At the 1996 MTV Europe Awards broadcast on tv Metallica were scheduled to play their single King Nothing. However MTV refused them any pyro for the song and also instructed them not to swear at all. So at the last minute the band played a ridiculously fast and very sweary couple of punk songs in Last Caress (Misfits)and So What! (Anti-Nowhere League) The performance has never been subsequently broadcast and Metallica were banned from MTV for years. That reminds me of Nirvana at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1992 when they wanted to play Rape Me but were told they couldn't under any circumstances. Although they didn't play the song, it didn't stop Kurt Cobain from having a bit of fun with the audience and MTV execs!
