Bushwick The film opens with a young couple leaving Bushwick subway station in New York. As they make their way to the surface a man runs down into the subway on fire. The boyfriend heads up to the surface and is promptly killed in an explosion. The girl, Lucy, quickly discovers the streets are in chaos as black clad soldiers are fighting cops and locals. It appears the city is in a state of war. Lucy runs into a man named Stupe (played by Dave Bautista) who claims he is a Janitor, however he seems to have some military training. The pair try to make their way through the chaos in a bid to escape the city This ones on Netflix and is worth checking out. It's done in what appears to be one shot, however I'm sure they have cleverly hidden the edits. It's clearly low budget and in places is vision is probably greater than its resources but as a whole its a surprisingly thrilling film. I'm not surprised it seems to have come from nowhere. I imagine its politically volatile, especially in America. I'm not saying anymore but it'll be clear when you see it and its not what your thinking either. I think this has led to dragging its IMDB score down a little as if the politics were removed this would be nearer a 7 or 8. I really dug this film. I dug it a lot. Hopefully it should build up a fan base and become a cult movie as its a hell of a ride. 13th The title is taken from ther 13th amendment in the American constitution. This is the one that deems slavery unconstitutional with the exception of convicted criminals. That's the hook for the documentary as it looks at America from post civil war to today and the growing levels of incarceration, especially the large numbers of African Americans who are now being used as a source of cheap labour for various large corporations. It looks at the demonisation of African Americans stemming from D.W. Griffiths Birth of a nation which is credited as being responsible for the revival of the KKK. The burning crosses for example were taken by the KKK from the film. It then goes through Jim Crowe, Civil rights, the war on drugs through to the modern day. Its a great little documentary that helps put things into context. For example if you've been online you have probably seen plenty of people failing to grasp the notion of the Black lives matter movement. Usually resulting in all lives matter or no lives matter slogans in response. It doesn't say Black lives matter more than anyone else's however though I think a lot of people see that in the sentence. framed in the history of Black culture presented here the movement makes a lot of sense. It could have covered more perhaps. Certainly it might have looked at geographical segregation (dealt with in films like Boyz'n the hood) and the evidence that crack cocaine may have been introduced to Black communities by the CIA. However I suspect the film-makers are tryng to be a bit careful about what they present in the film. Again its on netflix. Perhaps you will agree, perhaps disagree but its worth a go. |

Invasion (1966) An alien ship crash lands in a forest. One of the aliens gets hit by a car and is taken to a hospital, where the doctors discover he isn't human. It turns out that he is escorting some prisoners to prison and now they're free they can do what they want. An interesting little idea, what it lacks is more tension or even a much more satisfying pay off. Which doesn't mean to say it's awful it just leaves you wanting more. 7/10 Sent from my MediaPad T1 8.0 Pro using Tapatalk
