How many support bands do most people actually go and watch? Answer - not many. They are too busy staying in the bar, or because they have to work, and then get something to eat, travel to the show etc, they don't get there much before the headlining act arrive Alice also feels the need to put on a show which is very theatrical, to a) compete *cough* with the headline act, and b) it's what the fans want/expect Don't forget that most Mutley Crow fans probably only know 'Schools Out' and 'Poison', so I think it's obvious that this is going to be a 'greatest hits' set to introduce his songs to the ears of the young whippersnappers in the audience! |
Quote:
I doubt the fans are young whippersnappers either, most will be 30-50 i would think. The band aren't exactly cutting edge anymore and haven't been for 20 years. |

Crue haven't been 'glam' since circa 1986 - between the 'Theatre of Pain' and 'Girls Girls Girls' LPs. Nowadays, they are more 'sleaze rock' Although I have seen Nirvana, Mudhoney, Babes in Toyland, I really don't know much about the whole 'Grunge' movement. Similarly, although I might know the name 'Rammstein', Slipknot' and 'Limp Biscuit', I really don't know a lot about the music they perform My 'formative' years were 1980 - 1990 (i.e the NWOBHM and the birth of thrash). However, because I was so narrow-minded back in those days, there are a lot of rock bands that I didn't give the time of day to, because they didn't have a 'traditional English sound', or they didn't play 'a million miles an hour'! To be honest, during this time, I discounted Alice as a good artist for the simple reason he didn't fit in with the two examples above! Now I have 'grown up', I am more willing to listen to different bands, but I am sure there are still people who are like the person I used to be Oh - a lot of people like Mutley Crow because of the 'tits' - witness the Tommy-Cam segment on the 'Carnival of Sins' DVD. Alice is much more mature than that! |
Quote:
Every rock fan i know has always moved with the times and music, whilst also sticking by their old favourites. Your dismissal of most things that aren't The Who or Alice does tend to work against you at times. If people just like Crue because of the tits as you put it, then they may as well just listen to rap. I've probably phrased it all very badly, but absolutely no insult is intended Suzi. :) |
I'd say more youngsters would be aware of Alice than Crue. Alice has been consistently in Kerrang and Metal Hammer over the past few years (not to mention regular headline tours with well-attended dates and festival shows), whereas Motley Crue really only had a re-surge in interest thanks to Kat Von D and Bam Margera - both of whom have gone out of fashion now. As for Crue fans not knowing any Alice stuff - I completely disagree. I'm with Demdike on this one. Don't forget that Crue recently toured with KISS in the States. If anything, it's likely that Alice has the support slot rather than the headline slot purely because it's meant to be Crue's farewell tour. They've taken headline place for that reason, and chosen Alice as support as it'll bring a larger crowd. If it was Motley Crue with some random band of a similar genre, they'd struggle to fill the venues. |

Incidentally, I used to be a big fan of the Crow. I have the 'Too Fast For Love' vinyl release (on the original Leathür Records label), the original gatefold release of 'Shout At The Devil', Theatre of Pain, Girls, Girls, Girls and Dr. Feelgood and the aforementioned 'Carnival of Sins' DVD |
I'd also disagree with people only liking Crue for the tits - we live in a world where the internet is a thing, and it is a thing that is full of tits and more. You don't have to go to a concert to see breasts anymore. (In fact, that sort of thing is probably dying out now. I haven't seen concert-knockers in probably 10 years!) |
Well, seeing as it's only Suze, Applecore and i who have posted anything on the forum in the last three hours i think we should all chill out on the porch with a cold beer and watch the tumbleweeds roll by on the rest of the forum. |
Haha, well it's just past midnight here so I'll be soon logging off for the night anyway! |
I've seen Alice live once, it was a great show. Veary theatrical. He cut his head off with a guillotine and stabbed a baby with a sword during Billion Doller Babies. Generation Landslide, Hard Hearted Alice, I Better Be Good, Is It My Body, and any thing off of Killers, Goes To Hell and Welcome To My Nightmare are among my plethora of favorites. |
RIP Dick Wagner Richard 'Dick' Wagner was one of Alice's most notable guitarists. He first turned up on the 'School's Out' album, where he provided the solo on the song 'My Stars'. He appeared on 'Billion Dollar Babies', playing guitar and co-writing 'I Love The Dead', although his contribution to the lyrics is uncredited. He then played on 'Muscle Of Love' With the break up of the original Alice Cooper Group, and the emergence of Alice Cooper (the solo artist), Wagner was probably the single most important musician on board. His sense of melody and guitar playing were essential to Alice's survival on his own. He co-wrote and performed with Alice on all the albums from 'Welcome To My Nightmare' until 'From The Inside'. He later turned up on 'Zipper Catches Skin', 'Dada' and co-wrote 'Might As Well Be On Mars' for the 'Hey Stoopid' album, although he didn't play on the record Apparently he also co-wrote some material for 'The Last Temptation' which didn't make the final album. On July 30th 2014, it was anounced that Dick Wagner had passed away following a series of heart and lung problems. |
I remember buying "From the Inside" and a workmate saying "it's crap, Wagner's not on it!" He was a stalwart fan who felt about the "Alice Cooper Band" in much the same way as I felt about the classic Deep Purple, Yes and Uriah Heep line-ups. I think that he was wrong about the album being "crap" but right about Wagner, he was a great contributor to the Alice Cooper mythos and will be missed. |
Quote:
Incidentally, Dick Wagner IS on the album, alongside Steve Lukather (from Toto)and Rick Nielsen (from Cheap Trick). He also co-wrote 7 of the ten songs included Also, your mate was wrong. 'FTI' is not by the Alice Cooper Band. It is by Alice Cooper as a solo artist |
With the untimely death of Robin Williams in mind... ...Did you know that Alice Cooper is mentioned in the very first episode of 'Mork And Mindy'? Mork and Mindy Season 1 Episode 1 Pilot - YouTube From about 13 minutes in |

