Latest Album Bought

Picked up the debut album from KXM the other day.

KXM are a power trio consisting of Doug Pinnick (Kings X) on bass and vocals, George Lynch (Dokken) on guitar and Korn drummer Ray Luzier.

Love it. It's rocky, catchy but also earthy and has a lot of hidden depth to it.

I've not picked it up yet because I'm still at work but come 5pm I'll be bagging Mogwai's new album, Every Country's Sun.



I've already had a listen to it this morning and it's another epic slab of Post-Rock. I can't believe I've been following this band for 22 years now!
They're getting more and more prolific these days and are not only releasing albums like this but scoring films and TV too, most recently with Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross on the Before the Flood documentary (also highly recommended)

To fill in some of the gaps in my musical knowledge, a visit to the charity shop resulted in a copy of the Iron Maiden compilation 'From Fear To Eternity: The Best Of 1990 - 2010' (£1:99) as a companion piece to 'The Best Of The Beast' double CD set (which I already own)



It's disappointing to notice that the songs taken from the albums 'The X Factor' ('Man On The Edge' and 'Sign Of The Cross') and 'Virtual XI' ('The Clansman') only feature live versions with Bruce, instead of the studio versions with Blaze

I have noticed that they did the same with the previous Greatest Hits release, 'Somewhere Back In Time', where the songs from the first two albums featuring Paul are again represented with live versions featuring Bruce

It's as if the band are trying to erase parts of their past!

At least my copy of 'The Best Of The Beast' features Paul and Blaze on their respective songs

I prefer Bruce singing the Blaze songs, but not the Paul songs

I agree, The Clansman off that compilation album is one of my favourite Maiden songs ever! Although I will say that I don't think Bruce can do Man on the Edge as well as Blaze.

Looking back i feel sorry for Blaze Bayley. He actually did a decent job and raised the level of some fairly turgid material especially on The X Factor.

Maiden were in decline, Steve Harris was self producing and they'd been going downhill fairly rapidly since Seventh Son. Plus it was extremely difficult to replace Bruce Dickinson and his monstrous ego that had threatened to destroy the band prior to him leaving.

There are enough very good songs between the two Bayley albums to have come up with a cracking single album. The same can be said of Dickinson's last two Maiden releases.

All was well when Bruce returned though with Maiden's best album since Seventh Son and the best since he returned as well.

I've said it before, I don't mind the two Blaze albums, but he couldn't cut it live when singing the classics, they did shit on him before Bruce came back though which was unnecessary, hence the use of live versions of his songs on the compilations

The Motorhead covers album is good!

I was going to buy the Arch Enemy one today but I listened to it on stream coming come from work, and while the first half is really good the remainder was very forgettable. I'm going to give it a miss.

I have four of the songs on the covers album already but 7 are new to me, including the fantastic rendition of Heroes.

There's perhaps an even more poignant track though. A cover of Rainbow's Starstruck with Biff Byford singing because Lemmy was to ill to perform anything other than a few backing vocals.

Pity about the Arch Enemy album.
