Psycheheads Unite

Okay, the Metalheads are uniting. I think it is in the best interests of this forum that we PsycheHeads unite also. Those of you who love Psych Rock, psychedelia and Prog Rock....you know who you are.

We Psycheheads have a stronger tolerance to long monotous musical passages. Beat that, 3 minute heroes!

mr 420 26th May 2011 10:24 AM

I adore Prog Rock! Funnily enough when I was younger I thought it was just a bunch of hippies who couldn't finish a song, but when I actually listened to the music, well my opinion changed forever.

Two of my favourite Prog tunes:

Genesis - Watcher Of The Skies.

Gentle Giant - Knots And Octopus Features (Live) *Simply jaw-dropping footage!*

I'm a big fan of King Crimson having been brain washed by my dad into liking them throughout my childhood along with Captain Beefheart.

I do like a lot of psychedelia and I'm presently revisiting the more folky end of it with Incredible String Band and newer bands like The Owl Service.

platostotal 29th May 2011 12:22 AM

As I said on another thread, Ambient stuff is hard to beat when in the mood for it. Tangerine Dream, early Pink Floyd etc, But my current fave is the'Vesper' version of 'Blade runner' soundtrack. So... lights out, volume up and drift away. Kraftwerk 'Autobahn' a good place to start.:smokin:

Wish I could link to some mp3s, but as we know not allowed. Although links to YouTube seem to be OK. So I'll give it a try(I'll edit in when I find something)

King Crimson are peerless. Robert Fripp is a true guitar genius.

Autobahn is a great album, probably my favourite by Kraftwerk, with Trans Europe Express a close second.

King Crimson are superb, Fripp is one of the finest guitarists I've heard, complex riffs, use of effects....brilliant. In the Court of the Crimson King and Red are my top 2 by them.

Foxtrot is a fantastic album, but I've always preferred the earlier Nursery Cryme. Trespass is a wondereful album too - and unique in that it doesn't feature Phil Collins on this, their debut album.

Funnily enough, I never rated Collins until I heard his playing in the early Genesis albums and now I consider him a drumming god!

The only prog band i really like is Marillion.

Its just not a genre i have bothered to explore, although i do have a few albums by Porcupine Tree and Dream Theatre.

I like the heavier prog music of Opeth and Mastodon.

Funnily enough, I had the good fortune to meet the one and only Fish a number of years back after a Celtic/Hibs game. He was a cracking bloke with a good sense of humour. Do you know what he's upto these days?

Fish is still recording and touring. He's playing some of the smaller festivals this summer.

He has several Scottish dates in August.

mr 420 6th June 2011 05:04 PM

Cheers! I will have a look to see if he is playing any of the ones that are close to me this summer.

Lets also mention Mike Oldfield, for 'Tubular bells' alone. If you were around at the time it was a true WOW wtf is that moment. Funny how a peaceful piece of music can be so scary when used by a filmaker.

Gojirosan 11th June 2011 12:56 PM

I dislike most (but not all) Prog, but I love psychedelic music and I am a huge fan of Krautrock/Kosmiche Musik, so I thought I'd help bump up the numbers in the battle against Metal!

Daemonia 29th March 2012 11:04 AM

This thread seems to have become sadly neglected and the metalheads thread is getting far too much attention.

So it's time for a reboot and I shall introduce you good folks to some of the greatest prog/psychedelic tunes of all time...

Psychic Ills were a recommendation as well!! Basically, i hate prog (except VDGG) and felt the thread was getting bogged down in interminably dull solo land

Now, you see, I love prog rock. Probably my fave musical genre after space rock (or acid rock as it used to be known before political correctness prevailed - and prog rock actually used be called pomp rock, IIRC).

But I take in everything from the grungy rawness of 13th Floor Elevators right through to the epic monsters from ELP and early Genesis. It's all good to my ears. :)

Wasn't the genesis of "the Wall" Waters' reaction to a fan at a gig??

Apparently so

From wikipedia:

"Pink Floyd's In the Flesh Tour, promoting the album 'Animals' was the first one where they played in large stadiums, and in July 1977 – on the final date at the Montreal Olympic Stadium – a small group of noisy and excited fans near the stage irritated Waters to such an extent that he spat at one of them. He was not the only band member who felt disaffected at the show, as guitarist David Gilmour refused to perform the band's usual encores ("Money" and "Us and Them"), leaving the rest of the band, with backup guitarist Snowy White, to improvise a slow, sad twelve-bar blues, which Waters described as "some music to go home to". Later that night, while returning from hospital to treat an injury sustained to his foot while play-fighting backstage with manager Steve O'Rourke, Waters spoke with music producer Bob Ezrin, and a friend of Ezrin's, a psychiatrist sharing their car, about the feelings of alienation he was experiencing on the tour. He articulated his desire to isolate himself by constructing a wall across the stage between the performers and the audience. He later said, "I loathed playing in stadiums ... I kept saying to people on that tour, 'I'm not really enjoying this ... there is something very wrong with this.'" While Gilmour and Wright were in France recording solo albums, and Nick Mason was busy producing Steve Hillage's Green, Waters began to write new material. The spitting incident became the starting point for a new concept, which explored the protagonist's self-imposed isolation after years of traumatic interactions with authority figures and the loss of his father as a young child. To execute The Wall concept was to attempt to analyse the performer's psychological separation from the audience, using a physical structure as a metaphorical and theatrical device"
