Eyeball Violence

What is it with the crazy Italians and eyeball assault? Giallo is full of twisted ways of piercing them an Fulci defined the eyeball kill in Zombi 2, when that women got a splinter rammed into her socket. I've read somewhere that Giallo has an obsession with leering voyeurism and that the eye attack is linked to that but I think it's just that it's the universal way of creating queasiness in an audience. Everyone is scared of blindless and brain injury so shoving a blade in there really freaks everyone out...

Paul@TheOverlook 2nd October 2007 01:34 PM

I was trying to describe the eyeball scene from FLESH EATERS to a female work colleague - she put her hands over her ears and wouldn't listen :D

Jimmy 2nd October 2007 01:36 PM

Also in Lenzi's Nightmare City. A woman gets a fire-poker in the eye socket.

Sam@Cult Labs 2nd October 2007 01:38 PM

it's still a classic moment, one that always gets mentioned whenever video nasties get mentioned anywhere. I thinks it because the editing during the build up makes the believe that the film will turn away at the last moment, maybe to a shot of blood splattering on a wall or a shot of the outside of the house accompanied by a blood curdling scream, but it doesn't and the first time you see it it shocks the hell out of you

Philleh 17th October 2007 08:26 PM

Eye violation is as old as cinema :)

vincenzo 17th October 2007 09:26 PM

A pair of eyeballs get pushed outwards (via a zombie fist in the mouth) in Zombie Creeping Flesh and a decidedly plastic looking one got squished out in the wonderful Night Of The Bloody Apes.

A sweet old lady also has eyeball surgery (via acupuncture needles) in Shameless's very own Killer Nun.

Philleh 18th October 2007 01:43 PM

If I remember rightly, Zombie 4: After Death had a cool eye gouge scene towards the end? Just like the manner in which the guy is dispatched in Zombie Creeping Flesh?

vincenzo 18th October 2007 01:54 PM

Another one got hypodermically-punctured (after the poor sod had almost got burnt to a crisp) in Dead And Buried and poked out in the ridiculously fun Dawn Of The Mummy.

Philleh 18th October 2007 02:29 PM

Sergio Martino's Torso has some juicy eye violation too.

Damn, Dawn of the Mummy is ace.

bedorca 19th December 2007 08:30 PM

Don't forget the Evil Dead! Double finger attack in the first and eyeball into mouth in the 2nd. SQUISH

Philleh 20th December 2007 10:16 AM

Also in Jean Rollin's Living Dead Girl... she goes about shoving her fingers into peoples eyes! - nice.

deadhead 20th December 2007 02:31 PM

Un Chien Andalou's opening sequence of slashing an eyeball with a razor, filmed way back in 1929.

Peter Neal 15th February 2008 05:39 PM

"Halloween 2" offers a particularly nasty bit of eyeball violence, ensuring that the movie will stay baned in Germany.:D

Also some action flicks feature their share of eye attacks, for instance "Marked For Death" in which big bad Steven Seagal squeezes the baddie's eyes out:ack:

Pacino shoots a guy in the eye in "Carlito's Way".:coolblue:

Not forgetting the bullet in the eye scene from argento's opera. Amazing stuff!

On the subject of zfe and its eye violence, the first time i watched this on video,it was the cinema version(back in 1982)and of course the camera cuts away from the scene just as the splinter is about to go in her eye.
A few months later, when my cuz rented it,lo and behold, splinter in the eye.Little did i know there was the strong uncut version on the shelves as well.Needless to say,i was well impressed!;)

vincenzo 11th April 2008 09:08 PM

I first saw Zombie Flesh Eaters as a cinema double bill with the even heavier cut Toolbox Murders back in 1982. :)

Philleh 12th April 2008 10:28 AM

There's some awesome eye violence in Mother of Tears! :)

Ouch.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 12th April 2008 06:53 PM

I know it's taken a critical pounding phil, but hey,it's Argento!-I'm looking forward to seeing this.........

mark meakin 28th April 2008 10:25 AM

Cannibal Apocalypse has the sequence where a biker has his eye pushed in (like Screwface in the Steven Seagal actioner Marked For Death)and the remake of Black Christmas has some squishy eyeball violence.Fulci's The Beyond has two good examples including a woman having an eye poked out after her head is rammed onto the longest nail ever & a zombie gouges out a workman's eyeball.

Simon 29th April 2008 07:58 AM

Deranged (1974) during the brain scoop scene where Ed rips out his dead mother's eye with a spoon . This scene seems to be missing on a lot of video/DVD releases. Shocking stuff indeed!

bedorca 30th April 2008 06:02 PM

What about the eye eating in Octopussy?

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 30th April 2008 06:15 PM

Mother of tears....eyepopping violence alright........

vincenzo 1st May 2008 12:28 PM

Another one gets popped out with a knife during the torture/killing climax of Salo. http://shameless-films.com/forums/im...ilies/ack2.gif

gore64 13th May 2008 05:29 PM

Don't forget the eyeball popping/squishing from H G Lewis's The Gore Gore Girls. As a novelty, the eye is pushed back into the (very fake looking) dummy head at one point if memory serves, before being removed...

Also 3D eye-popping in Friday the 13th Part III

And Scorsese's Casino, anyone?

Pete 20th April 2009 12:48 PM

There is some eybal violence in Kill Bill vol 2.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 20th April 2009 08:44 PM

Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue.

vincenzo 20th April 2009 09:44 PM

Popped-out eyeballs can also be seen err... popping out in The Beast In The Cellar and the uncut My Bloody Valentine.

gory daz 29th April 2009 01:36 PM

And the daddy of all eyeball menace,THE HEADLESS EYES!!!
