian film? I don't see how it could get anymore sick and twisted than a Serbian film.

ANABOLYZER - From the desert of late nineties, a period during which Italian horror probably no longer had much of a self concept. Well, you won't be in for any golden-era high style if you pick this ugly duckling, but what you will recieve is buckets of soft sleaze, TV style flatness, some occasionally vicious gore and a gymnasium setting... maybe my core value system needs some serious evolution, but all of the above spells winning form to me. Let me revisit the gym-based aspect - I hate gyms and all organised health and fitness regimes, so I delight in the sub-sub-genre which visits bad things upon them. 'Aerobicide' and 'Death Spa' may have a twisted eighties aesthetic one-up on this, but I feel 'Anabolyzer' makes a worthy contribution to the intimidatingly exclusive club of lycra work-out horror. The plot has something to do with a new steroid turning people into sex murderers, then gives way to tangled intrigue, plots and gym-based power plays - could've made a good soap. Anyway, the storyline is eroded by the weight of endless naked breasts, random 'snuff footage' and a police investigation that can't get in on the already confused narrative... if you're up for a life changing cultural experience, book yourself in for some pilates instead - if not, come watch a double bill of this and 'Birds of Prey' with me.

The Plague Of The Zombies - 1966 UK d:John Gilling

A hoot to see this on the big screen all tarted up. I would have preferred the colour to be a bit hotter and more saturated (as usual) but it looks amazing considering. You can really tell this was a "cheap 'n' quick" job from Hammer, it's technically a bit clumsy (which at times works to its favour) in terms of photography - and watch out for André Morrell repeatedly and obviously changing into a much younger and thinner stuntman during his fight scene!

Not one of Hammer's absolute pinnacle pictures, but a bloody good one and thoroughly enjoyable. I'll be buying the Blu-Ray for sure.
