CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF
Hammer classic with Oliver Reed tearing it up under Roy Ashton's truly wonderful make up. Funnily enough, I was never a massive fan of this one, but watching it again on Final Cut's wonderful looking blu ray ( and with the cuts restored ) has made me re-evaluate it big time. Terrific.

ANTHROPOPAGOUS
Tisa Farrow and co battle monster George Eastman in this notorious nasty. Having only watched this on a crappy ( cut ) dvd, this new blu ray from 88 Films is a revelation. I know some have been a bit critical of the pq, but it looks pretty bloody good to me!
Not the greatest film in your collection, but great to have it on blu. Excellent 42nd Street documentary too. Let's hope 88 release its superior sequel of sorts ABSURD.

From 1967 part 2:

Bonnie and Clyde - Classic biopic about the two infamous outlaws. One of the first in the New Hollywood or American New Wave genre. Jack Warner apparently hated the movie.

Frankenstein Created Woman - Review: Frankenstein Created Woman (1967)

The Magnificent Two - Morcambe & Wise star in their third and last big screen picture, and like their two earlier attempts this fails because their brand of comedy cant stretch to an hour and half. They're fine at the short comedy sketch but not feature length outings.

Belle De Jour - Forget '50 Shades of Grey' this French picture is far more sexy and erotic.

Follow That Camel - The second 'Carry on' picture not to have the 'Carry on' moniker. This was Phil Silvers one and only Carry on. Great stuff!

Carry On Doctor - Originally concieved to be the last 'Carry On' This fifteenth entry into the franchise brings us back to the medical profession. It was also mean't to bring to an end the 'Doctor' series of films produced by Betty E Box, wife of Carry On producer Peter Rodgers. A portrait of James Robertson Justice hangs in the hospital foyer as the hospitals founder. However neither franchise would end here. All the usual carry on members are here bar one or two.

Django Kill!...If You Live, Shoot! - One of the many spaghetti westerns that tried to cash in on Sergio Corbucci's classic which starred Franco Nero. However this has nothing to do with the gunslinger other than the title, (outside of Italy). Starring Tomas Milian this movie ran into problems with both the Italian censors as well as the British ones.

The Last Killer - Another 'Django' cash in movie although this one does actually have a 'Django'.

Branded to Kill - I'm none to sure whether this is mean't as a drama or a comedy. I thought I was going to be in for something special but it really didn't seem that way to me.

Day of Anger - Review: https://www.cult-labs.com/forums/cul...day-anger.html

The Vengeance of Fu Manchu - Christopher Lee returns as the villanous Oriental. Here he plans to take his revenge on Nayland Smith by replacing the Inspector with a doppleganger and kidnapping the real one. Its a so-so caper.

Cool Hand Luke - Finishing off 1967 with a prison drama that won George Kennedy an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Its star, Paul Newman lost out to Rod Steiger for Best Actor. Features the classic scene where Newman's character eats fifty eggs within an hour.

Time for a few Grimmfest reviews...

Thursday

The Hallow

A tree surgeon moves with his wife and young child, the local forest is set to be sold off to a private firm and all the trees cut down. The locals are unhappy about this and at first they think the local farmer is trying to scare them off with tales of things in the woods. However, as this is a horror film there are things in the woods which soon begin to terrorise them.
The director cited films as diverse as Pan's Labyrinth, straw dogs, Evil dead 2 and The Thing as his influences and stylistically you can see these influences throughout. The closest comparison I can think of is the Kevin costner film The New Daughter which had some similar ideas, however the Costner one was pretty restrained and slow burning where this is more 'balls to the wall' with its depictions of monster attacks. Its a terrific film and certainly worth seeking out when the opportunity presents itself.

The Box

Short film from FX artist Shaune Harrison. This one stars Dominic Brunt as a lonely guy who orders a 'ghost in a box' off ebay with disastrous result. It's a decent little short that's both funny and macabre. Also has a terrific performance from a cat.

Snatchers

A little baffling, its a short that felt more like style over substance when a couple return home to find an intruder in their home.

Driven

Produced locally to me, this one is a short about a man tormented by his sat nav. It's a great little short with a nice twist and delivers its plot clearly and directly. Perhaps I'm biased but I enjoyed this one.

