Obviously our interpretation of what a giallo consists of is a bit different. It might not be correct but I classify most Italian murder mysteries under the giallo umbrella. If you don't, that's fine too.

[22] Dead Of Night
A very common problem with anthology films, I find, is a wraparound section that feels more like a plot device to deliver the other segments, rather than a cohesive foundation. Dead Of Night is a master class. A gripping wraparound narrative escorts us through a variety of tales, gradually building up dread, with one perfectly timed dose of comic relief before delivering the most chilling. The main character’s nightmarish traversal through all of the stories towards the end is a particular highlight.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...ps27100457.jpg
[23] Night Of The Comet
Night Of The Comet is one of those movies that are unmistakably a product of their time. Stuffed with kitsch 80s charm, big hair, bold colours, a soundtrack evocative of the period and attitude in spades, Night Of The Comet is gloriously fun. But underneath the gaudiness there is some striking cinematography, desolate landscapes filled with warm block colours that provide a backdrop to a post apocalyptic thematic that is hugely oversaturated at present, 30 years later.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...psd0191605.jpg
[24] The Babadook
There seems to be a really poor line up of horror films theatrically this Halloween season, and The Babadook is pulling in rave reviews, so it seemed like the perfect choice. It’s superbly acted, rarely do actors display such contorted terror convincingly, the storybook elements are suitably creepy and it’s maturely executed with a lot of heart. But I found myself a little bored at times. It lacks bite; the most memorable scene features a vibrator rather than anything genuinely horrific.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...ps46d1df3c.png
[25] Creepshow
Creepshow is a love letter to horror comic books from the 1950s helmed by two legends of horror in their respective fields, Stephen King and George A. Romero. Delivered in a stylistically original and inventive way at the same time paying homage to the comic books, Creepshow is comfortably more enjoyable than any of the recurring spate of modern blockbuster comic book movies. A devilishly black sense of humour permeates in this riotously fun anthology of tales.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1e3d8539.jpg
[26] Robin Redbreast
I picked this up on DVD recently, and couldn’t wait to watch it. Originally shot in colour this made for TV movie sadly now only exists in its current black and white state thanks to cost cutting measures by the BBC. It’s very typical of a lot of British rural horror movies, isolation and alienation are the pervading themes with a cult folklore underpinning, but interestingly this was ahead of the curve being released in 1970. The close-knit sinister inhabitants of the town are a high point and the attitudes to contraception during the period hugely interesting.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

I watched two last night, but haven't had a chance to write about them yet. So watching three tonight I should hit the target. Sleep has been catching up with me from my London trip though, I strugged through the second movie last night. Hopefully I'm all refreshed today. If not the sugary soft drinks, chocolate and pizza will likely aid in keeping me awake.

Enjoying the posts Baka.

I only saw Dead of night for the first time last Christmas Eve and i was a little disappointed with it. However something stuck with me and i've seen it twice since, getting better with each viewing and i can definitely appreciate it's classic status.

Is that the rock star film or did you mean the excellent Trick r' Treat?, which i shall be watching along with Wrong Turn 5 - the only new Halloween themed film i've bought this year, so i'm looking forward to seeing it even though i'm not really expecting too much.

BAKA 31st October 2014 01:15 PM

Yeah, the 1986 horror comedy with Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne. I watched Trick 'r Treat last year, so I'm giving that a break. I watch it fairly often, can't wait for the sequel. I've never seen Trick Or Treats (1982) and likely never will considering it's a Code Red title. :axekiller:

I can't for the life of me remember whether I've seen Wrong Turn 5 or not. I recall enjoying 4.

[27] Halloween
There isn’t a lot you can say about Halloween that hasn’t been said before, many a time. I think it’s often forgotten how light Halloween is, in terms of plot. It’s been posthumously bogged down in lore by a variety of poor sequels. It’s primarily style and razor sharp execution, Myers having a hype machine in the form of Dr. Loomis, rather than an articulated back-story to convey motive. It’s the perfect movie to watch at Halloween, it’s become intertwined culturally with the season, synonymous with it.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...psb75012df.png
[28] Halloween II
Halloween II is where they started to flesh out Michael Myers, to provide motive to method. It sadly has a negative effect on the original, the unnerving random acts of violence thematic gone. But by closely following the formula (apparently due to some post production tinkering from Carpenter to Rosenthal’s film) and by directly following on from the events of the original it manages to lumber closer to the original than any subsequent entry would.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...ps29c2faa0.png
[29] Halloween H20
Halloween H20 has such a bad reputation at present, which is bewildering to me. It was very well received on release, deftly took the Halloween mould and infused it with a self-awareness that aided in revitalising the subgenre thanks to films such as Scream. It’s respectful of the characters and lore of the series, laced with references aimed at subgenre fans, filled with heart and maturity so far beyond anything prior entries could muster. Tapping Steve Miner to direct was a stroke of genius. There’s a gaping Donald Pleasence sized hole, but there isn’t a hell of a lot that can be done there.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...ps05de0911.png
[30] Trick Or Treat
Trick Or Treat is a guilty pleasure. It has a silly premise; a social outcast receives messages from a dead rocker he idolised by playing one of his unreleased records backwards, which brings the dead rocker back to life to wreak havoc. It’s another of those 80s films which overused the smoke machine, had an overabundance of glowing electric effects, and is riotously enjoyable, often for the wrong reasons, but endearingly so. It features a fantastic soundtrack and some scene stealing cameos, particularly Ozzy Osbourne, with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...psb08eed55.jpg
[31] Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker
Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker is another of those films whose social values make for curious viewing to a modern audience. The homophobic traits a couple of characters display (most notably Bo Svenson’s Detective Carlson) are a little shocking, particularly the occasional slur, but it draws to a close with a conclusion morally ahead of its time. Susan Tyrrell’s completely over the top, unhinged performance fuses everything together. Boiling over with sexual deviancy, it’s likely tamer in terms of gore than a lot of people remember. The print on the recent Code Red DVD release is revelatory compared to prior VHS releases and bootlegs.
:pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin::pumpkin:

