I used to love Saved by the Bell when I was a teen. But the sequel series Saved by the Bell: The College Years was awful.

I disagree that this is one of the worst films ever made. If the critics could've seen it for what it actually was at the time of its release then it would've been better received. Because this is a very entertaining satirical piece of exploitation, which just so happens to have a big budget and is produced and released by a major studio.

***1/2 out of *****
The Blu-ray is on offer at the moment in HMV's 5 for £30 deal, so i might pick that one up.

I find merit in all the Verhoeven films i've seen. But i still prefer his earlier dutch films like Soldier of Orange.

Pigs 1972 (also titled Daddy's Deadly Darling, The 13th Pig, Horror Farm, Daddy's Girl, The Strange Exorcism of Lynn Hart, The Strange Love Exorcist and Roadside Torture Chamber)

Directed by character actor Marc Lawrence it stars he and his daughter Toni Lawrence as a woman, Lynne, who has escaped from an insane asylum (where she was committed to after murdering her father who tried to rape her). She gets a job at a diner owned by Zambrini (played by her aforementioned father) who also has a habit of feeding corpses to his pigs.

Lynne ends up murdering people who remind her of her father while Zambrini tries covering up for her by disposing of her victims in his usual way.

This film took me by surprise. This was distributed by Troma and despite being very low budget, has almost none of the Troma tropes. No wacky humour etc. The acting was very good, It was always interesting and Lynne is as batshit insane as they come. It might be far too slow for some people, but I really enjoyed this. 8/10

Stuck on The Birds. Yep, it still works.

Pyewacket (2017)

A frustrated, angst-ridden teenage girl awakens something in the woods when she naively performs an occult ritual to evoke a witch to kill her mother.

Pyewacket is one of those films that treads a well traveled path of angsty Gothic chic. However in this instance actress Nicole Sanchez pulls it off well as she basically carries the movie on her own. The Walking Dead actress, Laurie Holden (Andrea) plays her mum and there are reasons for her daughters misery but twists lie ahead for their relationship especially when the film takes a left turn as the two reconcile their broken mother / daughter bond.

I enjoyed Pyewacket. It's well made and well acted. It may be too slow burning for some and i can understand that, but for me the pace built up in a beautifully controlled broody manor to a finale which proved thought provoking and shocking.

The Magus (1968)

A second watch in the space of ten days for this Greek set oddity starring Michael Caine, Anthony Quinn and Candice Bergen.

The photography remains stunning as does the beautiful Bergen but the plot is all over the place. Probably best summed up in a documentary interview with Michael Green (Son of the director Guy) who acted in the film. The actors didn't know what was happening, those behind the camera didn't know either, even author John Fowles was clueless so he rewrote his novel a few years later.

I doubt i'll bother watching it again.

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
After the success of the Blair Witch Project; fans descend upon maryland to view where the film was made. A group of people go on a local tour and during the night, get drunk and black out.
A strange one, obviously it was a cynical cash grab from the studio that was rushed. However something just makes it feel stand out for me. Maybe it's because it does something different. Maybe it's just that the Adam Wingard shitfest makes this a masterpiece.
One to watch if only out of curiosity.

I don't know why, but I like it. I'm almost certain a lot of post-production tampering went on with the studio.
