'Happy Birthday To Me' (1981)

As she recovers from a highly traumatic event that took place around the time of her birthday when she was a young child - no one came to the poor dear's party and her drunk mother drove the car off a bridge, killing herself and damaging Virginia's brain - Virginia (Melissa Sue Anderson) appears to be making some real progress. But as she approaches her 18th birthday, wouldn't you just know that there's gonna be a black-leather-gloved killer on the loose, killing all her private-school chums - well, 6 of them at least - which brings her mental stability into question

Gosh, this film was slow. Included as a Section 3 title during the nasties panic, I was expecting a glorious little slasher, but it was not to be. Touted as containing "6 of the most bizarre murders you will ever see", the ball is fumbled straight away with two of the 'bizarre' murders being given away in the trailer and a third on the films poster! What were the other three? I honestly can't remember what they were!

Add a truly unbelievable twist ending into the mix, and you are left with a very disappointing start to my Shocktober film marathon

Rewatch value: Unlikely

The Collector (2009)

An ex-burglar is forced to rob an employers house, only to find that a psychopath has taken over and booby trapped the shit out of the place.
As soon as I saw on the trailer people who worked on the later Saw sequels, I had a feeling of dread that it would just be torture porn level of garbage, I did watch it a few years ago but I do not remember a lot of it to be honest. There is a big reliance on the saw-esque traps (the bear trap room is just ridiculous), but the killer himself does at times come across as creepy. I felt bad for the cat though.

Macabre. 1980.

A woman traumatised by the death of her lover, moves into a boarding house, owned by a blind man who believes she is continuing her affair with the deceased.

I will hold my hands up, when i first saw this i wasn't to fondly of it but after a second viewing it got better and now a firm favourite of mine from Lamberto Bava. Bernice Stegers (Xtro) plays the young woman who moves into the boarding house where her and the lover meet. Stegers performance is amazing as she seems to develop split personality one being a traumatised woman and the other a sex maniac, give her credit she does have a great figure.

Stanko Molnar (A Blade in the dark) plays the landlord/owner Robert who plays the curious blind man and hears the echoes of satisfaction and tries to find out who her visitor is and what secrets she keeps in a locked compartment of the freezer. Based on a true story makes this film more curious as to little info about the backstory wasn't really released much, nice little chiller to watch.

30 Days OF Unseen Horror Day 1

MV5BNDU4ZTMxOTMtYTI4ZS00NTQ0LWEwZTEtMTdlZGI0ZTliYWNhXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTk5MjAyMjM@._V1_.jpg

Two brothers run into some trouble in a small southern town while on vacation when a group of local rednecks take an instant disliking to these city boys. The brothers are forced to take up lodgings for the night after their car is run off the road and they later get into a bar brawl with the same gang. After Mike one of the brothers goes missing in the night Josh is left to solve the mystery with the help of a local female teacher. This town has something strange going on under its sleepy surface and soon Josh will discover that rednecks are the least of his worries.

Just from the poster and the name of the film i was expecting a sci fi monster film but instead i was treated to a very enjoyable zombie flick with a bit of a difference where the zombies only some out at night because they can't handle the light. For most of the cast the performances are good and fairly convincing. The zombies themselves while not fast they are also not slow bumping into things and wandering around aimlessly they move about with purpose. The makeup is decent pale faced with open sores and the palms of their hands oozing the toxic waste that turned them from humans into the undead. The toxic blood is used to great effect and purpose in many scenes. Mutant offers up some great action scenes a lot of suspense and a few touching scenes also.

I really enjoyed this and was totally taken by surprise at the start i was a little skeptical when the Redneck gang showed up first their acting was stupid and the way it seemed to be going worried me but that soon passed and things instantly started to improve. Day one and we are off to a great start a real hidden gem that i will watch again.

8/10
