Yay! I saw Gillan in 1981 on the Double Trouble Tour. Guildford Civic Hall.

Thought it looked like him.

Gillan is a strange one for me. Despite loving Purple (old and new) i've barely heard a Gillan solo song. In fact i couldn't name one if my life depended on it.

It was the 'Magic' tour that I saw them on - October 24th, Portsmouth Guildhall. Support came from a forgotten band called 'Spider', who I really liked. They were very much a Status Quo 12 bar boogie band, who released three albums - 'Rock 'N Roll Gypsies', 'Rough Justice' and 'Raise The Banner'

Sadly, on the night I saw them Ian Gillan was suffering with laryngitis, so their set was truncated by about 20 minutes, meaning I didn't get to see them play 'Smoke On The Water'. This was referenced by Ian when Deep Purple played Portsmouth in 1996!

The line-up when I saw them was: Ian Gillan (Vocals), Janick Gers (Guitar), Colin Towns (Keyboards [later to be music composer for Rawhead Rex (1986), Bellman and True (1987), Vampire's Kiss (1989), The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (1989), Hands of a Murderer (1990), The Puppet Masters (1994), Captives Space Truckers (1996) and Guest House Paradiso (1999) amongst others], John McCoy (Bass), Mick Underwood (Drums)

You would know them if you heard them: 'Mutually Assured Destruction', 'New Orleans', 'No Laughing In Heaven', 'Nightmare', 'Long Gone' and their cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Livin' For The City'

Yeah. Oh man. Look at the line of fans going right around the Brixton Academy back to the entrance. Glad I got there early. I left my phone in the hotel but of course if I had taken it I would have had 02 priority entrance.
I was near the front anyway but still..
