From what you say they've stolen the angry mob from The Return of Michael Myers.

Wonder when we'll get the woman on the white horse?

It was hilarious and frustrating the way they were just randomly screaming for no reason like a panic scene in a comedy

They also stole a scene where he jumps on the roof of a car the exact same way and struggle from the original film with the nurse.

That was quite clever because it was the same character though.

I think i had more fun watching Halloween 4 The Return of Michael Myers last night than you did with Halloween Kills.

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

The best of what is now a stand alone sequel trilogy which pits Donald Pleasence's Dr Loomis against his old foe Michael Myers. Gorier than the original but not as chilling, although this is still a fine slasher film in it's own right. A good supporting cast - Ellie Cornell, Danielle Harris and Beau Starr - constantly give the viewer someone to root for.

Cat People (1942)

The first of producer extraordinaire Val Lewton's 1940's horror films which veered away from the monsters and creatures of Universal and subjected the viewer to the powers of suggestion and the terror of what might happen, with the fabulous Simone Simon a sensual accomplice to our fears all playing out against a chilling backdrop of light and shadow.

This is wonderfully directed by the great Jacques Tourneur.

Cry Of The Banshee. 1970.

In 1500 England a cruel magistrate who tortures innocent villagers for his pleasures runs foul of a witch.

Vincent Price stars as another witch hunter although here he doesn't believe in witches and seems to have a fetish for his torturing methods and again excels in his role as the tyrant. I have a vague memory of seeing this back in the early 90s and can't remember much about it and seeing it now this has a chilling and sinister atmosphere around it, perfect cinematography and well acted. The sets and costumes are well crafted and made to look like a medieval time period that makes it feel authentic.

The Blancheville Monster. 1963.

A daughter of a crazed count believes she will fall victim to a family curse of being sacrificed.

To be honest this film doesn't rely on the scare tactics that usually come with horror from Ital, if I said you would be scared then I probably would be hunted down. This relies on the dark Gothic atmosphere surrounding the castle and a dark family secret. Yeah I did feel the pace was a bit of a slow burner but did pay off for the finale, this is one I definitely need to be in the mood to watch again.

Flight Of The Living dead. 2007.

A scientist transferring a dead body on a plane to Paris is re-animated and a zombie outbreak happens.

Technically this film sounded crap and may look like a comedy and really shouldn't work but it does, there is some tongue in cheek humour and no holds barred anything can and does happen. There are a few known stars from Eric Avari, Dale Midkiff, Kevin J. O'Connor and Raymond J. Barry. The special make-up effects are spot on that would make Fulci proud. Entertaining.

I thought the same thing, I didn't really notice until the end of the film when she was looking out of the window and I was thinking why the f does her jumper have Christmas trees on it!

@Frankie - You should really try and see Don't Let Them In. I bet it's so down your street your bins are outside.

Same goes for the wonderfully original Hellions.

Thanks for the heads-up re 'Don't Let Them In', think I'll give it a whirl.

Already a big fan of 'Hellions'.

I'm always moaning about this, but I can find far fewer good, weird indie / microbudget horror films out there these days, whereas ten years ago there seemed to be a glut of that kind of thing. I suppose streaming has a lot to answer for - maybe all the stuff that would have been there on DVD back in the day is tucked away on Prime or some place I can't be bothered to explore fully. It could also be that the explosion of found footage stuff and emulation of 'jump scare' approaches that worked in the mainstream have turned a lot of indie to drivel. Looking at my shelf, three quarters of it is plush 70s/80s/90s blu ray re-releases - nice, but a bit sad considering reviewing new obscure stuff used to be my mainstay. So, to cut a long story short, yeah any recommendations along the lines of the films you mentioned are always welcome.

A few low budget goodies i've enjoyed in the last 18 months have been (Some of these i listed elsewhere the other day)

The Reckoning
A Werewolf in England
The Owners
The Village in the Woods
Island Zero
Crone Wood
Prey
(If you like the films of Dick Maas)
Echoes of Fear (More a mystery than a horror)
Darlin'
The Boy (Although this is quite old, i only saw it recently)
Deep Blue Sea 3 (If you enjoy trashy shark films that aren't as OTT as the Sharknado ones)
The Ringmaster (A nice throwback to the days of torture porn)

And i've picked up The Ghosts of Borley Rectory and The 100 Candles Game from Asda this last two weeks as blind buys.

I have this as a decent print on American dvd as Edgar Allan Poe's Haunted. I really like it. There's a beautifully done night time walk by Ombretta Colli which is deliciously Gothic in atmosphere.

A group of people head to the woods to maybe find themselves or escape the real world or whatever im not quite sure. One by one they start to get picked off someone or something lurking in the trees.

This starts off the usual way a group of self entitled city folk show up in a small town laughing at their way of life and expect nothing bad to happen. They are warned to stay on the path but venture off it anyway and get lost surprise surprise. At the start i was getting a good feeling about this but as time went on that slipped away rapidly as it gets progressively worse and worse. I get they wanted to try something different for the reboot but it didn't work at all. The ending was bloody atrocious. One plus side was there was some decent practical effects.

3/10

Bring back the incest cannibal rednecks.

It's a nice transfer. I haven't compared the two but i enjoyed watching the film again in HD.

