hi guys, bit of a rating quirey.

what is the difference between an 18 rated film, an x rated film and a R rated film?

also, instead of banning/cutting films should there be a 25 rating?

I don't think there is a difference.

No, because 18 is an adult. We're infantilising people enough these days as it is.

R rated is people under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to cinemas

NC-17, no one under that age can see the film.

X Rated usually applies to pornographic material will be shown in the film and implies the 18 certificate

It all depends which country you come from. The ratings you mention are a mixture of US and UK.

It should be obvious what an 18 rated film is. It's a UK certificate given by the BBFC.

An X rated film is a UK film certificate given by the BBFC prior to the video recordings act. Similar to an 18 nowadays. It's nothing to do with pornographic content. That would be rated R-18.

An R-rated film is a US rating and is the same as a UK 15 rating. It also means that anyone under 17 (i think) must be accompanied by an older person.. Unrated in the US is the same as our 18 certificate,

Talking of ratings, it looks like the amendments to the labelling part of the video recordings act has been approved, as companies will be able to use the new age logos from Monday. The good news is that they can now make them smaller (some of the 88 Films ratings sizes like the one on the cover of Offerings give an idea of the size they can legally be now). Although, I bet some companies will continue to make them bigger than they need to be.
