I had planned to watch the entire Saw franchise this October, I've only seen the first 2, but I don't have the time now without sacrificing all of the other (and potentially better) films I have lined up.

Saw V. 2009

With Hoffman hailed a hero for escaping the game, Agent Straum decides to steal files on everyone who has played Jigsaw's game and tries to make a connection while five people start a new game.

I remember seeing this one in the cinema and a few people clinging to each other and their seats and a few choice of swear words coming out of their mouths. This one is better the four, as we know who is the accomplice and how its paced out it is and more flashbacks are shown, one or two of the games may seem a bit sadistic and tense and as Jigsaw once said "There will be blood" this goes beyond just showing blood. The game players are great as they seem to be strangers and can easily turn on each other to survive.

Saw VI. 2009

Hoffman and the F.B.I are working together both keeping secrets from each other, Insurance Exec is tested with a formula he has developed on who should benefit and who shouldn't in a game designed by Jigsaw.

This one seems different, it doesn't tie in with any other of the previous films it's like the makers just went lets do something new with a one person player and torture this guy in different ways and cause him excruciating pain we can inflict on a human body. There is one or two good traps and who ever makes them up is a genius or a sadistic wacko who lives on the rule of horror...The innocent must suffer. Betsy Russell from Saw 4 and 5 returns with a more major role in her character along with Costas Mandylor and some more flashbacks with Tobin Bell.

Saw 3D. 2010.

A self help group of survivors aided by another survivor of the game may find himself in another game for a different reason. The accomplice of Jigsaw is playing mind games with one reason and goes to great lengths to get Jill Tuck.

I have mixed feelings about this one, Carey Elwes returns as Dr. Gordon who seems a bit unbalanced, not because he cut his foot off in the first but more mental state and we uncover why. Doing these back to back they have been entertaining and can see a somewhat of a connection with previous instalments but doesn't seem to be played out well or lack of explanation and a bit more of a body count and more blood, this seems to lack the tension or suspense.

976-EVIL (1988)

A tedious eighties horror from director Robert Englund about a creepy fortune telling phone line that is actually used by Satan to corrupt mortals into doing nefarious deeds. Mortals such as Hoax, a teen who goes through life being picked on by his so called friends. Thanks to Satan's power Hoax can now exact revenge on all those who wronged him.

I suppose it's preferable to invoking the demon Pumpkinhead to kill everyone but only slightly.

Anyway, the long and short of it is is that 976-EVIL is so eighties it practically hurts. The firsy half is fairly slow moving high school hi-jinks but things do improve in a climax of great eighties day-glo FX in that Poltergeist manner and cool make up but it's just not scary at all nor is their any tension or that much excitement.

I took it to CEX this lunchtime as they gave me £11 cash for it which is a whole penny more than i paid for it in the Eureka sale last Thursday. That's £11 extra to spend in the upcoming Powerhouse sale. :woot:

Halloween II (1981)

Seeing as i now have Halloween III to watch on Blu-ray thanks to Justin i thought i'd watch that on Halloween instead of this sequel in a break from tradition. So dug out the dvd again with the commentary by Kim Newman and Stephen Jones.

You can tell it's going to be a fun listen when Newman introduces himself as "Author, critic and general know it all".

A highly listenable commentary that i really recommend. As far as i'm aware it's only available on the early Sanctuary UK dvd which if anyone's interested is currently being sold at Asda for £3 (A 2011 Scanbox reissue). It's worth picking up purely for the commentary.

I did too. It wasn't 'enough' really in any department when you put it up against the likes of Fright Night, Return of the Living Dead and so on.

It's basically nearly the same as the first , differences are its set in a fancy apartment block and demons come through tv, instead of being in a cinema we still even have a gang cruising around.

Not as good as the original and doesn't seem quite as violent but still some great kills and like the gremlin rip off. Nearly all the same actors from the first are in this.

Tonight a Kevin Tenney double.
