@ Cinematic Shocks

Just read your review of K-Shop. Nice one!

It's been praised a few times on here but i've added it to my wishlist as you've re-jogged my memory about it.

The void

A small town Sheriff takes an injured man to a closing down hospital for treatment. While there the place is surrounded by white garbed cultists intent on keeping people in. Then people begin changing.
The central criticism of The void is the weak narrative structure. This is a little unfair as its the kind of film where one would expect this to be secondary. It could have used some more money to expand things a little and give it a more 'film like' look however given the films a kick-starter project and funds must have been low a lot of its problems can be forgiven with the right audience. What the film is, is a throwback to 80's prosthetic effects driven horror of films like Hellraiser, society, from beyond ect. In fact it would have been unsurprising to see the Empire pictures logo at the beginning. For me it was a real treat, the sort of thing Hollywood doesn't really bankroll anymore. I'm glad I've got the blu-ray on pre-order. After beyond the gates and other great titles being put out DVD only its the kind of release I want to support.

Oh, and mild spolier for the curious. The entity they are worshipping is probably Nyarlathotep. So a bonus for mythos fans.

Thanks, Dem. I thought K-Shop was a very good little film, but unfortunately, it's received little attention.

WAX MASK – At the end of the nineties there wasn't much blood left in the Italian genre scene at all, but 'Wax Mask' is a pleasing coda to the final days of classically lurid schlock. It's set in the late nineteenth century and involves a mysterious wax works and some giallo type murders, done with a metallic claw as opposed to a black glove. It's by fx guy Sergio Stivaletti, so there's a sprinkling of gore and some prosthetic wackiness, although I'd have liked to have seen more of that stuff and perhaps even a bit more of the shitty first wave CGI that crops up in places. Latter aside, it's visually very nice, kind of over-crowded and opulent like an orgy in a drawing room (which sort-of happens at one point). The best thing about it is still the 'Terminator' reference, though.

THE VOID – Latter day horror flick which seems keen to wear its eighties influences on its sleeve, although perhaps needs to be viewed on its own terms rather than as a homage to Carpenter et al. It's about a hospital siege type situation with some very Lovecraftian rumblings going on in the background, or maybe in the foreground, as the over-the -top outbursts of practical effects proudly display an inter-dimensional gloopiness. I was entertained, and found myself wanting to be blown away in places, but in the end wasn't. 'The Void's 'Thing'-fancying ambitions only stretch so far, and, whilst it occasionally delivers some effective gore and distressed latex, it stumbles with its pacing and overly clunky genre devices. Could've been a whole lot more mysterious, but, for what it is, it's satisfying and I recommend people check it out.

I really don't know about The Void.

It's in my wishlist and i was going to buy it on release, but although K and Frankie both like it they both suggest it's not that great either.

It's worth a watch. Could be worth streaming first.

It bored me to death, just give it a watch first before purchasing.

I said it would divide people in my review, I really liked it and have it on order, but I hated The Babadook, which most people seem to think was brilliant

I’ve seen The Void, but I didn’t give it a fair crack of the whip, as I was very tired when I watched it. So, I’ll reserve passing final judgement until I’ve watched it properly. As it stands now, I would say it’s pretty good and worth a look.

The Babadook is f**king atrocious!

I'll wait until The Void is on sale in HMV's 5 for £20 offer i think.
