The final two songs on the first side of 'Muscle Of Love'

Track #3 is entitled 'Hard Hearted Alice', and it is *gasp* a ballad!

Nothing special

Alice Cooper - Vocals
Neal Smith - Drums and Vocals
Dennis Dunaway - Bass and Vocals
Glen Buxton - Lead Guitar
Michael Bruce - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Piano and Organ
Bob Dolin - Keyboards
Mick Mashbir - Guitar
Dick Wagner - Guitar

03/09 - Hard Hearted Alice (Cooper, Bruce)

"Live, coast to coast
White hot as a ghost
When you live in a countdown

Time, is free as a jailbird
At least that's what I heard
When you live in a hideout

Love, comes cheap at a swapmeet
It all comes so dirt cheap
When you live, in a bedroom

Love, cuts deep as a laser
But that ain't amazin'
When you live in a cancer

Ah-ah-ah ah-ah-ah ah-ah-ah ah-ah-ah ah

Mind, gets scrambled like eggs
Get bruised and erased
When you live in a brainstorm

Noise, seems logically right
Ringing ears in the night
When you live in an airport

Ah-ah-ah ah-ah-ah ah-ah-ah ah-ah-ah ah

Hard hearted Alice
Is what we want to be
Hard hearted Alice
Is what you want to see

Hard hearted Alice
Is what we want to be
Hard hearted Alice
Is what you want to see"

The final song on side one is a good one - 'Crazy Little Child' .

Alice does Jazz!

It's one of the few songs on the album which does not have a sexual connection. Instead, it is about a young criminal, who thinks he is better than he actually is

The line up is the same as above, but with the addition of Paul Prestipino on the Banjo

04/09 - Crazy Little Child (Cooper, Bruce)

"Crazy little child
Never got to see
All the pretty things in life
Had him put away
Nothing they could say
Could ever make the pieces fit

Aw well, Daddy-o was rich
Mama was a bitch
Living wasn't easy in between
Behind his silent scream
Jackson in his teens
Was planning his escape

He was a crazy little child
New Orleans Alley playground
Grimy faced he watched the hookers cry
Winos were his friends
And when he talked to them
They said, "Jackson, boy, they'll get you by and by"

Depression settin' in
Desp'rate, cool and quick
Jackson learned the ropes out on the street
Little candy stores
Just pickin' locks and doors
Was practice for a two bit killer little thief

So Jackson went to Ritz
And everyone was hip
Ritz ran all the rackets there in town
If you need another boy
A trigger or a blade
Well, I'm the slickest cat around

Yeah, Ritz gave him the eye
Once over, then he smiled
"Yeah, I've got something here in mind
If you meet me here at two
I think you'll like the view
Of that long green when you crack that safe tonight"

He was a crazy little child
New Orleans Alley playground
And grimy faced
He watched the hookers cry, whoo
Winos were his friends
And when he talked to them
They said, "Jackson, boy, they'll get you by and by,"
That's right

Well, I'll wait for you outside
And I'll be your ears and your eyes
And boy, you just slip in there and bring out all that loot
But Ritz was taken by surprise
Couple of unspecting guys
And they left poor Jackson inside

Questions there were few
In fact there were none
When those Sheriff's bullets start to fly
Lay dying on the floor
With a smokin' forty four
He said, "I must admit the winos were right"

Crazy little child
Never got to see
All the pretty things in life
We buried him today
Nothing we could say
Could ever make the pieces fit

Yeah, I must admit the winos were right
Oh, I must admit the winos were right
His last words were..
I must admit the winos were right"

I do have to admit that "Muscle of Love" is not one of my favourite albums, AC or otherwise. I even prefer "Alice Cooper Goes to Hell" to it.

