Christmas Day:

Basket Case - A really fun grimy 16mm New York horror movie. Doesn't get much better than that! Really funny and quirky, with great characters. A bit of an interesting end though... Really look forward to watching the sequels. The blu ray looks really good, but I've never seen the movie before, really grainy too!

Pieces - The holy grail of trashy gore movies, with ridiculous writing, characters and other things. Watching Arrows DVD was like a revelation for me, as I'd only ever seen half of it on a dodgy quality YouTube rip, so this was great! Have a feeling I'll be revisiting this and Basket Case quite a few times.

Boxing Day:

Tetsuo: Body Hammer - Pretty dissapointing overall. Felt repetitive, the score was really cheezy and the characters were really annoying, and it seemed to me like it just tried waaaay too hard to be edgy like the first, with the child explosions, and the people being ripped apart by slow motion gun shots. Piece of advice for any more, please don't try to explain it or give characters back story.

Tetsuo: Iron Man - Aaah, that's better. The classic original, completely nuts, with greats effects and cool fight and chase scenes. Explains nothing, and has an absolutely amazing score. A truly awesome movie! The blu ray of this had amazing detail in still shots, but an awful lot of that was lost in movement. But the good thing about the still shots, is that the stop motion looked amazing!! Really REALLY grainy too.

27th:

Jaws: Best. Blu Ray. EVER!! Screw The Dark Knight, this is definantly the best blu ray PQ wise I own now. Looks like it was shot yesterday! Looks really good converted to 3D also. Nothing needs to be said about the movie, except it's a classic!

Class Of Nuke Em High: As usual for Troma, crazy. Teens smoke nuclear pot and mutate, Cretins threaten people, wierd shit happens. Over all, a fun crazy movie, with an annoying theme song. And I hated that asshole with the rings, he really annoyed me. Has the fat guy from Street Trash and Toxic Avenger in it too! Now I can see why people always mistake Street Trash for a Troma movie. The blu ray never really popped with detail, but I assume that's because it will never look that great, due to source material. Hilarious extras though.

Rewatched "Burial Ground" just recently and really enjoyed it this time around- after giving it a pretty poor review a good few years back (on the ABUK board)

Okay, it's still crap- but in a really entertaining hybrid-of-eurosleaze-trash kind of way

So many funny lines, from the "I'm your friend"-opening sequence over to some interesting musing about a female character's wardrobe to the ingenius "May be, it's something in the house they want."- dialogue... add to that below-standard-but-excessive Italian-style splatter galore and an unintentionally funny "bad ending"- and you have the perfect movie, if you're in "one of those moods"....

I'm pretty sure I'm one of the few people who think that this film is somewhat overrated by many, I dont ceases to amaze me by the amount of positive reviews it received and still receive.

Yes, it certainly is entertaining and has some good points and some noteworthy scenes, but there are other scenes too implausible, and the worst of all some forced situations that fall into the cliché due to lack of pace and that bad mixture of genres.

It's good, but not as great as some claim it is.

I'm with you. I thought all of the 'shocking' content felt really forced, and I found the film as a whole oddly smug and annoying . . .

A postscript to my last post re the Universal Monsters - a word of warning, the last half hour of The Creature From the Black Lagoon was totally screwed on my disc. I thought it was my player but on checking Amazon reviews, others have experienced the same problem. I just made the 3 month return date (Santa bought it for me in October) so if you haven't watched it you probably should, to check its OK. Worrying how many ancient purchases are sitting there on my shelves, unreturnable and potentially defective!

PS - Suzgina - can't believe you enjoy the screeching of Una O'Connor?! I feared her ear shattering outbursts more than the damn monsters, what was Whale thinking.....
