Great collection of stories from Amicus. All held together by the mysterious Dr Schreck and his 'House Of Horrors' tarot deck.
Not seen this in a long time so this is a good time to revisit. :skull:

'Wrestlemaniac' (2006)

When driving through the desert to the city of Cabo San Lucas in Mexico to shoot a lesbian porn film, an amateur film director with his cast and crew manage to get lost. Asking for directions at a dilapidated petrol station, old crazy Ralph tells them to 'stay on the path and keep off the moors' and to avoid a ghost town named 'La Sangre de Dios' [the blood of God] which, legend has it, is home to an insane Mexican Lucha Libre wrestler known as 'El Mascarado' [The Masked Man]

Of course they find the town; Of course they decide to make their film there; Of course the luchador is more than a legend...

If I was 15 years old, the lure of both horror and wrestling would have been enough to drag me into this film. Sadly I am not 15, but then again there is very little horror in the film, and even less wrestling. What there is, however, is close-up after close-up after close-up of a scantily clad female botty!

There are some entertaining hybrid horror / wrestling films out there, such as 'Monster Brawl' and 'Pro Wrestlers Vs. Zombies', but 'Wrestlemaniac' is very much bottom of the barrel

As a piece of trivia, the title character is played by legendary Mexican wrestler Rey Misterio, who is the uncle of WWE wrestler Rey Mysterio

I enjoyed that one, I think I watched it last October! It's still in the collection.

Ha ha, very true Susan although I actually quite enjoyed 'Wrestlemaniac', despite it being indisputably daft and probably a bit feeble.

Well folks, onwards and downwards into this afternoon's delve inside my magical cupboard. Note - it's only magical if your idea of magic is a load of random DVDs that haven't been played in years interspersed with things too encrusted with time's foul passing to ever even contemplate. Honestly, moving is a right hassle, all the junk. I should be on a channel four, or more likely five, program with all the shite I have piled around me. These COVID era face masks are proving quite useful.

It did feel a bit weird watching this just after midday, but anyway -

DEVIL STORY – This oddity from mid-eighties France baffles on an ‘Ogroff’-worrying level. It’s hard to pinpoint what it’s about or even what happens, but I can tell you that there’s a guy in a monster mask, some dead campers, a murky chateau in the rain and a mummy that comes out of the ship buried in the side of a mountain. Yeah, the ship buried in the side of a mountain; ‘Just like that,’ as dear old Tommy Cooper used to say. Most of it, though, seems to concern an irate elderly guy’s attempts to shoot a horse in the French countryside. We see a lot of that. We see him loading and firing that shotgun so many times that it almost becomes a movie within a movie, and a scarily infinite one at that. And the horse, the horse gets a lot of screen-time, constantly whinnying. It must have done something really bad. ‘The Devil’s Story’ is probably a bit like what happens behind the fluttering eyelids of a sleepwalker. Its characters wander in a landscape bereft of meaning, their actions reduced to something that approaches physical comedy minus the comedy. If Becket had been a youngish horror nerd in mid-eighties France, doubtless ‘Devil Story’ would have been his gift to the world in lieu of ‘Waiting for Godot’. Mmm, speaking of, Hallowe’en seems quite a way off, somehow.

I love Wrestlemaniac. I thought it was pretty gory when he starts ripping faces off.

Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

It's clear i enjoy this movie more than most because i always seem to kick off October / Halloween Fest with it.

Yes it's flawed but it's obvious now that i really don't care and still have a lot of fun with it.

One thing i did notice last night was Michael's first kill when he returns to the Myers house. It's taken direct from Michael Powell's Peeping Tom as Michael picks up a movie camera on a tripod and we get the same first person camera work as the 1960 classic as Michael moves in on his prey before plunging the tripod through the victim's throat.

Looks like that full moon last night influenced me after all.

Late Phases (2014)

I'm always surprised at how good Late Phases actually is. It's premise of a werewolf attacking the residents of a senior citizens village, i have to admit, doesn't sound exactly exciting. However a sharp script held together by a superb performance from Nick Damici as retired army veteran Ambrose McKinley really engages my full attention.

Added to the fact that McKinley is also blind and you have an almost impossible situation. How can a blind old man defeat a werewolf?

Late Phases is one of the best werewolf movies from recent years and boasts excellent creature effects, a credible story and enough intrigue, humour, action and excitement to keep even the most jaded horror fan gripped.

Yep! The Lewton double movies. Body Snatcher and Zombie.

Ready or Not
A girl marries into a rich family that make their fortune through board games, etc. On the night of the wedding it is tradition to pick a random card with a game printed on it. You don't want to draw hide and seek! She thinks it's a regular game of hide and seek but the family must kill her by dawn or something bad will happen. The hunt begins!

Really enjoyed this one, missed it in cinemas. Some great death scenes, tension and satisfaction as she takes out the snobby aristocratic characters.

Something Wicked This Way Comes. 1983.

In a small American town, a carnival arrives and begins to prey on it's townsfolk by granting wishes that have a sinister twist.

Based on the book by Ray Bradbury and produced by Walt Disney productions(no you didn't read that wrong), Jack Clayton brings the imagination to screen. This does have it's dark moments, from Johnathan Pryce, proprietor of Dark's pandemonium carnival who can be quite scary at times and never know what he is planning. Jason Robards plays the town librarian and father to one of the boys and tries to put a stop the dark forces and Pam Grier as the spider woman. Vidal Peterson and Shawn Carson play Will and Jim the two friends who get caught up with Mr Dark. Even though this was a PG rated film this actually scared me when I was younger and re-watching it years later still has it's moments to make you jump :lol: There is a decent narration from Arthur Hill who does a introduction to the town and as the adult Will.