It's a very 'bitty' album. Side two is much better than side one

Talking of which, the second side of 'Muscle Of Love' opens up with 'Working Up A Sweat', which is a good one

Backing vocals on the song are provided by The Pointer Sisters, who are best known for the song 'Jump (for my love)' in 1984

Alice Cooper - Vocals
Neal Smith - Drums and Vocals
Dennis Dunaway - Bass and Vocals
Glen Buxton - Lead Guitar
Michael Bruce - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Piano and Organ
Bob Dolin - Keyboards
Mick Mashbir - Guitar
Dick Wagner - Guitar
The Pointer Sisters - Backing Vocals
Stanley "The Baron" Behrens - Harmonica

05/09 - Working Up A Sweat (Cooper, Bruce)

"Aw, When you touch there, honey
Makes my blood perspire
You got my body flaming
Like a California fire
Pulsing, pounding, pushing
No longer in control
Heatwave in my brain
Smolder in my soul

You got me workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
I've been playing all night long
Time I was gettin' home
But I've got no place to get

Spontaneous combustion
Scientific fact
But your approach to friction
An unnatural act
Bells I hear ain't fire drills
I hope you understand
It's a bona fide five alarmer
A fly's melting in my hand

You got me workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
I've been playing all night long
Time I was gettin' home
But I've got no place to get

Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
Yeah, yeah

I've been playing all night long
'Bout time I was gettin' home
But I've, ooh

Dante's famed inferno
Was a trip to hell and back
But you and a bottle in a cheap hotel
Screams pyromaniac
Bandages come off today
Really feeling sick
The hardest part explainin'
All those blisters on my - nose!

Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
I've been playing all night long
Time I was gettin' home
But I've got no place to get

Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat

I've been playing all night long
'Bout time I was gettin' home
But I've, ooh

Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat
Workin' up a sweat"

The second song on side two is the albums title track - 'Muscle Of Love' , which is a solid rocker

06/09 - Muscle Of Love (Cooper, Bruce)

"Aw, who's the queen of the locker room
Who's the cream of the crop
Poor Joey took her to the matinee
Said, "God, she wouldn't stop!"

Holy muscle of love
My heart's a muscle

Well, I must have caught you that crazy age
Where everything is hot
'Cause I don't know if the things I'm thinking
Are normal thoughts or not

Holy muscle of love
Yeah, I got a muscle of love
Yeah
Ooh

I read Dad's books like I did before
Now things are crystal clear
Lock the door in the bathroom now
I just can't get caught in here

Holy muscle of love
Well, I got a muscle of love
Holy muscle of love
I got a muscle of love
Holy muscle of love
My heart's a muscle of love
Holy muscle of love
Well, I got a muscle of love
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Must be a gift from above
Yeah, yeah, yeah

(Hallelujah, etc.)"

A bit pricey and i'd like to see the actual packaging before I go for it, I hope it's not like other Rhino box sets with cardboard slips for the album covers in a big slipcase to hold them all!

I have them all apart from the last 4 - the pre-metal 80's albums!

Two more songs from 'Muscle Of Love'

Track #7 is an interesting curio, which goes by the title 'The Man With The Golden Gun'

Does that name suggest anything to you? As explained by Alice's personal assistant, Renfield, in 1995: "At the end of the credits of most James Bond films, there is a teaser that says something like "Watch for 007 next summer in 'Never Say Never'." Alice, being the Bond fan that he is, had seen one of these that said "Watch For 'The Man With The Golden Gun'." He figured, Hey, I'll write a song with that title and they'll be practically forced to use it! I think what he didn't count on was that in 1973/74, the name Alice Cooper was still much to controversial to be attached to a mainstream project like James Bond. Better to go with someone safe like Lulu"

In 2011, Alice himself said: "It was supposed to be the Bond theme, but it actually came in a day too late, and by the time they heard it, they’d already signed for Lulu's song. I went, "You're gonna take Lulu over this?" [Laughs.] 'Cause it was perfect for The Man With The Golden Gun. It had helicopters, it had machine guns—it had the Pointer Sisters, Ronnie Spector, and Liza Minnelli doing background vocals! We went to every single one of those John Barry albums to try and invent the perfect James Bond song, and even Christopher Lee, who played Scaramanga in the movie, said, "Oh, man, why did we take the Lulu song? This song is the one!" [Laughs.] So, yeah, we lost out on that one, but I still put it on the album. I said, "I don't care, I’m going to do a James Bond track no matter what.""

