I don't own it on dvd but did rent it when it hit vhs. It'd decent but not one i ever bought for the collection. Harvey Keitel is always watchable in my eyes.

For the record the Nic Cage remake is good and i do own that on dvd.

I think it's a very good film, tough, intelligent, and probably Abel Ferrara's best. It features one of Harvey Keitel's best performance, a brilliant piece of acting which Martin Scorsese thought was praise worthy and in one of the best films of the 1990s.

It probably can't hold a candle to the original version, but is the American remake of 'Martyrs' any good?
Demoncrat likes this.

Sometimes you’ve just got to judge for yourself,
But me personally I tend to avoid American remakes of foreign horrors because 99% of the time I find them garbage, watered down and don’t have the same impact.
But if I still want to watch a film then I go by general public and film fans off forums etc, and not some critic off tv or in a magazine.
I saw half a hr and turned it off,
all I’ve ever seen is ppl say it’s terrible and avoid at all cost.
Most people on letterboxd have gave it 2 stars and below,
IMDb it has a rating of 4,
on rotten tomatoes has a rating of 9.

So that should give you a general idea

Saw that at the pictures. A fun time was had by all. I'd keep it for a special occasion, like Xmas Day

If they had called the remake just Port Of New Orleans, it would have drawn less flack imho. Ferrara's comments about it are fair and reasonable imho.

REWATCH.
