With most band's i prefer early recordings when the band's were trying to make a name for themselves, they seem to put so much more effort in when they are trying to get recognition.
I can't believe you talk about early recordings then give examples of REM that are five albums + into their career. Especially when it's recognised the world over that the best and most creative REM period was from Out of Time to New Adventures in Hi-Fi. 91-96.
Their last two albums Accelerate and Collapse into Now are among their very best. I was gutted when they called it a day.
Unless of course you are like Suzi and haven't bought an album since 1985.
