Festive Horror Movies

With the festive season fast approaching (Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time was playing in a shop today :ack:) I am searching for some Christmassy movies to fill me with seasonal fear... I mean, cheer.

I know there's stuff out there like Black Christmas and, if I got desperate to the point of being suicidal, the Black Christmas remake, but I was just wondering if anyone could recommend any Christmas-themed exploitation films of the rather sick variety?

There's only so much Miracle On 34th Street a girl can take! :puke:

Philleh 31st October 2007 06:17 PM

Silent Night, Deadly Night 1, 2,3, 4 and 5! (although 4 and 5 lose it all completely, father christmas gets replaced!)

Chirstmas Evil

Don't Open Till Christmas

Jack Frost 1 & 2

That's all I can think of at the moment :)

Sarah@Cult Labs 31st October 2007 06:57 PM

Thanks! I seem to remember watching at least one of the Jack Frost films once upon a time. Haven't seen any of the others though. It'll give me something to watch when I get fed up of Christmas sized queues in Primark!

If anyone has anymore suggestions, keep 'em coming!

vincenzo 31st October 2007 10:59 PM

Don't Open Till Christmas is absolutely abysmal but also an absolute must. Poor old Santa takes a right pounding in this one (speared, baked in hot coals, castrated in a London toilet etc). You won't see a worse film but you also won't see a more entertaining one.
The Film 2000 DVD (extras-free alas) restores all the (heavy) BBFC cuts but is slightly re-edited and misses out a Santa being shot. No matter. Grab it anyway. :)

Silent Night, Deadly Night urgently needs a UK release. Never been submitted over here, though the sequel was rejected back in 1987.

Other seasonal delights......

Silent Night, Bloody Night - Awful print and not particularly Christmassy but not a bad film nonetheless. John Carradine had a wonderful speaking voice but in this film plays a mute.

Pranks - Vaguely set at Xmas but devoid of atmosphere. Also devoid of 10 secs of a head-drilling because Vipco were too lazy to find an uncut print. An original Video Nasty but could well qualify for a '15' now.

To All A Goodnight - David Hess directed it and I have vague memories of a decapitated head in a shower and dead bodies buried in soil. Other than that it's been about 20 years since I last saw it and the memory fades a bit.

Tales From The Crypt - Ye olde superior British horror compendium classic which includes Joan Collins being pursued by a looney Santa after she murders her husband.

I'm sure I've forgot some but that's a taste of Xmas mayhem to consider. :)

Sarah@Cult Labs 1st November 2007 07:26 AM

I saw Tales From The Crypt not long ago on TV. Loved it! There's a Region 1 copy of Silent Night, Deadly Night but it's a tenner which is more than I can afford. Think I'll have to go ebaying soon!

Thanks for all the suggestions! :D

vincenzo 1st November 2007 09:58 AM

Tales From The Crypt was recently released on a R1 DVD paired with Vault Of Horror, though the latter sadly featured the edited U.S TV print.

Crypt is fully uncut (the UK video version was the cut cinema print).

RobbieD 1st November 2007 02:37 PM

Jack Frost II is AWFUL! (And not even in a so bad it's good way.) The first one is fun. :)

herman 6th November 2007 02:12 AM

um Black Christmas maybe?

failing which maybe National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. :)

RobbieD 15th November 2007 11:58 AM

Here's a newer one which hasn't been released in the UK yet: P2, by the director of Switchblade Romance and The Hills Have Eyes remake. It takes place during Christmas Eve. A woman, on her way home, is locked in a carpark and trapped and tortured by a stalker. It's not brilliant but there's some suspenseful scenes and some nice gore. :)

Philleh 15th November 2007 02:47 PM

Tartan own the rights here, think they are aiming for a January release. Even though it all takes place on Xmas Eve! lol

Christmas Horror!

With only 15 days until ol' St. Nick comes shuffling down your chimney, it makes sense to have a thread dedicated to all things Christmas Horror!

What's your favourite horror films with a strong emphasis on Christmas? To me, horror films set on the big day often have a special unfathomable quality to them. Slighly more magic? More twisted? Whatever it is - there's definetly something different about xmas horrors.

So any favs? Black Christmas? Silent Night, Deadly Night?

I've only just found out about this film - why it hasn't been given a good DVD release over here is beyond me - it looks like fun. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Black Christmas is a fave!

Not a full movie but I love that Joan Collins christmas segment in Tales From The Crypt.

nekromantik 10th December 2010 09:24 PM

i love SNDN!!
Black xmas is also a classic.