Backing vocals on the song are provided by Liza Minelli

Alice Cooper - Vocals
Neal Smith - Drums and Vocals
Dennis Dunaway - Bass and Vocals
Glen Buxton - Lead Guitar
Michael Bruce - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Piano and Organ
Bob Dolin - Keyboards
Mick Mashbir - Guitar
Dick Wagner - Guitar
Liza Minelli - Backing Vocals

07/09 - The Man With The Golden Gun (Cooper, Bruce, Dunaway, Smith, Buxton)

"The man with the golden gun
He`s waiting somewhere out there
For you

But you'll never see him
He'll be looking for you

Demand for the golden gun
It's high priced precise and true

But you'll never see him
He'll be looking for you

The man with the golden gun in his pocket, Oh, oh
The man with the golden gun in his case, Oh, oh
The man with the golden gun in your face

But you'll never see him
He'll be looking for you
You better believe
He'll be looking for you

He-e-e-e-e-e's, The man with the golden gun in his pocket
The man with the golden gun in his case
The man with the golden gun in his pocket
The man with the golden gun in your face

But you'll never see him
He'll be looking for you
You better believe
He'll be looking for yo-ou

He-e-e-e-e-e's, The man with the golden gun in his pocket
The man with the golden gun in his case
The man with the golden gun in his pocket
The man with the golden gun in your face

The man with the golden gun in his pocket
The man with the golden gun in his case
The man who gave you the golden gun"

The penultimate album song is 'Teenage Lament '74' , which is a good song, although it is very much a 1970's acoustic rock song

Backing vocals were provided by Liza Minnelli, La Belle (Noma and Sarah), Ronnie Spector and The Pointer Sisters

08/09 - Teenage Lament '74 (Cooper, Smith)

"What a drag it is
These gold lame' jeans
Is this the coolest way
To get though your teens
Well, I cut my hair weird
I read that it was in
I looked like a rooster
That was drowned and raised again

What are you a-gonna do
Tell you what I'm a-gonna do
Why don't you get away
I'm gonna live today

I ran into my room
And I fell down on my knees
I thought that fifteen
Was gonna be a breeze
I picked up my guitar
To blast way the clouds
But somebody in the next room yelled
"You gotta turn that damn thing down"

What are you gonna do
Tell you what I'm a-gonna do
Why don't you get away
I'm gonna cry all day

And I know trouble is brewing out there
But I can hardly care
They fight all night about his private secretary
Lipstick stain, blonde hair, oh,oh, oh

What are you gonna do
Tell you what I'm a-gonna do
Why don't you run away
I'm gonna live today

But even I don't know what I'm gonna do
Don't know what I'm gonna do
No!

What are you a-gonna do
Tell you what I'm a-gonna do
Why don't you run away
I'm gonna live today

What are you a-gonna do
I'll tell you what I'm a-gonna do
Why don't you get away
Well, I'd rather cry all day

What are you gonna do
Gonna do
Gonna do

What are you gonna do
Gonna do
Gonna do

What are you gonna do
Gonna do
Gonna do

What are you gonna do
Gonna do
Gonna do

What are you gonna do
Gonna do
Gonna do

What are you gonna do
Gonna do
Gonna do

What are you gonna do
Gonna do
Gonna do (Alice, Alice, Alice, Alice)

What are you gonna do [Background singer ad lib]
Gonna do
Gonna do

What are you gonna do
What are you
Gonna do
(fade)"

The final song on 'Muscle Of Love' is entitled 'Woman Machine', and, it's a science fiction-themed song dating back to the band's early years. As Alice explained, "basically a chauvinistic song. It's about a female robot, like Julie Newmar was on that TV program with Bob Cummings. If we had women robots, they could do anything, even sexual things, just by changing their tubes." The television programme he is referring to was called 'My Living Doll', and it aired on US television from September 1964 to March 1965.

Alice Cooper - Vocals
Neal Smith - Drums and Vocals
Dennis Dunaway - Bass and Vocals
Glen Buxton - Lead Guitar
Michael Bruce - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Piano and Organ

09/09Woman Machine (Cooper, Bruce, Dunaway, Smith, Buxton)

"She'll do your work in half the time
Never sick and can't go blind
Oh, woman machine

Brain of tape that fill her head
She knows more now than all the dead
Oh, woman machine

Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine

Heart of steel and skin that's cold
Can't wear her out, she can't grow old
Oh, woman machine

She goes to bed when her work is through
She'll do it all, just change the tubes
Oh, woman machine

Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine

Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman

She can't talk back
With no playback
But she'll listen
To all your woe
Trade your old one
For a new one
They just don't make 'em like they used to
No!

Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine
Oh, woman machine "

The computer voice at the end of the song is Alice reading from a studio manual. Most of it is unintelligible!

