This is the real sequel to the '76 Kong film.

"King Kong Lives" in which our hairy hero gets has a heart operation before falling in love and (of course) finally going apeshit and smashing shit up.

Really bad but i found it hilarious.

Poltergeist (1982)

Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg's film is a throw everything at the screen exercise in film making and about as scary and intense as a bowl of Cornflakes.

Like so many kids films of the eighties - The Goonies, The Lost Boys - I'm looking at you here - this clearly had to be seen at the time to be truly loved because as someone in their forties watching this for the first time it really wasn't very good at all.

I showed my flatmate last year after talking it up for ages, he fell asleep, which says it all I struggled to get through it myself despite loving it when I was younger.

I had a terrifying experience watching it for the first time at school on the day before summer holidays and every damn person in that room jumped out of their skin when the clown was under the bed

I'm sure many of the people here love Poltergeist but it's clearly more Spielberg than Hooper. Think of the atmosphere in Hooper's horror films of the time - there's absolutely none of that here. The Funhouse and Salem's Lot came directly before Poltergeist. It really doesn't compare.

If there was ever a film where you can feel the producers influence it's this one! I don't know why he didn't just direct it himself he's clearly pulling all of the strings!

I think we all know Hooper didn’t actually direct the film

I still enjoy watching it now as much as I did when I was a kid, but I also still love watching the Goonies and the Lost Boys (actually watched LB on TV on Friday). The scene that always scared me as a kid was when the guy rips his own face off, watching it now it really does look amateurish though

I have to admit i was disappointed. I went into it expecting to love it. Spielberg can do horror and tension. Look at Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park which display examples of both, especially tension. I genuinely thought Poltergeist would be very good.

It's the best scene in it. It does look a bit dodgy but that can be overlooked as it didn't really happen, it was a waking nightmare in the bathroom.
