Dr Who & the Daleks

Peter Cushing plays a different kind of Dr Who. Rather than a time lord from Gallafrey he's a kindly grandfather whose built a time machine in his garden that looks like a police phone box. Apparently this was to serve the American audiences by not having to front load the film with a lot of information. With his granddaughter, Roy castle and his bird in tow they end up on skaro and caught up in a conflict with the Daleks & the Thals.
Fans of the series might be a little off put by some of the changes, however this 'Amicus' production has lots to recommend it including a great soundtrack, some interesting set design and a vivid colour scheme. Perhaps the Daleks are a little easy to kill, especially when your aware of how nasty Terry nation intended them to be, but this is a fun films and a great slice of British Sci-Fi.

Dalek invasion of earth - 2150ad

Given the success of Dr Who, this bigger budget sequel was not as financially successful, however it is arguably a better film. Here the Dr, (Cushing again) arrives on earth with two new companions and his Granddaughter. They end up on earth in 2150, heavily devastated by a Dalek invasion. Our heroes must join the resistance and stop the plans to turn the earth into a giant Dalek space ship. There's more Daleks, better effects and the Daleks are capable of a lot more in this sequel. Perhaps it loses the psychedelic alien landscapes, but in trade off we get a nice post apocalyptic sci-fi that really entertains.

Both blu-rays look amazing.

Voice Without A Shadow (1958)

This is the first of 3 films on the Nikkatsu Diamond Guys vol 1 which just come out on Arrow Video, and it starts off strong. It's a Hitchcockian thriller in which the lead protagonist accidentally calls up a wrong number and a murderer answers the phone - why he answers the phone mid-murder is anyone's guess but such is the device of the plot
Tension rises nicely when Asako realises who the murderer is but everything is tied up a little too easily towards the end which ultimately lets the film down.

A solid 3 star film

Nice to see a write-up of this one. My set is ordered with HMV and should hopefully be with me in a few days.

It's well made and the photography is great, just let down a little by the plot but I reckon you'll enjoy it as I did

Poltergeist

it starts of with what you think will be another bit a Spielberg whimsy, with the typical happy american suburb, but things soon take a sinister turn and even though its not partially scary now (it was when i first watched )its has a great atmosphere and tension, thanks largely the cast, story and direction Hooper. a classic. i have the remake which ive not watched yet but i just know its not going to be a patch on this. 9/10

now watching damned in Venice and maybe pulse after. both not seen before.

The Revenant (2015)

Beautiful and brutal. It's not Leo's Oscar film though, Tom stole the show.

5 stars!