The 'Muscle Of Love' tour was actually billed as the 'Billion Dollar Babies Holiday Tour'. This tour was basically a continuation of the previous tour, but with a few songs changed.

In addition to the band members, the tour also featured:

Mick Mashbir - guitar
Bob Dolin - keyboards
Cindy Smith - Giant Tooth
The Amazing Randi - Dentist, Executioner
Bob Greene - Santa

A sample setlist consisted of:

Hello Hooray
Billion Dollar Babies
Elected
I'm Eighteen
Big Apple Dreamin' (Hippo)
Muscle Of Love
Hard Hearted Alice
My Stars
Unfinished Sweet
(Night on bald mountain-tape)
Sick Things
Dead Babies
I Love The Dead
(Night on bald mountain-tape)
School's Out
Working Up A Sweat
(Christmas Song tape)

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the end of part one

The original Alice Cooper Band, (Alice Cooper, Michael Bruce, Glen Buxton, Neal Smith and Dennis Dunaway) ceased to exist after the South America '74 tour. The reasons for the split have been debated for years among fans and the full truth will probably never be known.
  • It`s been suggested that the Band members didn`t want to do the theatrics any more, and they wanted to concentrate on a more 'heavy metal' style of music
  • It`s been suggested that band manager Shep Gordon only wanted to deal with Alice so as to split the money only two ways.
  • It`s been suggested that Alice didn`t want to return to the band and face Glen Buxton`s health problems (and his own).
  • It's even been said that Alice "fired" the band which is completely untrue (he couldn`t, they were equal partners).

Whatever the reasons (and all these could have been a factor) it's unlikely that it was a cut-and-dried reason.

So what happened to the original Alice Cooper Group?

Glen Buxton - Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Glen maintained a low profile, playing only occasional club gigs with bands like Shrapnel and Virgin. A few weeks before his 50th birthday, in 1997, he died of complications from pneumonia
Michael Bruce - Released a solo album entitled 'In My Own Way' in 1975, using some of the additional musicians from the 'B$B' and 'Muscle Of Love Tour'. In 1976, he formed a band called 'Billion Dollar Babies'
Dennis Dunaway - Formed 'Billion Dollar Babies' in 1976. He currently plays guitar in the band Blue Coupe, and reunited with Alice on the 2011 album 'Welcome 2 My Nightmare'
Neil Smith - Formed 'Billion Dollar Babies' in 1976. He then spent some time selling real estate in AMerica before reuniting with Alice on the 2011 album 'Welcome 2 My Nightmare'

The original band were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2011

And what of Alice himself?

He was about to have a nightmare...

INTERMISSION

In between the split of The Alice Cooper Group and the release of the first solo Alice Cooper album, Alice found the time to provide vocals to two songs on the John Enthwistle solo album 'Flash Fearless Vs. the Zorg Women' in 1975, a comic book set to music!

Alongside Alice, the album features a very impressive list of musicians:
  • JOHN ENTWISTLE (bass) was the only musician involved on every track on the LP (apart from one short synth reprise). It would seem this LP followed directly from the "Mad Dog" sessions
  • ELKIE BROOKS (vocals). ex-Vinegar Joe
  • JIM DANDY (vocals). The lead singer of Black Oak Arkansas
  • JAMES DEWAR (vocals). Bassist/vocalist for the Robin Trower Band
  • MADDY PRIOR (vocals). Steeleye Span
  • FRANK MILLER (vocals)
  • KEITH MOON. Presumably dragged into the project by Entwistle, albeit only in a cameo speaking role during "Space Pirates" (what else?). Ultimately his contribution was mixed so low that it's hard to see why they bothered, particularly as he had to be recorded specially in Los Angeles.
  • JUSTIN HAYWARD (guitar). Moody Blues
  • BILL BRUFORD (drums). Yes and King Crimson
  • CARMINE APPICE (drums). Having risen to prominence with US band Vanilla Fudge, Appice was at this time the drummer in supergroup (Jeff) Beck, (Tim) Bogert (also from Vanilla Fudge) and Appice
  • KENNY JONES (drums). Then in the Faces, although that band soon fell apart when Rod Stewart's solo career became too big to combine both careers and guitarist Ron Wood joined The Rolling Stones. This LP features the first example of Entwistle and Jones as a rhythm section, which of course would become a fixture when Jones joined The Who on the death of Keith Moon.
  • NICKY HOPKINS (piano). A man who needs no introduction, having played with just about everybody from the Roling Stones and The Who downwards. His death in 1994 was a sad loss to rock music.
  • Other musicans featured included ROBERT A. JOHNSON (guitar); JOHN WEIDER (ex Animals/Family) (bass); EDDIE JOBSON (Roxy Music) (strings); MIKE DEACON (ex Suzi Quatro, then with Kiki Dee, later in Darts!) (piano); MICK GRABHAM (Procol Harum) (guitar); JIM FRANK (harmonica); CHICK CHURCHILL (Ten Years After) (keyboards); HOWIE CASEY (respected session musician going back to Liverpool's Howy Casey & The Seniors) (Saxaphone); STEVE PETTICAN (errm...) (slide guitar); THUNDERTHIGHS (1974 hit single, but best remembered for "doo doo doos" on Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side") (backing vocalist); LESLEY DUNCAN and CHANTER SISTERS (respected vocalists) (backingvocals).

