Chandu the Magician

Frank Chandler has gone to India to master and perfect his magical powers of hypnosis and other mind altering techniques. Frank has kept these powers from his family when he returns home he finds his family and love interest have been kidnapped by the evil Roxor played by Lugosi. Franks brother in law Robert Regent is an inventor and his latest creation is a death ray but dont be put off by the name it obviously is a good type of death ray created with only the good of humanity in mind but Ruxor wont be fooled by good intentions and he intends on using the death ray to enslave the world and be its master. Only Frank can save his family and the world using his magical powers and so exposing himself as Chandu the Magician.

This film has it all action, adventure, comedy, great special effect and fantastic set design. From start to finish this film is fast paced with action and suspense lurking around every corner. Chandu can get inside his enemies heads and make them do what ever he wishes or make things appear that are not there like seeing double of him so he can distract them to gain entry to places he should not be. Chandu also plays tricks on his side kick who is a bit too fond of a drink so now every time he touches a drop of alcohol a small man appears to scare him off the booze. Ruxor has his own army of brain washed followers that obey his every command.

All around the acting is solid but Edmund Lowe just does not have much charisma as Chandu. The same can not be said for Lugosi who once again commands the attention of the viewer everytime he is on the screen. Lugosi is not creepy or sinister like in the films we have seen up to this point but he plays the role exactly the way you would expect a man who wants to rule the world acting, over the top and larger than life. Along with the crazed look in his eyes that he uses to great effect he also has a look of disgust on his face when dealing with his enemies he is not trying to scare or intimidate his victim he he showing them that they are nothing to him. He is not trying to win the girl he just wants to rule the world and they are all uninvited guests in a world that rightfully belongs to him and him alone.

Chandu The Magician is just pure entertainment its a fantastic Sunday afternoon film turn out the lights close the curtains and brace yourself for a good old fashioned thrill ride. Over the course of our journey we will revisit Chandu once again but next time Lugosi will take over in the title role.

Film 8/10

Island of Lost Souls

After his boat is shipwrecked Edward Parker is left alone at sea with only an upturned lifeboat to keep him afloat. Eventually Parker is picked up by a passing ship and when he wakes up he is greeted by Montgomery a doctor who has been treating him since he was taken aboard. On the advice of the doctor Parker take in some fresh air on deck where he meet the unfriendly Captain Davies a drunk whos ship is hired by Montgomery to deliver various wild life to a nameless island owned by the sinister Dr. Moreau. When relations between Parker and Captain Davis turn sour Parker is dumped over board on Dr. Moreau island. Within minutes of stepping foot on the island Parker realises that something is not quite right. The natives that greet him are strangely disfigured like nothing he has ever seen before.Parker intends to leave the island first thing the next morning but Dr. Moreau has other plans for Mr Parker.

Dr. Moreau invites Parker to his house to meet Lota a beautiful native girl who he hopes will become romantically attached to Parker. Moreau warns Parker not to leave the house but when he hears a sickening pain filled scream he rushes to investigate but nothing can prepare him for what he will find inside the house of pain. When Parker looks inside he sees Moreau experimenting on what appears to me a half human half animal. Parker runs into the forest hoping to find a way off the island but he only finds the results of Moreaus experiments creatures that are half man half beast. Parker is shocked and threaten to expose Dr. Moreau and his sick twisted work to the world once he leaves the island but leaving is easier said than done when Moreau has the only means of leaving destroyed.

Meanwhile back on the mainland Captain Davies has arrived and is confronted by Parkers fiancée Ruth who wants to know why Parker is no longer on his ship. Captain Davis is forced to give the location of the island to the port authorities after Ruth reports the incident. Desperate to find her husband to be Ruth enlists the help of Captain Donohue to take her to search for Parker. When they reach the home of Dr. Moreau they are welcomed and invited to spend the night until sun up when it is safer to make the journey back to the mainland. This is not an act of kindness this is another chance for the Dr to hatch one of his sinister plans. With the presence of fully human woman on the island the natives become restless and when one of then tries to break into Ruths room all hell breaks loose.

Captain Donohue chases him into the forest where he is ambushed and killed. When the natives realise that men can be killed they revolt against the evil Dr. Moreau and they exact their brand of justice by taking him to is very own house of pain.

The Island Of Lost Souls is a film that feels like it was way ahead of its time. The splicing of man and animal must of scared people half to death back in the 30s. Bela Lugosi has a very small role as one of the natives but as usual no matter how big or small his role is he gives it everything and he give a performance here filled with terror and rage. His eyes his face and his screams are pure pain and you can feel everything he has been through and the pain of being stuck halfway between man and beast. Where Lugosi owns the screen time he is given Charles Laughton owns this film he is outstanding as Dr. Moreau he is pure evil and has a constant sinister glint in his eye. He is a man who is constantly plotting and dreaming up new ways to satisfy his thirst to push the boundaries of science and his own. This is a must for horror fans its quite a disturbing film for the time and even now the deeper you think about it after you finish watching it.
