Zombieland. (2009)

Zombieland is, typically of a Jesse Eisenberg film, a rom-com. At its heart its the usual story of boy meets girl and girl eventually falls in love with boy over the course of the movie. The slightly unusual thing about Zombieland is that its a rom-com masquerading as a horror film.

Except when you come to look at it Zombieland isn't really a horror film as the comedy aspects easily outweigh any horror and the zombie threat is pretty non-existant, at no point in the film did i feel any of the four main characters would actually die, because for huge swathes of the film there aren't any zombies. Their presence is mainly felt in a few amusing vignettes in the first twenty minutes showing how Eisenberg became what he thinks is a lone survivor in a world now populated by zombies. In truth this is all very entertaining but its as good as the film gets.

As the film reaches its theme park destination the jokes have long since subsided and the romance slowly judders to a halt. We then finish in a fun free, thrill free, action packed climax as we all shrug our shoulders and wonder why they bothered.

The Transporter 2 (Louis Leterrier, 2005)

Whilst not a patch on the first (too yankified for my taste hem hem), it perks up during Cory Yuen's sequences. Can't wait to see the 3rd, which I see is in my local library haha.

Transporter 3 is a big step up from the fairly lack luster second film i thought.

Noted. Death Race was in a local charity shop, so may pick that up on way home....

No doubt it is a great film - maybe it's my age, but as I totter past my mid 40s, I find this kind of grainy, grim 70/early 80s American 'realist' horror (see also Deathdream, Combat Shock, Deranged, Maniac etc) increasingly hard to sit through. It's like I'm experiencing backwards evolution (devolution?) and now find the out and out schlockers like Squirm, Basket Case (OK, half and half that one!) and The Omen more palatable for an evenings entertainment. Still loving the old classics though - Dawn of the Dead, Exorcist, Suspiria et al, so maybe there's hope for me yet...

Havn't really sat down and watched an actual DVD in a quite a while!!
But, I watched Green Butchers last night, and Deadgirl the night before.
I thought both were pretty good - Green Butchers was a lot funnier than I was expecting!

"Dead Girl" is a great film and one of the best zombie films in recent years.
