The Royal Mint

"Our Music Legends collection showcases iconic acts from the nation’s diverse musical past and present. It’s not often that a band will span generations, but The Who, with their explosive performances, have been a part of Britain’s soundtrack for more than 50 years. Together, groundbreaking lead guitarist Pete Townshend, microphone-twirling Roger Daltrey, John ‘The Ox’ Entwistle, and maverick drummer Keith Moon challenged genres, broke records and thrilled fans with their unique style.

Artist Henry Gray has included some of the most iconic symbols from the band’s live and loud performances in his design. A Union flag, mod logo and speaker-smashing Rickenbacker guitar all feature in the form of a pinball table, which is a nod to Tommy, one of the band’s most famous creations."

The four drums that were not destroyed by Keith's explosion during the bands appearance on 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour' television show in 1967

The drums, along with Roger's stage suit, are on display in the Artist Gallery Woodstock exhibit at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona

August 18th, 1978 - 43 years ago today, the 'Who Are You' album is released. This was to be final album recorded by the original band line-up - three weeks after it's release, Keith Moon was dead

Ironically, the album cover featured Mooney sitting on a chair containing the words 'Not To Be Taken Away'. Photographer Terry O'Neil had insisted he sat with the back of the chair facing the camera so as to hide his distended stomach, a result of his alcoholism

It was the first album that featured a track that wasn't recorded by all four members of the band. Keith struggled with the complex 6/8 time signature on the song 'Music Must Change', so his drums were removed completely from the track, and replaced with the sound of footsteps and a few cymbal crashes

Roger solo 2021 tour dates

"“Throughout my life I have sung with so many great musicians, from the heavy rock of The Who and Wilko Jonson, to the Irish lilt of The Chieftains. On this tour I want to take the audience on a musical journey through my career as a singer, with a show of songs and sounds that explores and surprises. I look forward to having closer contact with my audience than festivals and arenas allow. Leaving time to chat.”

“It’s important to get our road crew working again, without these guys the halls would go silent. It’s also clear that live music is an important part of all our lives, something to free us from the groundhog days that life has become. This pandemic has brought home to me what an important part of me singing is and it’s made me determined to get back onstage asap. See you soon!”"
