What Films Have You Seen Recently?

I haven't posted a review for a while,
But 2 films I've seen recently feels the need I should .

Calibre on Netflix I went into this blind, let's just say if not seen this its a must, good old fashioned film making on how films should be made, its draws you in etc.
Its bleak and grim, about 2 friends who go hunting up Scotland but has the usual cliche some locals are welcoming some aren't, all goes wrong when they shoot a child by accident then its all goes downhill for them from there, I'd put it up there as one of the best films I've seen in recent years, if you think of the French films Ordeal and Frontiers then you're on the right lines of this being the British equivalent.


Pihu again on Netflix , for those who are criticizing this are missing the point of the film, its like the film Buried there is only one person in it a 2yr old the rest is voices ,
So exactly how exciting do you except a film with just one person in it to be ?

it all about highlighting the dangers lurking around the house that can easily harm a child and how easy it is for them to get into dangerous situations, like almost hanging over the balcony because she dropped her doll over it, the child's parent don't get on and her father is away working and the mother has topped herself by taking a overdose and the child is all alone, its starts of from when the child wakes up and the things a two year does when they are playing, or hungry, or trying to wake her mum up. Certain points of the film certainly have you on edge like when the child climbs inside the fridge, worth seeking out .

Director Vinod Kapri said that the idea behind making the film was the question of "what does a toddler do when she is left alone at home?" He also based it on a real life incident that he read in 2014 in a national daily about a four-year-old girl who was left alone at home. He decided to have minimal dialogues in the film, wanted the story to depend on "how the girl behaves", and felt that "every shooting schedule [was] unpredictable.According to him, the film explores issues faced by married couples, and compulsions about the concepts of family and children. Kapri spent four months with the child, getting to know her and familiarise her with the other crew members.

Though the girl had never acted before, Kapri is close friends with her parents, so they agreed for her to act on this project.The film was shot for two hours a day with three cameras placed on the set since Kapri felt "you can’t ask a two-year-old to give another take. Kapri made some changes in the script based on Myra's behavioral patterns. For two months, Myra moved to the flat that was rented for shoot.Kapri had to wait for six months after he had finalised Myra for the film due to production issues. Later, his friend Kishen Kumar came on board as a producer. With a budget of ₹45 lakh (US$65,000), they started shooting the film, but Kumar suffered a cardiac arrest and Kapri had to again seek help for the film's post-production budget

Delirium (Le foto Di Gioia) 1987

A former prostitute runs a successful men's magazine, when her models start being killed she believes she is next to be killed.

This was more crime thriller Giallo rather than a full horror movie from director Lamberto Bava, Serena Grandi plays the lead role Gioia, the former hooker now manager of a few models who meet their demise by a crazed fan. Karl Zinny (Demons and Graveyard Disturbance) plays her wheelchair bound neighbour Mark who has a crush on Gioia and seems to intimidate James Stewart from Rear Window. George Eastman plays the ex boyfriend in a small role but not on screen very much, Daria Nicolodi, David Brandon (Stagefright), play the assistants and photgrapher for the models and Lino Salemme (Demons) plays the inspector who is out to catch the killer.

With his father's touch to colourful schemes, lights and a house that may seem to be the focus on everything, its not the best plot to it, it seemed to lose the pace after 10-15 minutes, from the killer's point of view is a bit weird, the acting was not the best from everyone its like they lost interest and the background score im sure is from another Bava movie, If nothing else is available to watch, go with this in a open mind.

The World Is Not Enough (1999)

Although this isn't either James Bond or Pierce Brosnan's finest hour there's still enough to recommend it.

For every negative there is a positive. Whilst Denise Richards doesn't exactly convince as a nuclear scientist and Sophie Marceau and Robert Carlyle are instantly forgettable villains, the film gains credit for giving Judi Dench's M a larger role, the same goes for Robbie Coltrane's Zukovsky, but it's the film's action set pieces that really capture the imagination. From the high speed chase up the Thames pre-credits sequence to the forest cutting helicopters destroying Zukovsky's caviar factory.

Despite being quite lowly ranked in the Bond canon, this is still a better Bond film than any of Daniel Craig's output bar Casino Royale. In fact Craig's Skyfall borrows so much from this film it should offer it some royalties.

Lothar Schramm is on the floor dying after falling from a ladder, unable to shout for help he spends his final moments looking back on his life and his murders.
Not my favourite of Buttgereits work it still has something that kept me drawn to the screen, maybe it was just the non linear narrative, nevertheless it was still a fascinating watch.

