Default Best Horror Films of the Decades.

I have decided that it would be cool to just run each decade at the same time, but cut down on the list sizes.

At the end of the year, 6 months away, we send in a top 25 (or less if you can't come up with 25 for some reason) for each decade

Beginning of time - 1929
1930-1939
1940-1949
1950-1959
1960-1969
1970-1979
1980-1989
1990-1999
2000-2009
2010-2013

We will be doing an update on the 1980s for this as well, as I've seen that some wanted to participate but missed out. This will also push the 70s ballot back as well.

If you make it 2000-2009 and 2010-2013 it would give some of us ideas of movies from the last couple of years that people like, rather than everyone naming films from the first ten years of the century, if that makes sense.

I haven't really explained it very well.

So you think we should split up 00-09 and 10-13? Do you think a top 25 would be too much for 10-13? Or should we go to a top 10 for 10-13?

Basically the more recommendations we get for films we don't know about from the last couple of years the better
Slippery Jack likes this.

Added to my watch list.

Pimp the hell out of some horror films, people. Universal horror films is probably my most bare area. Which are the best ones to check out?

Start with The Legacy Collections for each monster on dvd or get that eight film Blu set.

You'll still need the Legacy Collections though for all the other monster films.

Otherwise pick up any of the region 1 dvd Universal boxsets for Karloff, Lugosi etc. You won't go wrong.

I've been looking forward to the results of the '70s ballot

This sounds like an interesting idea though, and a Top 25 of any decade will (hopefully) encourage more people to submit a list.

As for recommendations, I have listed below a film from every decade that I think every horror fan should watch. It's not necessarily the best film from that decade, but an essential (and generally lesser viewed) one nonetheless!

Beginning of time - 1929 - L'Inferno (1911)
1930-1939 - Mad Love (1935)
1940-1949 - Dead of Night (1945)
1950-1959 - Dementia (1955)
1960-1969 - The Innocents (1961)
1970-1979 - Messiah of Evil (1973)
1980-1989 - Retribution (1987)
1990-1999 - The Addiction (1995)
2000-2009 - Little Otik (2000)
2010-2013 - Berberian Sound Studio (2012)

I've seen L'Inferno, The Innocents, and Berberian Sound Studio out of those. L'Inferno is a film I admire more than I enjoyed. The Innocents has been compared to The Haunting a lot, but I find it to be way better than The Haunting. Berberian Sound Studio is in the top 5 horrors of the 2010-2013 time period.

I agree with you in respect to your thoughts on the above films. L'Inferno is indeed more of an experience or visual journey, rather than a film to 'enjoy' as such. The same goes for Dementia, if you manage to check it out.

I also prefer The Innocents to The Haunting, although they are both fantastic films. Berberian Sound Studio is also one of my favourites of the current decade, and I don't see that changing.