The first contribution from Alice is the albums second song, entitled 'I'm Flash'

Alice Cooper - Vocals
Robert A. Johnson - Lead Guitar
Johnny Weider - Guitar
John Entwistle - Bass
Bill Bruford - Drums

"I'm Flash, I'm the hero
I'm the bopper who's the poppa of the crew
I'm Flash, and I fight evil
And my spaceship flies the red, white and blue
I'm Flash, like a streaker
You'll find me cruising out among the stars
And I'm feared by every outlaw
And every renegade from Jupiter to Mars

The jails are full in Saturn and I can tell you why
'Cause I'm the full-blasting, protoblasting hero of the sky
On Mars the smugglers starve no matter what they try
'Cause I'm the everlasting, flabber-ghasting guy who's flying high

I'm Flash, yeah, I'm the hero
From the stars spangled U.S of A
I believe in packin' punchin' power
And hitting fast 'cause that's the only way
I'm Flash

I'm Flash, and I'm a mover
My spaceship glides at twice the speed of light
I'm Flash, and I'm a He-Man
I'm a six foot one inch block of dynamite
I'm Flash, in shining armor
And I love to rescue damsels in distress
And my wave length is always open so I can answer any call of S.O.S

I've been in trouble of the worst kind ever since I left the womb
I'm a death defying, terrifying spotlight in the gloom
When you see me coming, boys, just give me lots of room
'Cause I'm the liquefying, crucifying harbinger of doom

I'm Flash, I'm the hero
I'm the bopper who's the poppa of the crew
I'm Flash, and I fight evil
And my spaceship flies a red, white and blue
You know, my spaceship flies a red, white and blue
I said, my spaceship flies the stars spangled red, white and blue
I'm Flash, spelled F - L - A - S - H"

The second song with Alice is track #5 on the album, called 'Space Pirates'

Justin Hayward - Acoustic Guitar
Kenny Jones - Drums
John Entwistle - Bass
Nicky Hopkins - Piano
Keith Moon - Long John Silver (spoken)
Steve Pettican - Slide Guitar

"Out of the blue came a kill-crazy crew
Whose motto was stomp on the weak
With bones in their hair
They was hungry as bears
And their leader was King of the freaks

They was... Space Pirates
The lowest scum of the yellow sun
They was... Space Pirates
Sack a galaxy just for fun
(fire away hahaha)

Well now, out of the blue came this wolf pack who knew
That the name of the game was to hate
Perverts and pimps followed one-legged gimps
They was bow legged bastards of fate

They was... Space Pirates
Skulls lie white on the martian sands
They was... Space Pirates
An empires ransom in their hands
(people were scared hahaha)

Out of the blue came this mind-blowing zoo
A collection of mutated crud
Death on their hips
There was foam on their lips
And behind them a shadow of blood

They was... Space Pirates
Broken bodies and twisted minds
They was... Space Pirates
Screaming nightmares left behind

Out of the blue came a kill-crazy crew
Whose motto was stomp on the weak
Bones in their hair
They was hungry as bears
And their leader was King of the freaks

They was... Space Pirates
The lowest scum of a yellow sun
They was... Space Pirates
Sack a galaxy just for fun"
