Gillan is a strange one for me. Despite loving Purple (old and new) i've barely heard a Gillan solo song. In fact i couldn't name one if my life depended on it.

It was the 'Magic' tour that I saw them on - October 24th, Portsmouth Guildhall. Support came from a forgotten band called 'Spider', who I really liked. They were very much a Status Quo 12 bar boogie band, who released three albums - 'Rock 'N Roll Gypsies', 'Rough Justice' and 'Raise The Banner'

Sadly, on the night I saw them Ian Gillan was suffering with laryngitis, so their set was truncated by about 20 minutes, meaning I didn't get to see them play 'Smoke On The Water'. This was referenced by Ian when Deep Purple played Portsmouth in 1996!

Yeah. Oh man. Look at the line of fans going right around the Brixton Academy back to the entrance. Glad I got there early. I left my phone in the hotel but of course if I had taken it I would have had 02 priority entrance.

I was near the front anyway but still..
