Oooh a Hitchcock thread.

People will witter on about 'extreme' this and 'transgressive' that. But Hitch did most of it first imho. I still see something new every time I watch one of his films.

For my money The Girl was betterer than Hitchcock.
Favourites

The Lodger
Young & Innocent
Sabotage
The 39 Steps
Shadow Of A Doubt
Strangers On A Train
NBNW
Rear Window
Vertigo
Rope
Psycho
The Birds
Marnie (late entry but sicker than Frenzy ... )
Frenzy

These are the ones I've watched the most

Harry I will no doubt watch sober finally and proclaim it to be his masterpiece. There IS a French strain in my family history after all ...

I see a clear delineation. Before Psycho he worked within the studio system restrants. After Norman, whilst proving he was right, freed him from their leash. That's why they get progressively weirder imo. Vertigo he disguised as a 'thriller' but Bergman couldn't hope to touch him. It's like a raw nerve.
I digress.

You're not digressing my good man. You're discussing Hitchcock films in a thread about Hitchcock.

Ta. Tis just me. I rant. It luckily is curtailed on the internet as I get fed up typing eventually.
A friend once said I had spoken about Lovecraft for 40 minutes straight.

I DIGRESS

Hitch was always there
Mother in the rocking chair
James Mason stares
Cary Grant ... beware!
James Stewart can't use stairs
Grace Kelly's hair
Tippi don't go up there
Anna Massey have a care

Ahem. He wanted to rape Audrey Hepburn on film. Fcuk Fred Vogel.

1958: Not a film, but...

Hitch's sleeve notes: "These days a murder is amusing for the onlookers and the murderer but no one thinks of making things pleasant for the victim. He may be a tiresome bore but he is still rather essential and is entitled to some consideration. Music, I feel, will heighten his appreciation and make his own murder the truly ennobling experience it should be."

Rear Window

This being the BD.
OOOOOOH. Oh, calm down
It's very vibrant . And as always the detail distracts (if you let it cough), but this most 'static' of thrillers is actually quite kinetic, what with the roaming camera and what not. Gripping stuff as an invalid is an unconscious witness to a murder. Or is it the man himself referring to his audience? Probably both, and more. It's just that the guys hair just looks so fake now
Kelly looks luminous. But then she would cough. Film!! If you haven't seen this, then do yourself a favour.
