Zombie Flesh Eaters(1979)

I still love good old Zombie Flesh Eaters and always will do. It's stunning gore effects and downright creepy atmosphere will ensure it will always be a favourite of mine.

But, i noticed when i last watched the film back in October how riddled with mistakes it was, and i pointed them out on this very thread. Going back to the film last night i hoped i might not notice those glaring **** ups, but sadly i did, and more as well. Such as...

The zombies... seem to have a mind of their own. The one that kills Olga Karlatos. It manoeuvres her head slowly onto the splintered wood. Why? All the other zombies are just lusting after flesh, so why not grab her and pull her through the door? When it shows them later in the film munching on her innards the zombies are slow fumbling creatures with no responses never mind eye to hand coordination. Also there are two village sequences depicting zombies walking down the street and there's a goat. The same village scene is depicted later in the film and the goat is still around. Can zombies differentiate between pumping arteries? In this respect how is a goat different to a human? Perhaps when they get to New York they avoid Sears and only shop at Macy's.

The zombies on Matul in the graveyards are 400 year old Conquistador bodies, 400 years old! Yet aside from a bit of decomposition and some handily placed worms they are almost as good as new. Surely after being buried for 400 years there would be nothing left of them?

Maybe other cult labbers can help me out here and come up with reasons or excuses at the least why Lucio Fulci's most famous and revered film is possibly one of his worst.

Zombie Flesh Eaters. Still a fave but secretly, don't tell anyone, a bit shit!

Good call

When he wrote the rules, George Romero had already established that 'ghouls' eat bugs

But they ignore the alligator/crocodile in Day of the Dead. btw Probably for obvious safety reasons!

Suspension of disbelief..with it you'll believe a man can fly/dogs can have flashbacks/zombies can have different skillsets.

Operation Delta Force 2: Mayday (1997, Yossi Wein)
TVM sequel this time. Under Submerged might have been a better subtitle cough. More undemanding action....with an emotional core ahem. I see there are 5 of these buggers.

Alien Intruder (1993, Ricardo Gale)
This is more like it. A Hardy Boy gets wasted in the prologue, Billy DEE Williams, Tracy Scoggins AND Maxwell Caufield all compete to see who can make the most of very poorly written roles. The premise is literally bananas. Why nae 5 of these instead???

I also love Zombie Flesh Eaters probably for the reasons you outlined. It is a bit flawed in the narrative, continuity, and consistency elements but it is INTERESTING. You can level many criticisms against it, but boring is not one of them.

It is probably why my favourite of Romero's 'Dead' trilogy is probably Dawn of the Dead – the dramatic tonal shifts make it an interesting watch, even though Night of the Living Dead and Day of the Dead are arguably better made and more consistent films. 'Dawn' moments of fun which are absent from the other two, whether it is the slapstick violence or bizarre humour from the biker gang.

There are bona fide masterpieces which I will watch infrequently and deeply flawed films which I will revisit time and time again because I find them more interesting. This isn't a slight against the 'superior' films, which I watch when I have the time and attention to devote to them. When I want some escapism, I don't care if the film doesn't entirely make sense or has major continuity errors – it helps me unwind and that is exactly what I want at that particular time.

Going back to ZFE, how many other films include a woman scuba-diving in a G string, a zombie fighting a shark, someone killed by having her eyeball impaled on a large wooden splinter and conquistadors rising from the dead? The level of imagination to include all these elements in a 90 minute film whilst maintaining a coherent narrative makes it a special film. Although it isn't the best film Lucio Fulci ever made, it's probably the most entertaining.

I've recently seen - Hacksaw Ridge, Logan and Kong: Skull Island. I enjoyed them all.

I rather like Alien Intruder. As you mention it's a decent cast.

You can be sure the next time my computer gets a virus, infection, whatever, it won't look like Tracy Scoggins.