It's Criterion though so the booklet and case art and layouts are crap. There are some good extras including the Lewton doc which is in the dvd box set.

I love the film but the disc in the boxset is already a cracking av presentation. It's not one I'm sure warrants upgrading.

Two years ago i had an issue with one disc in the set. For absolutely no reason whatsoever I Walked With a Zombie simply wouldn't play. The Body Snatcher was fine though.

I was fortunate enough to get a replacement from Music Magpie straight away for £6 but they are as rare as hens teeth nowadays. So what i'm saying is i want to upgrade as many as possible as i really don't want this issue to happen again.

Daveboy had exactly the same thing happen to him at the same time. I remember it well.

A building site in London is forced to close after two workers uncover an ancient grave site and unleash a horde of zombies. Meanwhile two brothers hatch a plan to rob a bank to save the old folks home their hard as nails granddad lives in. While they are getting prepared to blast their way out of the bank after the fuzz show up the zombie apocalypse has kicked into full swing giving the group a chance to just stroll out of their cash in hand. Now they must fight their way through the horde to save their grandad and his mates before they are overrun.

Straight to the point this is fun as f***. The zombies look brilliant there are a few of them that really didn't get i to character and looked rather bored walking down the street not quite knowing what they should be doing but that added to how funny it was. The gore and make up effect are all top of the range one of my favorites was when one guy was having his arm chewed on and the zombie gets blown away but his face was left clinging on to the arm and the football hooligans really got me too .

Alan Ford is always a joy to watch still looks like he would beat seven shades of sh!t out of you  Eric in the wheelchair was hilarious trying to be more cockney than anyone else making up his own cockney slang that's so complicated the mind boggles .

The Lair of the White Worm (1988)

Ken Russell's classic piece of Wyrd England, Derbyshire in this case, is a brilliant example of kinky horror. Based on Bram Stoker's story this is a fun ride as Amanda Donohoe's sexy snake woman seduces all she meets - from boy scout to policeman to Peter Capaldi's archaeologist.

Taking in mythology and folklore not to mention monstrous white worms and Hugh Grant too, the whole thing is one of a rare breed of wholly original bonkers horror films and i love it.

Nice to see Grant and i share the similar fantasies. And i don't mean Liz Hurley in a pinned together black dress or blowjobs in the back of a car in LA.

Or maybe i do.

I also partly watched Hammer's Doctor Jekyll and Sister Hyde but i nodded off half way through so that doesn't count.

Wer. 2013.

A family on holiday in France are attacked by what appears to be a animal that reaches 2 meters tall, the police arrest a local man Talon Gwynek. His defense attorney believes there is more and starts to uncover more about her client and the police.

I don't think I gave this much credit from the last time watching this, I think we have our favorite werewolf movies, from AAWIL, The Howling, Wolfen, The Wolf Man etc. This should get recognized a bit more, the acting in it is brilliant the way it becomes like a mystery thriller then balls out horror. There is is some good visual effects and good explanation on how people can be affected by a rare illness, switching from POV to normal does add a good deal of tension to it. Certainly worth watching.

Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker. 1981.

Billy raised by his aunt since he was young, now a teenager she has a domineering side to her and wants to have Billy all to herself even if it means killing those around them.

I have heard of this film and never really managed to see it, now that I have this is one F@@ked up movie, Susan Tyrell plays the happy aunt who seems to have incestuous thoughts to Billy even walking in while he is in the shower and caring for him that can make some uncomfortable.

Bo Svenson plays the detective trying to pin a murder on Billy who he thinks is gay, today this may seem mild but probably back then it was a big thing, but the hatred is well shown that anyone would want to knock his teeth out. I would say this was a bit different that what I have seen and probably would watch again.

Witchboard. 1986.

At a house party, a young girl is taught how to use a Ouija board, she begins to use it on her own and unleashes something evil that begins to target her.

Low budget 80s film with Tawny Kitean as the lead Linda who thinks she is speaking to a friendly ghost that turns out to be someone who was evil in life. The plot seems very thin and some things may drag on but still entertaining even though the jump scares may be predictable and there is some tongue in cheek humour added in, still it's one of those films I watch every year.

Witchboard 2. 1993.

A young woman moves into a new apartment and starts to receive messages through a Ouija board that belonged to the old tenant who was murdered.

This isn't a original plot, pretty young thing moving into a new place and something is very off with it and a creepy couple who are the landlords. This is not as good as the first film it seems to lack any suspense or tension, the acting isn't really that great. Was Kevin Tenney told just to make a thriller and add in something that can make it seem like a horror??

Zombie Flesh Eaters. 1988.

When terrorists steal a chemical created by the Military and becomes infected, his body is burned and contaminates the atmosphere on a island.

Lucio Fulci strikes again the Zombi genre and going into a different direction, with the first it was mentioned with Voodoo, now he decides to go with chemical warfare and a not so bright army general who doesn't listen to the good doctor who created the chemical. Claudio Fragasso who co-wrote this and Bruno Mattei took over the directing due to Lucio having health issues. Fulci's gore (hopefully he directed those scenes) is still masterful, plot may be all over the place but still enjoyable, even with the flying head out of the fridge.
