There are quite a few including, perhaps predictably, Citizen Kane which I don't think could be improved at all. Also, again predictably from me, I don't see any room for improvement in the theatrical version of The Exorcist, which is why I believe it is one of the greatest films ever made.

Not even the odd car chase, some fight scenes and a comedy sidekick? Man, you are hard to please.

Citizen Kane could definitely do with all those. Not to mention a cameo from Ron Jeremy.

I might be alone in finding it a trifle boring.

Call me boring, but I think Citizen Kane would suffer if it had a car chase, fight scene and Ron Jeremy cameo. In any case, I find the screenplay to be extremely witty and funny without the presence of a comedy sidekick!

Mr. Feratu - with all due respect, sir, there is nothing funny about WANTING, NEEDING and HAVING TO HAVE a particular pair of shoes that you have seen in the window of a shop

As a mere male, I really don't expect you to understand this, but believe me - it is a BIG thing

There are two I consider perfect. Coppola's The Conversation is flawless and I don't see how Melville's Army Of Shadows could be improved.
