That down-the-stairs-to-the-lighthouse shot in The Fog? Amazing! Nicolas Roeg is another. That's why he produced such beautiful looking films as a director!

Don't know about directors,but Spielberg favourite Janusz Kaminski is another great cinematographer. Take a look at some of the shots in Schindler's List!

I'll have a think about directors who who are also cinematographers, bu but, in the meantime, I'd like to sing the praises of the Guillermo del Toro-Guillermo Navarro partnership as Navarro has shot every one of del Toro's films. He was also the DoP on Jackie Brown, From Dusk Till Dawn and Zathura: A Space Adventure.
