Antonio Margheriti

Any fans of the late, great Antonio Margheriti?

A fine director who could turn his hand at any genre, he never really get's the praise he deserves IMO.

My favourite AM movies are:

TORNADO (aka TORNADO STRIKE FORCE), NAKED YOU DIE!, CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE, SEVEN DEATHS IN THE CAT'S EYE, THE STRANGER AND THE GUNFIGHTER (aka BLOOD MONEY), VENGEANCE, CODE NAME: WILD GEESE.

Pete 31st July 2011 01:18 PM

Just looking at the IMDB page for the LAST HUNTER and it's pretty shoddy. It's get's the film's plot completely wrong, says the UK title was HUNTER OF THE APOCALYPSE (which it isn't) and that the title of LAST HUNTER was used in 'undefined' territories! That's the proper translated title, which was used in the UK, US, Australia (I think).

My love for Mr Margheriti may be a matter of public record all ready...

Gojirosan 31st July 2011 01:35 PM

This thread has made me just order The Last Hunter and Commando Leopard...

Pete 31st July 2011 01:38 PM

I didn't like COMMANDO LEOPARD. I used to have the ABUK DVD and the german ediiton which you can get as part of an excellent boxset from Germany, which also contains CODE NAME: WILD GEESE, THE COMMANDER and THE WILD GEESE. You can get it for around £20 on e-bay.

If only someone would release TORNADO!

Gojirosan 31st July 2011 01:48 PM

To be honest, I didn't like it much either, but it has an odd place in my heart as me and a mate used to get drunk and laugh at it back in the 90s. So I wanted to get a copy again!

:D

The best thing about the DVD is the on set footage showing Klaus Kinski being his usual angry self.

Gojirosan 31st July 2011 01:50 PM

Oh, and may I just say...

KILLER FISH!!!

Demdike@Cult Labs 31st July 2011 02:32 PM

Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye is the sexiest gothic masterpiece Hammer never made. One of my favourite films of all time, Not just from the horror genre.

If this was the only film Margheriti made he would still be a genius in my eyes.

The fact Margheriti or Dawson as he goes under for this film, armed himself with a great cast of film stars - Jane Birkin, Serge Gainsbourg and Anton Diffring - and not just the usual plethora of Italian journeymen that appear in every other giallo is a great credit to him and producer Luigi Nannerini.

bdc 31st July 2011 07:16 PM

My favourite Margheriti horror films (in no particular order):

The Virgin of Nuremberg (1963)
Castle of Blood (1964)
The Long Hair of Death (1964)

I enjoy Margheriti's '80s war efforts and would dearly like to see 'em all (bar Commando Leopard as i already have ABUK's edition.) on U.K. DVD. How about it, Shameless? Cannibal Apocalypse also obviously occupies a healthy spot in my collection and Vengeance is pretty watchable too. I did own both 4-Front's '90s VHS release and the German X-Rated Kult DVD set of the latter film but have yet to delve into buying the relevant Spagwest in SD again. Ark Of The Sun God remains a good laugh and it'd be nice to see both this title, Yor:Hunter From The Future and Hunters Of The Golden Cobra benefitting from a British lease of life. Sounds like another job for Shameless to me.:)

Margerhetti was one of those master craftsmen who could take total rubbish amd craft something genuinelly entertaining.

My favourite is cannibal apocalypse, though I also found alien from the deep fairly entertaining.

CASTLE OF BLOOD is a very good film from Marghereti and underrated with a nice twist - the R1 Synapse is the best dvd to get
CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE is a good film though not the best of the CANNIBAL films - I have the R1 Image w/lots of extras
THE LAST HUNTER with David Warbeck, disappointing

I'm sure I saw his films on video years ago, WILD GEESE rip offs etc but I wouldn't buy them now!

Phurious 14th September 2011 12:50 PM

Saw Codename Wild Geese recently. Lewis Collins was like an agitated rock and Klaus Kinski was dubbed by a very camp upper class Englishman, but the highlight was the model work for a car chase in a tunnel - outsanding in it's lack of attempt at being realistic - wonderfully hilariously brilliant.

Gojirosan 14th September 2011 12:50 PM

...And God Said To Cain is one of the greatest of all Spaghetti Westerns and may well be my favourite of Margheriti's films now. There is not a decent quality English friendly version available, which is a crying shame. Even the non-English friendly German release (which has pretty decent picture quality) has been cropped from 'scope to 16:9, sadly.

This film NEEDS a release.

There is a Italian DVD in the correct 2.35:1 ratio but unfortunately, it's not English friendly.

I was excited today when I happened to spot Margheriti's THE SQUEEZE in HMV.

My excitement soon went when I noticed it had been released by Elstree Hill. :ohwell: (great cover though)

Thanks, P. I'll buy it anyway. Yes, I do love the film that much.

The Snow Devils dvd review

PaulD 23rd September 2011 08:07 PM

Everytime I see this thread pop up I can't help but think of Eli Roth's ridiculous Italian accent in the cineme scene in Inglourious Basterds.

Any idea if the above is a worthy release in widescreen with suitable PQ and the film's trailer?:)

bdc 22nd October 2011 11:41 AM

Screen Aspect: 16 X 9 FULL FRAME (info from Warner)

"YOR, THE HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE is one of those movies that probably would have never been given any kind of legit DVD release if not for the movie studios now offering up special DVDs on-demand. We can thank the Warner Archives for giving Yor his long overdue. Even if they are only offering it in a full frame format and not offering the other 90+ minutes of the Italian TV miniseries from which it was cobbled together, this newly remastered print has to be the most pristine print of the movie to ever be made available, at least until the day finally comes that Hollywood greenlights a remake starring Justin Bieber." (foywonder.livejournal.com)

Seeing it was originally made for tv,I guess full frame would be the correct aspect ratio?
It was probably soft matted (masking applied) in cinema's?

Splatterdragon73 23rd October 2011 09:33 AM

Cheers for the info and i may just be tempted to indulge in a copy sooner or later.:)
