July 14th, 1968 - The infamous Frank Zappa audition According to legend, after playing an unsuccessful gig at the Cheetah Club in California, which resulted in the band emptying the venue after playing for just ten minutes, they were approached and enlisted by music manager Shep Gordon who saw the band's negative impact that night as a force that could be turned in a more productive direction. Shep arranged for the band to meet and play for Zappa, who was looking to sign 'bizarre music acts' to his new record label, Straight Records. For this audition Zappa told them to come to his house "at 7 o'clock", and the band assumed he meant 7 o'clock in the morning! Being woken up by a band willing to play their particular brand of psychedelic rock at seven in the morning impressed Zappa enough to sign them to a three-album deal. Reportedly, he just shook his head and said: "OK. I'll sign you! I'll sign you! Just stop playing!" The incident is recounted by Zappa's PA Pauline Butcher in her book 'Freak Out, My Life With Frank Zappa: "'At seven o’clock the next morning Christine shook my blanket to rouse me. ‘Should I go wake Frank do you think?’ Alice Cooper, who looked like an upside down mop, peered down at me too. ‘What now, are you mad?’ ‘He told Alice to come at seven.’ ‘Tonight! Right now he's sleeping. You’ll have to wait.’" Photo by Zappa's friend Cal Schenkel of the band waiting for Frank to appear |

Probably not much use to 99.99% of people on the forum, but The Arizona State Lottery have announced that there are three new Alice Cooper scratch cards to be released on August 7th. Each $5 card give you a chance to win up to $50,000, but even if you lose you can enter your card into a draw for a chance to win VIP Chirstmas Pudding tickets or other Cooper merchandise Alice says: "I used to think you had made it if a) you’re a joke from Bob Hope on the Christmas Special; b) if you were an answer on 'Jeopardy; c) or if your head was on a Pez dispenser, because Pez dispensers put you up there with Captain Hook and Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Now I can add being on a Lotto ticket to that list" |