It's been a great Halloween. Managed to hit my target, and been treated to a variety of fantastic films. My highlights, in watched order: Don't Go To The Reunion, The Night Of The Hunter, Death By Invitation, Spirits Of The Dead, Night Of The Creeps, Dead Of Night, Robin Redbreast, my personal trilogy of Halloween (Halloween, Halloween II, Halloween H20; none of the other sequels exist), Trick Or Treat and Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker. A couple of discoveries, a few I haven't seen for such a long time, but most gems I revisit time and time again. Hope you all had a wondeful Halloween. Until next year! :broomstick:

There's been a little whisper here and there of that 'H' word we all know and love and as I've just dutily filled my Lovefilm rental queue full of 'high priority' horror goodness I was wondering whether anyone else was looking at doing any horror-related viewing this coming Halloween season. :pumpkin:

I'm sure i will be doing as i always do. Watch the majority of the Halloween series in the run up along with things like Satan's Little Helper, Trick r' Treat and such like. As well as one or two choice Hammer and Universal treats. My actual Halloween movie for this year arrived today - Trick or Treat. A film i haven't seen in at least 20 years.

Sounds good. :nod:

I usually like watching the original Halloween and Trick 'r Treat around the spooky day itself, although don't generally adhere to a strict film diet during the season too much.

I have quite a few titles added to my rental list though (some of them recommendations, others films I thought sounded good and others I haven't seen in a while and maybe want to revisit), plus some purchases I've been holding back for the season too.

As you know I watched Satan's Little Helper earlier on in the year and really enjoyed it so I can see that becoming a Halloween staple in years to come. :devilbanana:

I haven't seen it myself (I do want to check it out), but Tales of Halloween, an anthology style film from a few noticeable horror names (including Darren Lynn Bousman, Neil Marshall and Lucky McKee) sounds like it could be interesting.

Tales of Halloween (2015)

Quote:

Ten stories are woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only to terrorize unsuspecting residents.
It sounds a little like Trick 'r Treat - which can't be a bad thing.

IMDb: Tales of Halloween (2015) - IMDb

Murder Party is one I rate quite highly... although it's arguably more of a dark comedy than a straight-up horror film but still contains elements.

Murder Party (2007)

Quote:

A random invitation to a Halloween party leads a man into the hands of a rogue collective intent on murdering him for the sake of their art, sparking a bloodbath of mishap, mayhem and hilarity.
There's also Lesson of Evil, which would certainly fit the Halloween template, however I know you're not a massive fan of Asian horror... not that it's really straight-up horror either. I watched it for the first time last Halloween and really enjoyed it - it has a manically gleeful edge to it and I couldn't not mention it.

Lesson of Evil (2012)

Prince_Vajda 8th September 2015 08:56 PM

It's a rather predictable choice, but on Halloween night I normally watch the original 1978 Carpenter film. If I am in the right mood, I might even add the sequel and watch it back to back.

Having said that, Halloween as a festive day is nothing to me. Apart from the aforementioned habit, I do not celebrate the event. However, I really like it when people have 'rituals' (like watching specific films at a specific time). I guess they distract from life's trials and tribulations and cheer people up.

I try and force it and every year end up disappointed. To me, Halloween should be as prolonged and unnecessary as Christmas, however everyone around me are a miserable bunch of assholes so no-one's interested in watching horror films, dressing up or having/going to parties. I'm going to try and host a party at mine next year, but will probably end up dressed up in copious amounts of make-up pigging out on treats watching films alone in the dark by the glow of my pumpkin sobbing under my black, spookily decorated Halloween tree*

*pending purchase.

I very much enjoyed Murder Party. One of the few modern horrors I've liked, actually they do tend to sway on the dark comedy side.

It works to a point - if something's just been been released and/or mega popular then it generally doesn't. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person renting some of these discs from them so they've got plenty to spare!

Yeah just had a look October 16th it goes on wide release Stateside. The problem is if it does well we won't get to see it so i bet it gets a cinema release here in 2016.

If it doesn't do well they'll just shove it onto dvd for us next year like you say.
