Default Lamberto Bava

What are people's thoughts on Bava Jr?

Personally I think he's talented and has made some very good film's but was just unfortunate to directing during a time when Italian cinema was in decline. Also, the fact that he is the son of one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived doesn't help his cause either.

My favourite Bava Jr films are:

BLASTFIGHTER
MONSTER SHARK
DEMONS
MIDNIGHT RIPPER
MACABRE
A BLADE IN THE DARK

He seems a great guy, but I'm not a fan to be honest, while having a famous Father can be a burden, at the same it can give you opportunities you might not have otherwise. And while Peter makes a good point about Italian cinema being in decline, if Michele Soavi could do something as great as Stagefright in 87 I'm not sure that's a good enough excuse.

I agree but I have found people tend to juge him by comparing him to his father.

STAGEFIRGHT is an excellent film and there are a few other really good Italian films from around that time, but in general most of them are really poor. Filmmakers just never had the same budgets (even though many films from the 70's were also low budget they were still pretty big compared to the later films) and freedom as those in the 60's and 70's with the increasing censorship and the influence of TV. (actually I think the state of Italian horror and exploitation in the late 80's is worth a thread of it's own )

On the plus side the 80's did allow Lamberto Bava to make the awesome BLASTFIGHTER:

I really like everything i have seen by Lamberto, admittedly not an awful lot but -

Rabid Dogs (co-directed)
Macabre
A Blade in the Dark
Demons
Demons 2
Delirium

are all in my view excellent films. I don't really count his "Brivido giallo" entries as they were for tv.

Default Lamberto Bava

The dvds I have by Lamberto Bava are
Demons
Demons 2
The Torturer
A Blade In The Dark

I've read about Midnight Ripper aka You'll Die At Midnight and the reviews are good
I would never see Blastfighter
Didn't really like Macabre

Would the fact that Serena Grandi is in DELIRIUM be the reason you like it?

I have enjoyed all the films of his I have yet seen, except for the astonishingly dull Graveyard Disturbance.

I really liked A Blade In The Dark and the two Demons films and when I finally saw Macabre it was even better than I could have hoped.

I like that he is well aware of the absurdity of what he's doing and isn't afraid to use a tongue in cheek approach (ref: the wonderful ending of Macabre).
