The Deadly Spawn (1983)

Very cheap but very cheerful sci-fi horror. It's impressively effective for its ultra-low budget, with great creature and gore effects, and is nasty mean spirited stuff. The characters are great, even if the acting isn't at times, but it doesn't matter as this was made to be an entertaining little genre flick, and it sure is that.

**** out of *****

Night of the Demons 2 (1994)

Not quite as good as the first, but it's a solid sequel that's still a lot of gory fun.

***1/2 out of *****

Creep 2004

After falling asleep in a subway Kate (Franka Potente) wakes up realises she has missed her train and alone..or so she thinks until something else is in the staion with her.

This was like watching The Hills have eyes and Wrong Turn but in a dark atmospheric railway tunnels where there is nowhere to hide and the light at the end doesnt help.

Sean Harris portrayal as Craig the Creep is amazing and scary at the same time and endured hours of make up process. TIm not sure if i missed anything but there could have added a bit of the background of the creep except a name tag on his wrist that suggests where he has been. This isnt a big budget movie but does have plenty violence in it and a night of survival, to get the best feel about the movie is to watch it in the dark. 7 out of10.

The Slavers.

This German production from Jurgen Goslar is a bit of a nostalgic kick for me. In '77/78 I lived in the ass end of nowhere called Fort Victoria in Zimbabwe and a young Boo wandered into a local café only to see Tarzan having a milkshake! Tarzan being Ron Ely! I even called him Tarzan and was totally star struck. He was delightful and signed a napkin for me. God knows whatever happened to that. He was with Britt Ekland and Ken Gampu who I had no knowledge of at the time. This also stars Ray Milland, Cameron Mitchell (Buck, from High Chaparral) and Trevor Howard. Very un-PC, it has had a very limited release, only available on The Grindhouse collection Vol 2 in a VHS rip. Cannot really recommend this at all but for me a treasured guilty pleasure! Oh, white men and Arabs enslave and treat terribly the black population.

Kung Fu; Trailers of Fury.

Bruce Lee was my second hero after Tarzan when I was young but kung fu movies are not my usual fare. There are a few good trailers here but more old skool than I prefer. Great if you're into this though. I love trailer compilations and have about 10 of them but this is the only one of chop socky. Might have to get part 2.

Dawn of the Dead.

This is the XT 4 BD edition with all 4 cuts of the film. Romero's, Argento's, Complete and Extended. I had never seen the Extended edition before and watched it this afternoon. The picture quality was stunning and I honestly have no bad things to say about this collection. This is the best zombie movie ever. Full stop. No. Don't argue with me, you're wrong! This is limited to 1000 units and the only two places I found selling it are Diabolik and D&T Mailorder. Selling fast if you want one.

Sharktopus vs Pteracuda
Evil scientist man combines pterodactyl dna with barracuda dna. Russian spy takes control, goes on rampage; sharktopus fights it. People try to stop both.
One for 2018 schlocktober I think. Oh god it's kinda enjoyably painful in the same way gouging your eyes out with a leaf is. The acting is pisspoor, but people die.

avengers infinity war.

Not going to spoil this as it's best going into it knowing as little as possible.
Basically it's a sprawling space opera with the fate of trillions in the balance as Thanos seeks the infinity gems. The marvel approach of having loads of seperate films for each character pays dividends as the huge cast needs no introduction so the actions kicks in right away and it flows mostly really well. The star of the film is Thanos himself. Remember the awful Steppenwolf from Justice league? Well this is how it should be done. A CGI character brought to life with motion capture manages to give a great performance. He's a slightly different Thanos than fans of the original Infinity gauntlet comics might remember. Not so much death obsessed instead he's a genocidal madman who is genuinely convinced he's doing the right thing. It's a genuinely interesting take on the character as he looks down on the heroes with a mixture of bemusement and contempt that they might try and stop him from 'saving the universe'. Marvels been upping it's game with villains lately with vulture and killmonger both being rounded characters with plausible motivations for doing the things they do. With Thanos I would genuinely argue they've managed to create the sort of space opera villain that George Lucas wishes he could write. A genuine monster who believes he is absolutely and unquestionably correct in what he is doing.
The film is funny when it needs to be and had me chuckling but then it throws in moments of genuine shock and darkness that's more 'mature' than the teen angst level of doom that DC has produced up until now.
So basically I really dug this.

Bought a few blind buy releases from Network over the past few months.
One i recently enjoyed was The Solitary Child, starring the Hammer Horror Queen, Barbara Shelley, who plays the young wife of a man who was aquitted over the killing of his first wife.
It's a pretty decent little thriller, despite the meague running time of just over an hour. Well made and atmospheric.
Nice print as well, with good clear sound.
Well recommended.

Herchell Gordon Lewis's SCUM OF THE EARTH (1963)

Early 'roughie' by Lewis which charts the downfall of a sweet and innocent (teenage apparently) girl as she gets coerced into porno! I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Much better acting than I was expecting having only seen Blood Feast before and it also looks great, although the print is a bit beat up and scratchy but it doesn't distract.

I had a quick look at Blood Feast, having recently rewatched the 'Something Weird' BD of it and it looks bloody fantastic, and miles better than the 'brand new' 4K restoration of Grease which I just bought! I might watch it with the H.G.L. comm track later.