Am looking forward to Rare Exports next week.
kyle u should go see it!

Vampix 10th December 2010 09:28 PM

Black Christmas (1974) is in my top 10, it's a classic imo.I also like the opening segment to Tales from the Crypt (1972), with a murderous Joan Collins being stalked by a deranged Santa.I've got the Arrow edition of Silent Night, Deadly Night but I'm not a big fan tbh.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 10th December 2010 10:04 PM

Not a fan of SNDN, Vampix?! :faint: How could you?! Just kidding - each to their own :) (Punish! Punish! Punish!)

Good to see BC getting a lot of luv - it really is a classic. Anyone seen the remake?

Rare Exports sounds excellent, Nekro - I'll have to check that one out - no doubt about it.

Have anybody seen any of those pretty rubbish-y xmas films, like Jack Frost - the killer snowman one?

Phats 10th December 2010 10:10 PM

I was just about to mention Jack Frost. I thought it was hilarious and have always thought the dvd cover art was brilliantly terrifying. It was a shame that the snowman never looked anywhere near as scary as on the cover, as it could have been a half decent movie. I've seen the remake of Black Christmas and it's not that good in my opinion. It lacks a lot of what made the original great.

nekromantik 10th December 2010 10:14 PM

I seen Jack Frost wen I was younger but cant remember much ha ha
might have to re-visit it.

pedromonkey 10th December 2010 11:05 PM

the remake of Black Christmas is dire, the original is fantastic, it's a shame Bob Clark went on to make Baby Geniuses 2.

If a fat jolly man with a red suit and a big white beard comes down my chimney,
i'll be waiting with Mr.45 and if he runs, well ive got six little friend that can all run a hell of a lot faster than him...(a team of dwarves with rocket shoes)

SNDN is fun but not the best film ever made, Rare Exports looks great and Dick Maas' Sint looks great fun....but what about WCW/WWF star Bill Goldberg as santa in Santa's Slay?...

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 10th December 2010 11:09 PM

 I'm sure there's a twisted innuendo in there somewhere. Santa's Sleigh has been on my wishlist for too long now - the cover alone is just great!

Looks like Jack Frost is quite popular then - I'll have to buy it - isn't there a sequel too?

it's great fun and it has Emilie De Ravin from Lost and James Caan in it too, defo recommend it Kyle....

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 10th December 2010 11:33 PM

If there's one thing I've realised about starting a new thread, it's that I'll probably end up in dept again trying to track down and buy all the films mentioned. When will I ever learn!

I'll put it on my Xmas list, Pedro.

Oh, and how can we forget Gremlins?! Hello!

nekromantik 10th December 2010 11:38 PM

ha ha

Il check it out too, killer santa flicks always fun.

I think Sint looks average, maybe it was just the trailer but might check it out.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 11th December 2010 08:06 AM

The original Black Christmas has always been a favourite of mine.

Also, if you have 20 minutes to spare, I'd urge you to check out this great Xmas horror short: Treevenge - It's absolutely brilliant! :D

Argentofan 11th December 2010 08:54 AM

I have Gremlins, Black Christmas and SNDN to watch on christmas eve this year :D

pedromonkey 11th December 2010 01:45 PM

here's the trailer for Santa's Slay....Enjoy...

Silent Night Deadly Night,Black Christmas,Don't Open 'Till Christmas and Christmas Evil are my faves.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 12th December 2010 03:48 PM

Black Christmas all the way for me -- it predates Halloween in many ways and I think the Billy character is one of the most sinister and scary killers in cinema history.

re.form 14th December 2010 09:04 PM

Santa's Slay is great fun. And so is Jack Frost. Love those two.

Well said and i'm in total agreement with you.

Billy is indeed one seriously disturbed, demented and deranged character and his vocal moments of madness are undeniably chilling and memorable.

Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder are pretty easy on the eye, too imo!;)

One of the reasons that Billy worked so well is because we know absolutely nothing about him, something they should have realised when they remade the movie. It is, like you say, an absolutely outstanding vocal performance and one that is still fairly disturbing even now.

I agree with you about Margot Kidder and Olivia Hussey, though I prefer Hussey over Kidder.

That's enough for me -- it's now on my wishlist!

Obvious choices and already mentioned a lot here but Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night for me. Had a few friends over at the weekend to watch these and they enjoyed both, especially the latter which is a great film to watch with an audience after a few drinks :)

Might watch Christmas Evil with the missus later
