Some debate about it but could be a chemical imbalance. Good Wikipedia entry here.

Isn't it something to with oxidisation, when the air gets in under the playing surface? I had both sets of Terminator and Silence of the Lambs replaced when they went funny. Other than that, I've never had a disc cease to play anymore. I think Warners also experimented with some cheap glue in the early days of DVD that caused some problems.

Thanks for the replies.

For your information, the discs affected are Esmeralda Bay (older Spanish dvd with Eng language track) and the German Blood Edition of Devil Hunter.

I heard the same possible explanation myself years ago.

And if i recall rightly once the air penetrates inside the disc it causes the resin holding both sides together to crack apart and thus renders the DVD in question unplayable.

LDs were also apparently affected the same way and i lost a great looking release of Jaws 2 due to this technical travesty!

Having a bit of a clearout at the moment and after reading this checked my old Terminator disc - it's a goner. Despite loving that movie I must've only watched in the once when I first got it. Thankfully my AB tins are all ok though

Sadly this was one of the most famous of the 'Rotters' (Silence Of The Lambs being another). Thankfully both re-releases are fine and can be picked up cheaply now.

Like yourselves, terminator and silence plus also rab c nesbit series 4,was also gubbed.
I also bought the one discer of old boy brand new a few years back, and finally got round to playing it the other week, although the disc was a bit patchy and discoloured,it still played fine.

Dunno how many others may be affected in my collection, dreading finding out.
