John Waters Returns to Filmmaking After Nearly 20 Years to Direct Adaptation of His Novel ‘Liarmouth’ / Variety

"Legendary filmmaker John Waters is stepping back to the director’s chair for the first time in 18 years, for an adaptation of his 2022 novel “Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance.” Waters — a pioneering independent filmmaker who catapulted to cinema infamy with bad taste masterpieces like 1972’s “Pink Flamingos” and 1981’s “Polyester” — will write and direct the project for Village Roadshow, with Steve Rabineau producing. It will be Waters’ first movie since 2004’s “A Dirty Shame.”

“‘Liarmouth’ is the craziest thing I’ve written in a while so maybe it’s fitting that my novel was shocking enough to jumpstart the engine of my film career,” the 76-year-old filmmaker said in a statement. “Thrilled to be back in the movie business, hopefully to spread demented joy to adventuresome moviegoers around the world.”

The novel follows three generations of women in the same family: Adora, who runs an unauthorized veterinarian practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan that specializes in plastic surgery for pets; Adora’s daughter Marsha, a pathological thief and misanthrope who is the “liarmouth” of the title; and Marsha’s daughter Poppy, who runs a trampoline park on the outskirts of Baltimore. Eventually, they all conspire to kill each other.

“Liarmouth” is, somehow, Waters’ debut novel. In the 1980s and ’90s, he shifted from the gleeful fringe of subversive cult cinema into a kind of mainstream avatar for his own queer, campy sensibility, especially after his 1988 film “Hairspray” was adapted into a Tony-winning Broadway hit musical in 2002, and then re-adapted into a 2007 feature film. But after “A Dirty Shame,” Waters stepped away from filmmaking, publishing a series of non-fiction books, touring with spoken word performances, and appearing in a series of cameos in other film and TV projects."

Great that Terrifier 2 has had a US cinema release bringing in over $1.2m in it's first weekend.

It's already well in profit as it cost just $250,000 to make via an Indiegogo campaign.

Depraved horror movie causes viewers to vomit, faint in the theater / New York Post

"While most horror films keep people up at night, slasher flick “Terrifier 2” is apparently so graphic that viewers are vomiting and passing out in their seats. Social media users shared their appalling viewing experiences ahead of the special release of director Damien Leone’s film Thursday.

“My friend passed out and the theater called an ambulance. Highly recommended” exclaimed one satisfied viewer on Twitter"

Tbh I haven't even seen first one, for some reason it just doesn't grab me.

Confusingly, 'Terrifier 2' is actually the third film that Art The Clown appears in

He was first featured in the anthology movie 'All Hallows Eve' (2013) before the first 'Terrifer' (2016)

Why is it confusing?

All Hallows Eve was a trilogy of tales presented in anthology format. Art the Clown was in the first of these stories and proved so successful that he had his own spin off film made called Terrifier followed by the recently released in US cinemas Terrifier 2 which was made by crowd funding.

Both films are excellent examples of low budget horror and i look forward to getting Terrifier 2 next week.

Wrestling fans should note that Chris Jericho is in Terrifier 2.

Yeah, me too. Watched it again last night in prep for the second one on the 24th (release date on Blu / dvd).

Not quite sure it's fun for all the family. Haha! Although it definitely works for me.

The strong gore would have seen it banned, black listed and totally demonised by the BBFC back in the 80's.

So much more to my taste than all this sanitised Blumhouse shit pretending to be horror in recent years.

It's not very good really. The only thing about it that David Copperfield's in it. The kills are anemic and unmemorable.

In it's third weekend Terrifier 2 is now at #7. Entered at #11, moved up to #8 in it's second week and hit #7 in it's third.

It made $1,895,500 which is up 83.9%on last week. It's total now stands at $5,256,000 which is pretty awesome for a film that cost a quarter of a million to make.

J Harker 24th October 2022 02:29 PM

All this talk of Terrifier 2. I have to admit I turned the first one off, which is rare for me. It just seemed like gore for the sheer sake of it.

Here a full interview about making of Terrifier 2, and plans for a 3rd and possible 4th,

Just a snippet from the interview,

Where do you see the “Terrifier” franchise going from here?

I had a “Part 3” in mind when writing “Part 2.” There are so many questions brought up in “Part 2” that are not answered, and that was part of the design because I know I’m going into a “Part 3.” I pretty much have the entire treatment ready for “Part 3,” but it’s getting so big that it could potentially split into a “Part 4” because I wouldn’t want to make another 2 hour 20 minute movie. So we’ll see

I haven't seen this listed here, but have patience with this trailer. Put it this way - it's not often where I find myself intrigued by a Jennifer Lopez rom-com.
