I saw Les Misérables at the cinema today and thought it was an astonishing piece of filmmaking with great performances by the entire cast, particularly Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, with excellent music and production design, set decoration, costumes, CGI etc.

When it finished, just about everyone in the cinema gave it a standing ovation – the first time that's ever happened when I've seen a film in the cinema. Highly recommended, even if you aren't a big fan of musicals.

I just finished watching the latest Studio Ghibli film 'From Up On Poppy Hill' it's easily the best Ghibli film for years, probably better than Howl's Moving Castle even! Such beautiful animation, the story was really sweet and the characters are so likeable.

Quite a stark contrast from Berberian last night

Yeah, dodgy Hong Kong version off ebay, can't wait for a legit UK release.

I watched my favourite movie yet again tonight - I realise I'm a boring git and promise to watch some more edgy, novel fare soon. Said top movie is not only stunningly beautiful in every scene but presents an amazing character portrayal of a complex man who is fundamentally good yet doomed by his flaws which are exacerbated by a crippling social/historical universe and a shit of an inherited son. At least that's my take - name that movie folks and lets here your own all time great, title or description, choice is yours! (Friday night drunks only)

In fact, in my mind it would have been a much bolder move to not have any subtitles and really play upon the fish-out-of-water aspect of the story, so the parts in Italian we, the viewers, don't have an idea what the Italians are saying.

However small gripe aside, it was a brilliant and original film, really enjoyed it - last 20 minutes were ****ing insane, I think I need to watch the last half an hour again and see what happens
Taking a friend to go see this tomorrow, haven't seen it yet.

Can you turn the subtitles off on the Berberian disc? I'd definitely like to rewatch it without them - I agree it detracts from the fish out of water aspect somewhat . . .