Process

another short, this one has Corries Bruce Jones in a Sci-fi that works as a metaphor for dementia. Well shot and acted but did little for me.

Blood sucking bastards.

Joey Kern steals the film as a dysfunctional office drone in a call centre that sells cheap crap to people via cold calls. Fran Kranz (Cabin in the woods) plays Evan who aspires to be a manager. He discovers to his horror that an old nemesis from college has been hired in his place. Worse still he's gradually vampirising the entire office! While there's not a great deal original in the film BSB manages to deliver with the laughs and gore, its depiction of office politics is also great and as someone currently working in a call centre (though not selling stuff) I can really empathise with the film.

El Gigante

Another short, this one fusing Mexican wrestling and the texas chainsaw massacre to great effect. It's brutal, bloody and darkly comic, hopefully it'll be expanded to a full feature as it would work well as one. terrific end to the nights films.

Friday

German Angst.

A three film anthology from three German film-makers including Jorg Buttgereit. Its weird that Jorg's entry is not the most f*** up. His film comes first and deals with a disturbed young woman who begins discussing her guinea pigs before moving on to torture and castrate a man she has tied up. It might be all in her head, possibly she might be abused. It leaves a lot to the audience to figure out but still packs quite a punch. The second film is where it really gets dark as a young deaf-mute couple explore Germany only to get set upon by a group of neo-nazis. The boyfriend has a charm that allows people to swap bodies and his girlfriend activates it so he swaps with the main skin head. This one made me feel really uncomfortable but that seems to be the point as its exploring one of the darker chapters of German history. Really f**** difficult though. The third and final film goes all lovecraftian as a heartbroken photographer arranges to meet a girl online and ends up getting dragged into a weird supernatural sex cult. This is a great segment as well that manages to be very dark and moody while still feeling like light relief after the last story.
Overall a great anthology and one I'll be picking up!

Scream

Shown as tribute to the late, great Wes Craven its hard to believe this is coming up to 20 years old. I remember sneaking in to see it on its release at the old local flea-pit before I was 18! It gets a lot of shit from horror fans but in fairness its a well executed, fairly tense slasher that came at a point when Horror was mostly absent from cinemas and had been for a long time. Its very easy to be dismissive but the film actually holds up well and the fact that it proved to Hollywood that there was still a market for Horror is still something to applaud it for. Perhaps People under the stairs might have been a better choice but it was good to revisit this film and I may have to dig out my DVD's and watch them again.

Landmine goes click

I'm going to say right from the get go that I f*****g loved this film. I also need to stress that the less I say will be better for anyone reading as going into this blind really helps. Basically its about three Americans out hiking in Georgia when one of them stands on a landmine, it then proceeds from there into really nasty territory before delivering a really harsh critique on the morality of revenge and things escalating beyond peoples intentions.
Check it out!

He never died

From on terrific film to another, He never died features Henry Rollins as a cannibal battling his addiction while getting to know the daughter he never knew he had and dealing with some gangsters intent on abducting him.
Essentially a dialogue heavy character study of Rollins character this one works for a number of reasons. Firstly Rollins is absolutely brilliant and really carries the film. Secondly the dialogue is genuinely funny and well written, it had me in stitches in places in a good way. Essentially laughing with the film not at it. Thirdly, when the gore comes its well done, shocking but funny at the same time. This is another must see and one I hope hits blu-ray.

Cherry tree

It was.....ok. Perhaps it was due to the fact that it came right after two genuinely great films but Cherry Tree was a little disappointing. The script seems to be the main issue, packed with cliche and unconvincing character development. There are some nice visuals to be had and some sexy witches but this was an underwhelming experience...

Turbo Kid

This is more like it! Possibly the most straight up enjoyable film I've seen all year. Essentially a parody/tribute to post apocalyptic movies, BMX, Anime and comic books. Its about a kid living alone in the wasteland, scavenging stuff while out on his BMX. He meets a weird pink haired stalker girl and ends up running afoul of Michael Ironsides gang who are turning people into water. This one is both hilariously fun, spectacularly gory and made by people who really love what they are doing.

The Hive.

Had to leave early and missed it. However word of mouth wasn't great.
