I do like Hardwired.... It's a return to form in my opinion.

Yes, again I agree that a lot of metal albums are not immediate, but nowadays I tend to be more interested in the feeling/mood/attitude of the record. I don't know if you understand it what I mean, and I might sound like an old fuddy-duddy, but I'm more interested in the beat of a record rather than what the band sound like or what they are singing about. If I'm in the mood for something with the pace and aggression of 'Reign In Blood' era Slayer, I am not going to want to listen to 'Vivid' by Living Colour!

So much of their material since makes the old stuff feel so generic. Songs like Running Free have become quite boring. Just to clarify though it's the songs where the chorus is just the song title repeated ad-nauseum that i've gone off. They still do this to some extent but the songs are so much better arranged nowadays. They still play too much new stuff live and the songs are far too long though. Fave Maiden album - 7th Son of a 7th Son. |

I think I've said this before many times, but 7th Son was the first album I heard (still have the cassette my cousin gave me in 1989) and has been my favourite ever since, not a bad track on there and it's their only album that I'll listen to without skipping a song. I agree though, the songwriting has improved since their return, but there seems to be a lot of filler in the reunion albums, although nothing along the same lines as Gangland, Quest for Fire, Flash of the Blade etc from the so called "Golden Era" of the 80's

Two of my favourite songs are 'The Phantom Of The Opera' and 'The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner'. Both are long, but they are also very complex and filled with musical passages that are almost 'progressive rock' in feeling
