Independent music

From Joy Division to Pulp, from The Killers to The Arctic Monkeys, are you a Pixie fan or are you mad for it like Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses.

Although most bands nowadays are on major labels, but its the music that counts.

Independent music (often shortened to indie music or indie) is music produced independently from major commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. The term indie is sometimes also used to describe a genre (such as indie rock and indie pop); as a genre term, "indie" may include music that is not independently produced, and most independent music artists do not fall into a single, defined musical style or genre, and usually create music that can be categorized into other genres.

It's hard to put your finger on what Indie is these days, because as you say most labels are owned by the majors now anyway. I was never into Madchester and all the casual/baggies and I couldn't have cared less about Blur Vs Oasis but I was into 7" Singles and tapes and going to gigs of bands I'd barely heard of before and watch them develop into something much bigger.

I had a big thing for the 4AD record label as well

And this was what I was doing back in 1996... I was obsessed by this band.

I would have really enjoyed that! Was that when Garbage were still playing theatre sized venues because I think Bis would have been totally lost on an arena stage.

Sonet
A Scandinavian label, founded in the mid-1950's. In addition to Scandinavia, the label had a local branch in the UK. The label was acquired by PolyGram in the early 1990's, and when Seagram bought PolyGram and merged it with MCA family of labels to form Universal Music Group, Sonet became the property of Universal.

A quick Q for the Inspector.

Do you know of any Indie compilations that you can recommend featuring the best - singles - of the late 80's / 90's bands - Soup Dragons, Primal Scream, James, Saint Etienne - that sort of thing?

There is certainly plenty of 80's Indie comp, best being by Ministry Of Sound, plus some of the cheaper Tesco ones, but very little that includes the early 90's as far as I can see,but ill keep an EYE open for one.

Just come in from the summer house where i was drinking JD on the rocks and American beer by candlelight whilst listening to Primal Scream's utterly brilliant Screamadelica.
