May 8th, 1974 - The first of three days filming of the 'Pinball Wizard' sequence with Elton John for the film 'Tommy' at the Kings Theatre in Southsea.

The extras for the sequence are students recruited from Portsmouth Polytechnic. While smashing his guitar for the cameras, Pete accidentally brains one of the female students, sending her to hospital. He later gives her the guitar!

The band would return to the city a few weeks later on May 22 when they would play a special 'thank you' concert at the Guildhall in Portsmouth for the student extras

May 17, 1969 - The 'Tommy' album is released in the US. Fans in the UK had to wait until May 23rd before it was released over here!

Melody Maker picks it as 'Pop LP of the Month', and Record Mirror calls it "one of the most incredible feats ever accomplished in music." However, Richard Green in New Musical Express pans the record: "Pretentious is too strong a word; maybe over-ambitious is the right term, but sick certainly does apply."

The first single from the album, 'Pinball Wizard', was released in March 1969. BBC disc jockey Tony Blackburn attacks the song as "distasteful" and declares, "There is no excuse for the lyric". April 24th saw the band appearing on 'Top Of The Pops'. Unfortunately, Tony Blackburn was the DJ host for the show. Keith answers his criticism by hurling drumsticks at his head!

Sadly no footage of this exists any more

There's a six page feature on Pete Townshend and the making of his Empty Glass album in the latest issue of Classic Rock.

June 2nd, 1965 - Les 'Oo play their first shows outside the United Kingdom when they appear in concert at Le Club au Golf Drouot in Paris, France

The backdrop behind the band reads 'Welcome To The Who'...

...and the set list consisted of:
Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere
Good Lovin'
Please, Please, Please
Leaving Here
I can't Explain

Apparently beer crates were used to raise the stage, resulting in a very low ceiling!

'Beck's Bolero', recorded in 1966, featuring Jeff Beck (lead guitars), Jimmy Page (rhythm guitar), Keith (drums) and Nicky Hopkins (piano)

John was supposed to be the featured bass player, but didn't show up at the session, so John Paul Jones from Zeppelin filled in

Now you've had six months or so to digest it, what do you think of the latest album, Susan?