Apparently there is a Paul McCartney tribute covers album due to be released soon - Kiss, Alice Cooper and Bob Dylan Lead All-Star 'Art of McCartney' Tribute It's possible that Alice was meeting with Paul for this project, and not the Alice covers album |
3 Attachment(s) When people find out that I am a fan of Alice Cooper, one of the questions that ALWAYS seems to come us is...what is the meaning of the make-up Well, when he has been wearing make-up, Alice has had a number of looks: Eyes When he first started wearing eye make-up, the first design is known as 'the spider eyes' [fig 1]. Yes, the design looks like spiders, but the actual concept comes from the heavy make-up worn by Bette Davis in 'Whatever Happened To Baby Jane', mixed with the idea of "tears of someone crying making the mascara run" This was later changed to the more famous 'Clown' make-up, and this is actually inspired by the sad clown which would appear in Italian opera [fig 2] Mouth When it comes to the mouth area, most people assume that this is supposed to represent (either) vampire fangs, or a trail of blood down the chin where a victim has been bitten. However, the actual design is (I think) more disturbing that that. The lines down Alice's face represent a ventriloquist dummy [pic 3] |
Alice covers 'Eleanor Rigby' for the 'Art of McCartney' Tribute album Alice Cooper - Eleanor Rigby - YouTube It seems a bit of a pointless cover. The tune is so much like The Beatles version, they might just as well used the original backing track, and there is none of the Alice persona in the vocals It's a loving version yes, but it could have been so much more |

BBC4 is showing the 'Brutally Live' concert at midnight on Friday 31st Oct/Saturday 1st Nov "The rocker's inimitable stage show, filmed at the Hammersmith Apollo, London, in July 2000, in support of his album Brutal Planet. The musician combines his distinct brand of rock and theatre with the use of elaborate props to unsettle and surprise his audience. His trademark demonic style is manifested with his famous costumes and sets that include a guillotine, a werewolf baby, pools of fake blood and thick black eye makeup." It's a very good show, but I wish they would pick up the 'Theatre Of Death' show, and screen that! |
1 Attachment(s) It has been announced that Alice will be returning to Hellfest in France for the festival which takes place between 19th and 21st June in Clisson. Headliners across the weekend appear to be Slipknot, Scorpions and Faith No More so it looks like he will have a special guest slot. |

The cheapo DAB radio in the kitchen crevice of the cave here is permanently tuned to Planet Rock so that when I go to make Pearl's nightly cocoa I don't have to tune it in to listen to the "Nights with Alice Cooper" show. It's easily the best show on radio since Rick Wakeman stopped doing his Saturday afternoon show. Al Murray's "Defender of the Planet Rock Tradition" on a Sunday afternoon is good too but Alice is on another level entirely! |

I have planet rock on in the kitchen, on my dab alarm clock next to my bed and also just had my in-car dab fixed due to dodgy seat aerial and its now up and running in there too now. Alice Cooper is so hilariously dry witted, not afraid to say anything about anyone. Even the adverts for his show are great....'Alice Cooper doent need to flush the toilet.....he just scares the crap out of it'! Does any other DJ in this country have that as a selling point? classic. |
It looks like Alice is appearing at the Graspop Festival in Belgium sometime between the 19 - 21 June, 2015 https://www.graspop.be/nl/poster |
that looks like a good line up Suzi  |
Here's a bit of trivia for you When the film 'The Exorcist' had it's London premier in March 1974, Alice attended as the special guest of Linda Blair |

1 Attachment(s) Circa 1967 - Before they were The Alice Cooper Band, they were The Nazz (Alice in centre of pic) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN2QhveORc0 |
Some pretty advanced lyrics for '67 there Suzi compared with say; "Daydream Believer" and "Puppet on a string!" |
Tod Rundgren's Nazz are worth checking out too. I think they were formed before Alice's band hence the change to Alice Cooper. |
RIP Kim Fowley Although he is probably best remembered for the all girl group The Runaways, he also co-wrote the song 'Escape' from "Welcome To My Nightmare" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qgkple874w Fowley later sued Randy Bachman, from Bachman Turner Overdrive claiming that the song 'Down To The Line' (from the album 'Head On') sounded like 'Escape' (Alice was not involved as he wrote the lyrics and not the music). BTO settled out of court and he both Fowley and Cooper had their names added to the publishing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1kzz0Xjsh0 |
