I think it's brilliant that you are fluent in at least two languages anyway.
Three years of French at school. I still could book a hotel or order something at a restaurant, but most of my active knowledge is gone, unfortunately.

However, I'm still able to read simple French texts. I can follow the story of a French/Italian/Japanese/... film with French subtitles... as long as it's not the adaptation of a Shakespearean play or À la recherche du temps perdu.

I've picked up odd words in Italian from visits there but not enough to be able to watch a subtitled film. I do understand parts of films in Italian dub, mainly general conversation, not enough to figure out who killed who and why in a Giallo.

I’ve got a Sicilian mother and can only speak a few words of Italian, but I can understand it if someone speaks slowly to me, which we all know Italians never do

What's the Arrow release of David Cronenberg's early films like?

Is it any good, or are all the films just arty, pretentious, self-indulgent nonsense?

Stereo is a bit arty but Crimes .... is a template for his 't'ing' imho. I've watched it a few times.
Once watched Stereo with THX 1138 ... that seemed to work etc. If that's any use .....

Is the Hong Kong film Fire of Conscience any good? There's a cheap region 4 dvd on ebay but i'd like some opinions on it if anybody's seen it.

I saw it a few years back starts of slow then got interesting, if you don't mind subtitles it is interesting but midly confusing in some bits but decent action

Subtitles don't bother me at all. I've been watching a lot of Asian films recently and one review compared The Yellow Sea to Fire. I loved The Yellow Sea so I'm going to give it a go.
