I found it to be a bit 'Novelty' to be honest. I wasn't a fan.

Cheers, Justin. I wondered that myself.

I'd love to hear Cooper, Depp, Perry and co produce some new material though.

The Hollywood Vampires are supposed to be writing some new material, which will probably lead to the the irony of an Alice Cooper show featuring covers and a Hollywood Vampires show featuring original songs!

I wasn't impressed with what I have heard of the Vampires album. As Justin said, it's a gimmick rather than a proper album in the same way that 'Pin-Up's' is a gimmick rather than a proper Bowie album

It looks like there is a new/re-issue box set of 5 albums coming soon

The set contains 'Billion Dollar Babies', 'Muscle Of Love', 'Welcome To My Nightmare', 'Goes To Hell' and the live 'Alice Cooper Show', all of which are recommended

Release date is June 17, and Amazon has it for pre-order at £13.69

Tonight (May 21st) is the last night of the first leg of the 'Spend The Night With Alice Cooper' tour

From Tuesday (May 24th) until June 6th, the Vampires are out on tour, with Alice resuming his solo shows on June 9th

It'll be interesting to see:

a) what the setlist for the Vampires is
b) what the setlist for Alice is, when the tour resumes - are there still lots of 'oldies' and covers, or has he listened to 'the fans', and changed things

The 1989 album was 'Trash'. No - that was the title of the record, although... Stop it Susan! You have to avoid the obvious jokes!!

'Trash' saw a change of labels from MCA to Epic, and it was designed to be a commercial hit, and it succeeded. Producer Desmond Child was brought in to oversee the recording, and this is where much of the problem with the record lies. It is less an Alice Cooper album, and more of a Desmond Child and Friends thing! Child had previously written and/or produced songs by bands including Kiss, Bon Jovi and Aerosmith, and 'Trash' sounds like these bands. In fact, pretty much every song on the album could have been recorded as a follow up to 'Slippery When Wet'. He also brought in a number of 'special guests' to appear on the record

Alice Cooper - vocals
John McCurry - Guitar
Hugh McDonald - Bass
Bobby Chouinard - Drums
Alan St. John - Keyboards

Producer - Desmond Child

The working title for the album was 'Low Class Reunion'

The opening cut shouldn't need any introduction.'Poison' is Alice's biggest hit, reaching #2 in the UK charts. As an insult, it was kept from the top spot by the Jive Bunny song 'Swing The Mood'. If you are too young to remember this tune, it sounds like this

'Poison' is unrelentingly catchy, and sounds unlike anything that Alice had previously recorded. The main riff of it originally turned up in a John Waite song called 'Encircled' which was also co-written by guitarist John McCurry.

There are three version of the official video, which feature the female character (Rana Kennedy) in various states of undress. The inspiration for the video came from the film 'Hellraiser', with Alice in the 'chamber of chains'

01/10 - Posion (Cooper, Child, McCurry)

"Your cruel device
Your blood, like ice
One look could kill
My pain, your thrill

I wanna love you but I better not touch (Don't touch)
I wanna hold you but my senses tell me to stop
I wanna kiss you but I want it too much (Too much)
I wanna taste you but your lips are venomous poison
You're poison running through my veins
You're poison
I don't want to break these chains

Your mouth, so hot
Your web, I'm caught
Your skin, so wet
Black lace on sweat

I hear you calling and it's needles and pins (And pins)
I wanna hurt you just to hear you screaming my name
Don't wanna touch you but you're under my skin (Deep in)
I wanna kiss you but your lips are venomous poison
You're poison running through my veins
You're poison
I don't wanna break these chains
Poison

One look could kill
My pain, your thrill
I wanna love you but I better not touch (Don't touch)
I wanna hold you but my senses tell me to stop
I wanna kiss you but I want it too much (Too much)
I wanna taste you but your lips are venomous poison
You're poison running through my veins
You're poison, I don't wanna break these chains
Poison

I wanna love you but I better not touch (Don't touch)
I wanna hold you but my senses tell me to stop
I wanna kiss you but I want it too much (Too much)
I wanna taste you but your lips are venomous poison, yeah
I don't wanna break these chains
Poison, oh no
Runnin' deep inside my veins,
Burnin' deep inside my veins
It's poisoning
I don't wanna break these chains
Poison
I don't wanna break these chains
(fade)"

After such a strong opening song, 'Spark In The Dark', is disappointing. It is unmemorable and dumb

Guitarist Guy Mann-Dude is featured on the track

02/10 - Spark In The Dark (Cooper, Child)

"Oh, welcome to the party
It's only me and you
Tell the world to go away, babe
And I'll tell you what to do
Come over here and kiss me
I want to pull your hair
Turn out the lights and hold me
I want to touch you everywhere

We don't need nobody, baby
We don't need champagne
I'll take you to the deepest, darkest, hottest, lovers' lane

For a little spark in the dark
Just a little spark in the dark
Don't matter where we sleep
Don't matter where we park
All we need is a spark, spark
Spark in the dark
Just a little spark in the dark

Oh, come around midnight
We'll be crawlin' on the floor
Burnin' with the fever
And yellin' out for more
But don't you write it in your diary, baby
Don't blab it on the phone
'Cause if your mom and dad find out
They'll skin me to the bone

Now we don't need instructions, baby
Don't you be afraid
It takes a little friction, ah ha
That's how our love is made