I watched this on Sunday, and I agree, it's not my favourite but it is interesting and uncomfortable enough to be worthwhile I'm not entirely convinced that a fall from that ladder onto the floorboards would be enough to crack his head open and kill him

From Russia With Love (1963)

The second in the series meant it hadn't yet settled into any sort of routine and is in fact a superior Cold War thriller more than a typical Bond film as such. In this Bond is attempting to get his hands on a Lektor cryptography device from under the noses of the Russians in Istanbul without knowing he is actually being manipulated by international criminal organisation SPECTRE.

Whilst gadgets and comedy are kept to a minimum From Russia With Love brought us the first very memorable villains in the Bond oeuvre with Rosa Klebb and her deadly shoe and Robert Shaw's excellent assassin Grant who is almost a match for Sean Connery's Bond in a brilliantly staged rail carriage fight.

There's so much to recommend with From Russia With Love i don't know where to begin. Wait, yes i do. Go and listen to Matt Monro's superb theme song and take it from there.

Arguably the very best James Bond film and equally a great film in it's own right.

Body Puzzle (Misteria)1992.

A homicide detective begins to suspect the killings of people are somehow connected to a widow's deceased husband.

Another Bava movie but has all the hallmarks of thecrime thriller Giallo, Joanna Pacula plays the widowwho is receiving body parts from the killer. Tomas Arana (Derailed, The Church) plays the detective who is playing cat and mouse with the killer, Giovanni Lombardo Rice (Cannibal Ferox, The Sect) plays the guy who seems to know alot but dishes out suttle clues. The Story seems to drift way off topic, and the detective seems to find time to jump in the sack with the widow (who wouldn't) the blood and gore may not be the best but watchable, again this is one to view with a open mind.

A random invitation to a Halloween party leads a man into the hands of a rogue collective intent on murdering him for the sake of their art, sparking a bloodbath of mishap, mayhem and hilarity.

The first movie from Jeremy Saulnier the guy behind Blue Ruin & Green room - interesting work, only 1h20m so he doesn't get boring - a mix of comedy/horror with old school special effects. On netflix at the moment.

Lèvres de sang/Lips of Blood

Frederick sees a photograph of a ruined seaside castle, which triggers a strange childhood memory. He then goes on a strange quest, aided by four female vampires, to find the castle and the beautiful woman who lives there.

The 3rd movie I watch from J. Rollin, first was Fascination (not really remember much, need a rewatch), second was Grapes of Death - love it, was such a great movie, and now Lips of Blood - the plot it's a little basic, but it compensates with an amazing photography in the movie, the scenes in the ruined castle are so beautiful - Highly recommended

Short Night of Glass Dolls (La Corta Nottie Delle Bambole Vetro) 1971.

A Journalist's body is found, he is presumed dead but isn't and how he got that way is told in flashbacks while searching for his missing girlfriend.

From something of a slow start, the pace quickened up pretty good, Jean Sorel (the day of the jackal) plays the American journalist in Prague, after a party his girlfriend Mira played by Barbara Bach disappears. He teams up with another journalist and ex partner Jessica played by Ingrid Thulin (The Cassandra Crossing) and is told to back off by the police.

This is a different kind of horror mystery, there is no gore, but dwelves on the psychology of the mind in some way, as how far would a man go to find someone and uncover alot of secrets on the way and who is involved, there is some tense moments, maybe on the edge of your seat times, certainly worth a watch.

The Legacy 1978

An American decorator and her boyfriend accept a job in England unaware of what job they have accepted, they are involved in a bike accident and taken to a stately manor by a millionaire unaware of what awaits them.

This can be viewed as a horror or a murder mystery thriller either way it's still enjoyable. Katherine Ross (The Graduate) takes the lead as the decorator Margaret, Her boyfriend Pete played by Sam Elliott (Road House) seems to have doubts, when other party guests start dying in mysterious ways and same ways as those connected to them met their fate.

Richard Marquand does a good job with directing this film capturing the moody atmosphere with some internal colours by cinematographers Dick Bush and Alan Hume. John Standing (V For Vendetta) has a small minor role as the millionaire Jason, Roger Daltrey (The Who), Charles Grey (Diamonds Are Forever) play some the guests who want to inherit Jason's money, and Ian Hogg (Doctor who: Ghostlight) plays the sinister chauffeur. Worth a watch.
