Idle Hands (1999)

I started watching this film at around half eleven last night. So Sept 30th. It had been many years since i'd last watched it and had pretty much forgotten all about it. I was then delighted to find out that this horror comedy is actually set around Halloween. Anyway...

Pretty much The Beast With Five Fingers but given a Scream style update as a delightful comedy slasher film. The film casts a knowing eye on genre cliches and works them into some classy popcorn fun.

There are enough scares and very funny moments orchestrated through great chemistry by the three leads (Devon Sawa, Seth Green and Elden Hensen) to keep even the most jaded horror fan entertained. Added to that the film sports a terrific metal soundtrack including The Offspring performing Ramones covers at the high school dance, making it the perfect way to get Halloween off to a cracking start.

Harpoon: Reykjavik Whale Watching Masacre 2009.
(Iceland).

A group of whale watchers ship breaks down and are rescued by another vessel and then the horror begins for everyone.

This was a mix of horror and black humour, Gunner Hansen (he played a guy with a love for a chainsaw in some 70s film) is the only recognisable name in this film. It does have it's moments of horror and gore but not a great story line it seems random wether it's a comedy/thriller or full blown horror. Probably a open mind is needed not one that I can watch over and over again.

Up next Martyrs 2008.

Martyrs 2008 (France).

Lucie who was kidnapped 15 years previous seeks revenge on those who kidnapped and tormented her. Anna, her childhood friend experiences something more horrific.

This film doesn't get any better with viewing, the French do not hold back any punches with this one, Morjana Alaoui who plays Anna gives out a great performance, the film does give out scenes of shock and can be disturbing. It's not bloodfest gore but does have it's moments towards the climax of the film as it is tough to watch to the end.

Okay, here we go.
As said before my posts will be rather hit and run efforts.

1. THE GHOST TRAIN (1941)
Arthur Askey and a group of passengers gets stranded at an isolated railway station. Funny and atmospheric comedy.

2. DRACULA (1931)
Classic Universal Horror and the first sound version of the novel.
Atmospheric and enhanced by having no music score apart from the main titles.

3. THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1957)
Fantastic Hammer version of the novel which put the studio on the map.
The first colour Frankenstein film.

4. THE LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE (1974)
Good zombie horror in which the dead are brought back to life by radiation caused by agricultural experimentation. Main guy Ray Lovelock and his loud mouth attitude becomes grating. Good creepy windy locations.

The Skull (1965)

Two horror heavyweights join forces yet again in this creepy yarn about the skull of the Marquis de Sade which bestows unwanted homicidal urges upon it's owner!

Cushing and Lee are as ever, a joy to watch in this film. With some really great set pieces here and genuinely creepy moments it's recommended.

The Haunting. It has been so long since i saw this, that bar a couple of scenes i had forgotten most of it. Atmospheric horror set in Hill House which has seen tragedy since the first brick was laid, an athropologist brings a couple of 'sensitives' to the house and an heir to the property tags along to keep an eye on things. It's not too long before things literally go bang in the night. The film truly belongs to the two ladies - you can feel the tension in Julie Harris's performance from the first frame and she ratchets it up throughout, and Claire Bloom's quite overtly jealous lesbian pre-dates the kind of bitchy banter that became so popular in late 90s and noughties horror films. I must admit that i forgot about the camera work and sound editing of this film and on watching last night i could see where Sam Raimi got some of his ideas from. Indeed, a scene in Evil Dead II seems to be ripped almost totally from this film. 8/10