From a little spark in the dark
Just a little spark in the dark
Don't matter what you say
No matter what you do
As long as it is me and you
We got a spark in the dark
Just a little spark in the dark
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah

We don't need nobody, baby
We don't need cocaine
I'll take you to the deepest, darkest, hottest lovers' lane

Spark in the dark
Just a little spark in the dark
Don't matter where we sleep
Don't matter where we park
All we need is a spark, spark
Spark in the dark
Spark in the dark
Just a little spark in the dark
No matter what we say, no matter what we do
As long as it is me and you
We`ve got a spark in the dark
Just a little spark in the dark
Oh, Well, you got your reputation baby, I got mine
And there`s every indication you`re the dangerous kind
You wear the black leather dress and it`s toasin` tight
Sparks are gonna fly when I turn out the light
I need a spark in the dark
Just a little spark in the dark
A little tiny spark in the dark
Ah, come on honey
Light me up
Just rub these two things....
(fade)"

Although you say Trash is an album anyone of Child's production bands could have recorded i actually disagree.

It's too sexual for Bon Jovi and too smutty for Aerosmith. Kiss possibly. Paul Stanley who sang Take it Off on Revenge wouldn't have had a problem with songs like Bed of Nails.

As for Poison. To me that's Alice through and through. It's perfect for his voice. Have you ever heard covers of it? They sound terrible. Tarja Turunan who i consider one of the best rock singers ever failed miserably with it for example.

The third song on the album was also released as a single, although it only reached #65 in the UK charts. 'House Of Fire' is a good pop-metal song, that has a catchy chorus.

Interestingly, it was covered by Bon Jovi, who, although never officially released, included the demo on the two disc special edition version of 'New Jersey'. The Jovi take on the song can be found here

Alice Cooper - Vocals
John McCurry - Guitar
Hugh McDonald - Bass
Bobby Chouinard - Drums
Alan St. John - Keyboards

Joe Perry from Aerosmith also plays guitar on the song

It was co-written by Joan Jett, who was the original guitarist with the band The Runaways, and is probably best known for her cover of 'I Love Rock And Roll' in 1981

03/10 - House Of Fire (Cooper, Jett, Child)

"House of fire
House of fire, yeah
Let's build a house of fire, baby
Not one of wood or stone
Walk through my door of desire, baby
Come on in and make it your home
Don't need a window to watch you, baby
Don't need no roof overhead
Don't need no key to unlock ya, baby
I'll use my lovin' instead
I won't tire
Take me higher

Building a house of fire, baby
Buildin' it with our love
We are buildin' a house of fire every time we touch
House of fire
House of fire

We ain't gotta pay rent now, baby
No landlord to throw us out
I want to play in your garden, baby
When you wanna give me a shout
I won't tire
Take me higher

Building a house of fire, baby
Buildin' it with our love
We are buildin' a house of fire every time we touch
We are building this house together, baby
Standing on solid ground
We are building a house of fire that you can't tear down

Brick by brick the flames get higher
Build it strong with our desire

Building a house of fire, baby
Building it with our love
We are building a house of fire every time we touch
Baby we are..
We are building this house together, baby
Standing on solid ground
We are building a house of fire that you can't tear down
Building a house of fire, baby
Building it with our love
We are building a house of fire every time we touch
We are building this house together baby
Staning on solid ground
we are building a house of fire that you can`t burn down

The following song, 'Why Trust You', is a standard rock song from the era

Alice Cooper - Vocals
John McCurry - Guitar
Hugh McDonald - Bass
Bobby Chouinard - Drums
Alan St. John - Keyboards

Guitarist Guy Mann-Dude is also featured on the track

04/10 - Why Trust You (Cooper, Child)

"Aw....
You come on strong with a great big smile
But your teeth are as sharp as a crocodile
You promised me the moon and the stars and the sun
But you never did nothin' for anyone
Can't look me in the face or straight in the eye
I'd buy the movie rights to your alibi
I wonder how low you will go
I wonder how high your head will blow
You're a psychopathic liar
Your soul is on fire
You're bluffin' with nuthin' while the stakes are gettin' higher

Why trust you
You never made a dream come true
Why trust you
Give me one good reason, one good reason why

Well, you come to me all teary-eyed
With your big tall tale way up in the sky
Begging on your knees for another chance
But everybody knows that's a song and a dance
Yeah, there used to be a time when you were the best
You had the fastest tongue in the west
Ya gave a look and a line like nobody else
You'd try to sell the Bible to the Devil himself
You sadistic little liar
You're walkin' on the wire
You're bluffin' up with nothin'
And the bills are gettin' higher

Why trust you
You never made a dream come true
Why trust you
Give me one good reason, one good reason
Why trust you

The noose is getting tighter
Your face is turning whiter
You can stuff it up your muffin and go stick it in the fire

(Why trust you)
Why trust you
(You never made a dream come true )
You never never never made a dream.. come true
(Why trust you, give me one good reason, one good reason)
You stinkin' little liar baby you could set your pants on fire
(Why trust you, you never made a dream come true )
Why trust you.... You better spit out what you mean...
(Why trust you, give me one good reason, one good reason )
Come clean.... You`re acting like an adict with a fully loaded automatic
Why trust you (why trust you)
I`m through (Why trust you)
I`m gone (Why trust you)
Into the next song (Why trust you)
Why trust you?"

The bass player on the Trash album is Bon Jovi's Hugh Mcdonald. Although back then he was probably just one of Desmond Child's 'go to session players'.
