Aptly Themed Double Features

My latest twin set was "Axe" and "Pieces"


Now now, don't blame me for the title change. A band called "The Choke" are playing a gig in an old warehouse. The whole band and the guy who runs the club are "Arsewipes" who, you instinctively know, are going to die. Why the name change? Who cares?

"Pieces", on the other hand was well worth watching. It is the tale of a spoiled little boy whose mommy doesn't like him doing porny jigsaw puzzles... with dire consequences.

4/10 for "Axe" ("The Choke"), 8/10 for "Pieces". Would have been better if it were "Pieces" and "One Piece"

Let me make it clear though, sequels and remakes don't count! SCM's Ant-ilicious theme is great as would be "Steamboat Willy" and "Ben", "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" and "Monkeyshines" but not "Nightmare on Elm Street" #1-37, that's just OCD. And don't think that you can get away with a link around a single character, story or actor, be inventive like our good friend SCM was - "ants" what a theme!

Watch 2 or more thematically linked flicks and give us a report as to how it worked out for you!

I'm off to think of a theme for my evenings viewing now.

Watched a double bill last night of two recent purchases that i'd previously not seen.

Galaxy of Terror & Evil Aliens.

i suppose u could say the link is aliens, though thats a little weak but hey ho.

Thought both were pretty enjoyable although neither were classics in my opinion.

Galaxy's story was pretty haphazard and had some interesting actors in that were not used to their fullest, but in a cheesy 80's way was very entertaining and thought some of the design work was interesting.
The alien attacks were entertaining, people mention the maggot attack alot but my favorite was the demise of the actress from tv's Happy Days(but this was probably because i found her character annoying).
Thought the idea of the alien representing individual characters fears interesting but needed more development in the film. Also they totally forgot about Robert Englunds character at the end.

Evil Aliens was pretty cheap and cheerful and alot of the acting was pretty dodgy. Also it was a bit too crass for my liking, a little too adolescent.
Having said that i found it entertaining throughout and could easily forgive some of the moments that failed. Trying to be like Evil Dead and Braindead is no bad thing but it needed a few more atmospheric scenes mingled in the mix to make it more effective.
Not particularly original, more of a mix of favourite scenes and moments from other films but put together in an entertaining way.

So quite an enjoyable night in my opinion, both pretty short aswell which makes an easy bouble bill to sit through, recommended.

Can't decide which i liked more because i would probably rate both film's 3/5.

Hope that's ok for u Troggi. Previously i've given idea's for Double Bill's, all of the films i mentioned i've seen in the past and most of them i own, it's just finding the time to actually do a double.

Yayyy! Thanks for taking the time. I haven't seen either of these films and they sound like a fair night in with too much popcorn and a six pack (of the aluminium variety of course).

Voyages to Hell
I'd been getting a bit of yearning for the sea lately, I haven't even been on the Gosport Ferry for months, so I thought what films could I watch to assuage this yearning.
Ghost Ship and Event Horizon


Yeah alright, they're not both nautical, that's why I picked 'em, but they are both Voyages to Hell!

Of course I've seen both films before but quite some time ago so I decided to revisit them in a single night. "Ghost Ship" was, as I remembered, a decent story with some stand out death scenes at the beginning. I soon found myself enjoying the familiar story and anticipating sequences. All in all a good film but could have done with more "jumps" in it, we all like a good "jump," don't we? 7/10 just for the "cheesewire" at the start.

In space no one can hear you do anything because there is nothing to carry sound waves! Just thought I'd put that there to remind me that they more or less stuck to this truism and I can only recall a couple of incidents where sound is heard in the cold vacuum. I remember absolutely loving this when I first saw it. I'm older and much more jaded now so I only liked it... a lot! I can't help it if I like sci-fi and horror and when the two cross over it can be spectacular. Look at "Alien", "Species", and good old "Lifeforce". "Event Horizon" fits nicely in there as a "Gothic Horror" a haunted cathedral in space. Another enjoyable 7/10.

How did they work as a double act? Pretty well I believe. Very similar stories, salvage operation on a ship that's been to hell and is bent on going back, one on Earth the other in the outer atmosphere of Neptune (see, even a nautical symbol in space). To be fair to each film you need to watch 'em separately, they are too similar to watch together and seemed to "flow" into each other. With that in mind only4/10 for the double bubble.

Earlier our friend demonknight posted about receiving "Tremors 2, 3 & 4" And I remembered that a friend of my wife and I, Mr. Frugality, had bought a copy of "Tremors 4: The Legend Begins" for me some years ago and I hadn't gotten around to watching it! So tonight was the night! Inspiration came to me for a double bill when Lu Wan Chang, played by the beautiful actress Lydia Look, called the graboids "Earth Dragons". So tonight's Aptly Themed Double Bill is:
"Tremors 4: The Legend Begins"

And
"Dungeons & Dragons" 2000


This double bill is a winner! I don't think that I need to tell anyone here what these flicks are about so here goes on how good they are!
"Dungeons & Dragons"
I used to play D & D in a pub back in the late '70s - early '80s so the film was always going to be a winner for me. I love a bit of fantasy and D & D is as fantastic as it gets. Jeremy Irons always makes a good "Baddie", look at "The Time Machine", and this is no exception. No "shades of grey" here Irons is as black as they get!
As a standalone film 17/10 for a great evil team!
"Tremors 4: The Legend Begins"
The "Tremors" franchise got off to a brilliant start with Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward but the one character that is consistent in the films and the TV series is Gummer, Burt in all the others, Hiram in this prequell, played by Michael Gross. Okay this "straight to video" effort was never going to be as good as it's older brothers and sisters but it does make the best use of it's cast and heritage to produce a very enjoyable and watchable film.
As a standalone film 19/10 for the great Billy Drago!
As a double feature...it works for me 18/10 for my "double dragon"!
